 Above figure presents unit shipments plus the year-on-year percentage growth forecast for the HDD
industry for the period of 2000 through 2008.
 First quarter of 2008, HDD vendors shipped 137 million units, up 21% on a year-on-basis.
 Bulk of the drives going to five segments: mobile computers, desktop PCs, consumer electronics,
external drives and enterprise applications, i.e. both SATA & SAS drives.
 From 2003 to 2008, HDD industry shipments grew at an astounding CAGR of 17.2%.
 HDD industry soon faced a new challenge: highly price-competitive NAND flash memory, which vied
with HDDs for design wins in the consumer-electronics field
Hard Drive India

 The external hard disk (HDD) market, though relatively small at Rs 33 crore, saw traction especially in
two areas. One was among the SMBs and the SOHOs, businesses that generated lot of digital contents
in terms of emails and office documents leading to an exponential growth for storage requirement.
 However, compared to the demand for storage, prices of HDDs dropped drastically. While this made it
more affordable for small businesses, it also ensured that the market did not grow as expected in
  absolute terms.
 Vendors like Seagate, Samsung, Transcend, iOmega, Western Digital, and Hitachi dominated the
show, but there was a substantial gray market many times over the size of the organized trade. Not
surprising considering that even a 160 Gb HDD was available for around Rs 2,500 making the per Gb
storage cost lower than even pen drives.
 Notwithstanding the growth of the external HDD market, the market for internal hard disks in PCs and
laptops did not slow down. DQ does not separately estimate this market, as it is already counted in the
  desktop and laptop segments.
 At Rs 1,143 crore, Seagate is the runaway leader, and Western Digital, were the major HDD players in
  the market.
 Most vendors created a separate portfolio for products targeting both large enterprises and SMB. The
launch of HDDs with a maximum storage capacity of 1 Tb was another milestone for the market. With
an exponential increase in laptops, most vendors realized that was where the action would be more in
  the coming years.
Hard Drive Global
Major factors which will drive HDD industry capital spending from 2007 through 2013:
 Annual drive volumes increasing over 100% from 2007 (501 million) through 2013 (1.1 billion)
 Form factors ratio changes: 2.5-inch and smaller HDDs will dominate by 2010
 HDD and component companies have cash to invest in equipment due to higher drive demand and
  more stable drive prices
 New HDD applications require new manufacturing capital equipment and process changes
 Initial transition to discrete track media by next year, followed by patterned media development starting
in 2010 and heat assisted magnetic recording introduction within the following two years, requiring new
types of capital equipment and changes in manufacturing processes
 Lower flying heights and changes in surface characteristics of heads and disks increasing metrology
requirements and leading to new measurement technologies as well as tightening of head and disk
  specifications
 Between 2007 and 2013, with about $313 billion of HDD company total accumulated revenue, the
industry is expected to spend about $27 billion or about 9 percent of total revenue over that period on
  capital equipment.
 Capital spending per drive has varied considerably for the last few years with a local peak expected by
2012 of about $5.50 per drive as investments to implement discrete track media reach their expected
  peak.
 Total industry spending on capital equipment in 2007 was about $2.2 billion with 69 percent of this
spent on process equipment, 25 percent on production test and 6 percent on metrology.
 In that year, head, media and drive capital equipment spending was 35 percent, 46 percent and 19
  percent respectively.
Memory Card Global

 According to market research group Strategy Analytics
Shipments of phones equipped with removable memory card slots will grow at an average

592 million slotted phones were shipped worldwide in 2007, representing 53% of all

Nearly 57% of these used the microSD (including microSDHC) slot format, which has now

The microSD format is expected to hit peak penetration of 86 percent in 2011
 The market research group suggests demand for high capacity cards to store music, images,
video and data will trigger significant growth in the high capacity microSDHC format this year
    and next.
 Strategy Analytics also expects strong growth in embedded memory over the next few years,
but notes the benefits of being able to upsize capacity and transfer data to a new phone makes
memory card slots an essential requirement for all mid-to-high end phones.
Memory Card India

 Increasing consumption of mobile phones and digital cameras led to substantial growth of the
    flash (or memory) cards segment.
 Mobile phone handset market last year was around 100 mn units, out of which at least 60%
handsets had memory card slots which created huge opportunity.
 Drop prices in digital cameras leading to the dig cam market witnessing a rapid growth also
supported the memory card boom greatly.
 The demand for 4 GB and 8 GB memory cards for mobile phones were particularly high.
 Time lag was a major problem for photographers using low capacity memory cards.
 Digital cameras with 8 megapixels were largely in demand which in turn fueled the growth of 8
    GB memory cards for cameras.
 Movement of smaller cards continued through the year with MicroSD and MiniSD formats
taking over a larger share of the market.
 This was applicable for all leading vendors like SanDisk, Kingston, Transcend, Moser Baer
    and Umax.
 However, there was a significant expansion in the memory card market in Q4 07, with a 24%
    increase over the previous quarter.
Memory Card India

