What Is a Steam Engine? 
 Steam engine was first invented in the 1698 by an 
English inventor, Thomas Savery. In which later in the 
1711 it was improved by Thomas Newcomen he is 
also an Englishman. Then again, in 1781 a Scottish 
guy named James Watt improved the steam engine 
that produce continuous rotative motion in which 
later this engine became truly viable machinery that 
helped start the Industrial Revolution in the 18th 
century. 
 Steam engine is an engine where it uses heats (by 
boiling water) to build a high pressure force to 
produce a mechanical motion. 
 This was used for water pump and transportations.

Thomas Savery 
 Thomas Savery was born in 1650, Shilstone, 
Devinshire, England. And he was the first 
person who successfully invented the steam 
powered engine. 
 He was a military engineer and he was a 
mechanic lover. 
 His first design was pretty simple in which it is 
only can be used to pump water up of the 
mines. 
 Later on he decided to work together with 
Thomas Newcomon after he got a patent tu run 
this steam powered engine. Then they decided 
to improve the steam engine to become more 
advanced.

Thomas Newcomen 
 He was born in 28th February 1664 in Dartmouth 
Devon England. 
 He was a British Engineer and one of the steam 
engine developer. 
 His initiative to develop the steam engine is 
because as he was an ironmonger in his city and 
running a water pump engine using horses power 
to pump out the water from the Cornish tin 
mines was too expensive. 
 His new design was using piston instead of 
vessels from Savery. 
 Their innovation was really important in that time 
to help the coal miners pumping up the water.

James Watt 
 He was born in Greenock, Scotland 1736. 
 He raised in the carpenter family and he loves 
instruments. 
 Later in 1755 he went to London to study 
engineering. In which later he improved the 
Newcomen’s steam engine design and 
afterwards he met a guy named Matthew 
Boulton, in which then they become a partner 
and runs this business of steam engine together. 
 His steam engine was working successfully and 
even it can be used in transportation. Since 
then the steam train was build and ships etc. 
 It was really helping the Industrial revolution.

How Does It Work?

 Inside the locomotive cab, the coals are loaded in the firebox, 
 The boiler is a big tank of water with dozens of thin metal tubes running 
through it, in which it brings heat and smoke from the firebox to the 
chimney to release them. As the heat is released from that tube, the 
water in the tank is boiled. 
 The steam from the water goes to the cylinder and giving a pressure 
towards the piston right in front of the wheel. 
 A little mechanical gate in the cylinder, known as an inlet valve lets the 
steam in. The piston moves back and forth and as it is connected to the 
wheel using crank and connecting rod, it able to moves the wheels.
