How are those who are a from
the West Midlands portrayed in
                        films?!
Sightseers!

• Sightseers is a black British comedy thriller directed by
Ben Wheatley, a Studio Canel and Film Four Production.
This is a flesh creeping funny film about two holiday
makers Chris and Tina who go caravanning which takes
a sinister turn. Tina a character who plays a sheltered
timid girl who is very impressionable goes on holiday
with her partner Chris. This seems like a perfect holiday
for these two characters until it turns into a killing spree
where murder takes center stage. Audiences are left
wondering how this couple will end up and how many
  lives will be taken.
How are characters shown to be
           like in this film?

• Tina and Chris are both main characters that originate from the West
Midlands. “Show me your world Chris” shows that she is very hidden
character, has gained much cultural which could be representing that all
people from the West Midlands should be perceived this way. The fact
he takes to the museum shows how boring and dull personalities they
have, with little experiences of travelling. The plain dull personalities can
be reflected through the Mise en scene, dull boring clothing with little
imagination. Sightseers pronounces this idea that those from the West
Midlands come from very little intellectual abilities, very safe and
traditional way of living that doesn’t take them much further than the
corner shop. “I didn’t do that” just supports the childish attitude that
comes from those from the West Midlands she represents naivety and
little substance to her personality, where he almost represents violence
and deviance which may also be peoples labells on those from the West
    Midlands.
Why are people in the west Midlands perceived this way?

 • I believe that people in the West Midlands are perceived in this manner
because they aren’t seem to be in many big hard hitting movies. As they are
normally associated with low budget film making, which is films that tend to be
very realistic like Social Realism films. Knowing this, it maybe why directors
feel that those who come from the West Midlands are very boring and plain
and represented in an ordinary way. In the film sightseers it is very interesting
how the story ends up unfolding you notice that Chris the main character ends
up beating a man to death, this then follows into serial murders. This really
doesn’t appear to represent someone that has a boring lifestyle that
population are meant to be. This film could be one that you could say has a
self discovery element to it that they begin appearing really ordinary normal
people but by the end they are serial murders. Having this twist could say that
the director doesn’t want the idea that people from the West Midlands are
boring and barely cultured by making it humorous yet taking on a serious
issues just justifies that those from the West Midlands are perceived wrongly
in the media. The line “I don’t want this to ruin our holiday” does maintain the
lack of intelligence that does represent those of the West Midlands.