Market Leaders
 SanDisk, the market leader in this category, further leveraged the advanced NAND flash
memory design worked out of its India Device Design Center to develop innovative flash
technologies for India’s increasingly digital-savvy population.
 Kingston has added 16 GB Class 4 SDHC flash memory card to its product line to give
consumers greater storage flexibility and faster speed.
 Sony was not among the top five vendors, its proprietary memory card standard, Memory Stick,
for its own-brand of Cybershot cameras and Sony Ericsson handsets ensured its foothold
among both mobile phones and dig cam segments.

The growth of the gray market was, however, a real concern for vendors. This bugbear for
vendors alone contributed about 70% of the overall organized market.

Gray market sales were dominated by all of SD, MicroSD and MiniSD cards. Usual strategies
like reducing prices and developing a proper distribution network were deployed to counter the
    gray threat.

Solar Equipment

 Europe dominates the global PV market, and Germany is the largest European PV market,
accounting for more than 90% PV market installed capacity within the continent in 2006.
 The dominance of silicon-based wafer is fading away and it is expected that in long term,
silicon supply situation will ease up.
 Declining cost of PV provides opportunities for the deployment of this technology mainly in
developing low cost economies such as India and China.
 Despite the high cost of PV modules, there has been considerable investment primarily in the
developed countries on R&D in the PV sector. Due to this, total cumulative installed PV
capacity reached 6634 MWp in the end of 2006.
 Global PV industry still has to achieve self-sufficiency. It is in its very nascent stage, which is
highly driven by government initiatives. Japanese PV industry seems to achieve self-sufficiency
where government initiatives are declining in PV.
 From future perspective, it is expected that countries such as China and India will dominate the
    global PV industry.

E - Homes

 Concept of digital home is no more a Ray Bradbury fiction-makers of computers, phones, and
consumer electronics will have to work on right packaging, value for money, ease of use,
portability, flexibility… as they unleash their killer applications.
 IDC estimates, SEC A, which is the potential target audience for digital home constitutes 2% of
the population, while it is only 7.1% of the urban population, which translates to five million
    homes in India.
 Positive indicator is the increasing number of working females (approximately 12%) in the
urban scenario. As the working women population grows in urban areas, a need to have a
comfortable lifestyle, and ‘get work’ done at home will play an important role in the adoption of
    the digital home concept.

Hard Drive Global Global H.D.D players Seagate Technology LLC Hitachi GST Western Digital Corp.  Above figure presents unit shipments plus the year-on-year percentage growth forecast for the HDD industry for the period of 2000 through 2008.  First quarter of 2008, HDD vendors shipped 137 million units, up 21% on a year-on-basis.  Bulk of the drives going to five segments: mobile computers, desktop PCs, consumer electronics, external drives and enterprise applications, i.e. both SATA & SAS drives.  From 2003 to 2008, HDD industry shipments grew at an astounding CAGR of 17.2%.  HDD industry soon faced a new challenge: highly price-competitive NAND flash memory, which vied with HDDs for design wins in the consumer-electronics field
  • 9.
Hard Drive India  The external hard disk (HDD) market, though relatively small at Rs 33 crore, saw traction especially in two areas. One was among the SMBs and the SOHOs, businesses that generated lot of digital contents in terms of emails and office documents leading to an exponential growth for storage requirement.  However, compared to the demand for storage, prices of HDDs dropped drastically. While this made it more affordable for small businesses, it also ensured that the market did not grow as expected in absolute terms.  Vendors like Seagate, Samsung, Transcend, iOmega, Western Digital, and Hitachi dominated the show, but there was a substantial gray market many times over the size of the organized trade. Not surprising considering that even a 160 Gb HDD was available for around Rs 2,500 making the per Gb storage cost lower than even pen drives.  Notwithstanding the growth of the external HDD market, the market for internal hard disks in PCs and laptops did not slow down. DQ does not separately estimate this market, as it is already counted in the desktop and laptop segments.  At Rs 1,143 crore, Seagate is the runaway leader, and Western Digital, were the major HDD players in the market.  Most vendors created a separate portfolio for products targeting both large enterprises and SMB. The launch of HDDs with a maximum storage capacity of 1 Tb was another milestone for the market. With an exponential increase in laptops, most vendors realized that was where the action would be more in the coming years.

