Donate Non-Perishables
Everyone knows about donating their old clothes to thrift stores, however,
a good community service idea would be to stop by the store for
non-perishables and donate them to your local food bank.
Share old toys with suffering
children.
Pack up your stuffed animals and lightly played with soft toys, and bring
them to children in hospitals. The key here is making sure they are clean
and in good shape.
Share the holiday spirit.
Visit your post office to get a letter from a child. Write a response,
purchase a gift, and mail your package to bring some holiday cheer to
him or her.
Send a care package.
Deployed troops, veterans, and wounded soldiers will sure appreciate it.
Write a thank-you note and include some food (make sure to abide by
rules for food), and if you are still a minor, only sign your first name. A
great website for learning what to donate and where to send it is
Operation Gratitude.
Volunteer at Your Pace
If you are struggling to find something to get involved in because of your
busy lifestyle, DoSomething.org is for you! Choose a cause, specify how
much time you have, and decide on the service you would like to provide.
There are so many diverse options, and this is especially geared toward
students!
Help the elderly
If you know of an elderly person who could probably use some help, offer!
You could rake leaves, shovel the driveway, do housework, mow the
lawn, run some errands, etc.
Donate reading materials.
You can donate books and magazines to shelters, libraries, and schools!
Just make sure they are in good condition.
Volunteer your skills!
Are you good with computers? Volunteer to fix computers or teach skills
at libraries, shelters, to an elderly friend, friends and family, etc. Or
maybe you are great at a certain subject in school. You can volunteer
tutoring services! Coach a sport you’re passionate about. Donate
homemade quilts or items that you enjoy sewing. Bake food to donate or
hold a bake sale and give the money to a charity. Whatever your skills or
passions are, try to think of a way you can use them for the community.
Run or Walk an Event.
There are several events that ask for people to walk or run to raise
money for research. For example, March of Dimes and Relay for Life.
Help Behind-the-Scenes
Events always need volunteers for registrations, handing out water
bottles, cleaning up afterwards, or any other miscellaneous tasks that are
ALWAYS needed.
Help a Natural Resource
Consider volunteering to clean up our natural resources. Perhaps a
beach, park, riverbed, etc….
Martin Luther King Jr. Day
Consider the several volunteer
opportunities available on the National Day
of Service. These opportunities don’t
typically exist during the rest of the year,
such as: Meals on Wheels (kitchen help
and drivers needed), canned food
collections especially for MLK day,
volunteering at festivals, and usually some
kind of forest or shores restorations project.
Dance Marathon
If you are a dancer, look into trying a 24-hour dance marathon to raise
funds!
Animal Shelters
If you love animals, perhaps volunteering at an animal shelter would be a
great fit for you! Tasks as a volunteer usually involve dog walking, cat
socializing, cleaning cages, help with feeding, adoption counseling, or
other administrative tasks.
Libraries
You could also volunteer at the library! Oftentimes they will have you
shelve books, DVDs, and CDs; organize magazines and newspapers;
assist with upkeep/order of the shelves; help retrieve items for Interlibrary
Loans; check in books; mend and clean books; answer phones; shelf
reading; cover paperbacks; etc.