Hard Drive Global Major factors which will drive HDD industry capital spending from 2007 through 2013:  Annual drive volumes increasing over 100% from 2007 (501 million) through 2013 (1.1 billion)  Form factors ratio changes: 2.5-inch and smaller HDDs will dominate by 2010  HDD and component companies have cash to invest in equipment due to higher drive demand and more stable drive prices  New HDD applications require new manufacturing capital equipment and process changes  Initial transition to discrete track media by next year, followed by patterned media development starting in 2010 and heat assisted magnetic recording introduction within the following two years, requiring new types of capital equipment and changes in manufacturing processes  Lower flying heights and changes in surface characteristics of heads and disks increasing metrology requirements and leading to new measurement technologies as well as tightening of head and disk specifications  Between 2007 and 2013, with about $313 billion of HDD company total accumulated revenue, the industry is expected to spend about $27 billion or about 9 percent of total revenue over that period on capital equipment.  Capital spending per drive has varied considerably for the last few years with a local peak expected by 2012 of about $5.50 per drive as investments to implement discrete track media reach their expected peak.  Total industry spending on capital equipment in 2007 was about $2.2 billion with 69 percent of this spent on process equipment, 25 percent on production test and 6 percent on metrology.  In that year, head, media and drive capital equipment spending was 35 percent, 46 percent and 19 percent respectively.

Memory Card Global  According to market research group Strategy Analytics Shipments of phones equipped with removable memory card slots will grow at an average 592 million slotted phones were shipped worldwide in 2007, representing 53% of all Nearly 57% of these used the microSD (including microSDHC) slot format, which has now The microSD format is expected to hit peak penetration of 86 percent in 2011  The market research group suggests demand for high capacity cards to store music, images, video and data will trigger significant growth in the high capacity microSDHC format this year and next.  Strategy Analytics also expects strong growth in embedded memory over the next few years, but notes the benefits of being able to upsize capacity and transfer data to a new phone makes memory card slots an essential requirement for all mid-to-high end phones.

Memory Card India  Increasing consumption of mobile phones and digital cameras led to substantial growth of the flash (or memory) cards segment.  Mobile phone handset market last year was around 100 mn units, out of which at least 60% handsets had memory card slots which created huge opportunity.  Drop prices in digital cameras leading to the dig cam market witnessing a rapid growth also supported the memory card boom greatly.  The demand for 4 GB and 8 GB memory cards for mobile phones were particularly high.  Time lag was a major problem for photographers using low capacity memory cards.  Digital cameras with 8 megapixels were largely in demand which in turn fueled the growth of 8 GB memory cards for cameras.  Movement of smaller cards continued through the year with MicroSD and MiniSD formats taking over a larger share of the market.  This was applicable for all leading vendors like SanDisk, Kingston, Transcend, Moser Baer and Umax.  However, there was a significant expansion in the memory card market in Q4 07, with a 24% increase over the previous quarter.
  • 13.
Memory Card India Market Leaders  SanDisk, the market leader in this category, further leveraged the advanced NAND flash memory design worked out of its India Device Design Center to develop innovative flash technologies for India’s increasingly digital-savvy population.  Kingston has added 16 GB Class 4 SDHC flash memory card to its product line to give consumers greater storage flexibility and faster speed.  Sony was not among the top five vendors, its proprietary memory card standard, Memory Stick, for its own-brand of Cybershot cameras and Sony Ericsson handsets ensured its foothold among both mobile phones and dig cam segments. The growth of the gray market was, however, a real concern for vendors. This bugbear for vendors alone contributed about 70% of the overall organized market. Gray market sales were dominated by all of SD, MicroSD and MiniSD cards. Usual strategies like reducing prices and developing a proper distribution network were deployed to counter the gray threat.

Solar Equipment  Europe dominates the global PV market, and Germany is the largest European PV market, accounting for more than 90% PV market installed capacity within the continent in 2006.  The dominance of silicon-based wafer is fading away and it is expected that in long term, silicon supply situation will ease up.  Declining cost of PV provides opportunities for the deployment of this technology mainly in developing low cost economies such as India and China.  Despite the high cost of PV modules, there has been considerable investment primarily in the developed countries on R&D in the PV sector. Due to this, total cumulative installed PV capacity reached 6634 MWp in the end of 2006.  Global PV industry still has to achieve self-sufficiency. It is in its very nascent stage, which is highly driven by government initiatives. Japanese PV industry seems to achieve self-sufficiency where government initiatives are declining in PV.  From future perspective, it is expected that countries such as China and India will dominate the global PV industry.
