How effective is the combination of your
main product and ancillary texts?
Evaluation Question 2
I decided I would use the same colour scheme throughout my
media products to create a visual link between my media texts.
The use of the same colours create a good synergy for my media
texts. This synergy will help the audience understand that these
media texts are all linked together and that they are for the same
product. The colour reflects the colours that can be seen in the
Yorkshire Dales therefore does it not only create a link between
all the media texts but also the region the magazine is for
meaning the audience will be able to link the texts that way too.
Another way I created a link between my magazine and ancillary
texts is by using the same fonts throughout. I did this so there is
another visual link between all the media texts helping the audience
create links between all the texts helping them know that the website
and billboard are for the magazine. My target audience, when I
conducted my audience research, said they wanted a simple look to
the magazine, billboard and website that is why I used the fonts I did
and used them throughout my media texts.
One way I created synergy with my magazine, billboard and website is by using images of the Yorkshire Dales throughout the
media texts. I did this to create a visual link between all the texts so the audience can obviously see the texts are all related to
each other. In my audience research my audience said one thing they enjoyed about the Yorkshire Dales is that the views and
scenery there; therefore I decided I would have images of scenery/views from the dales on each media text whether it be as a
background or to accompany the article. The faded image as a background for my contents page and billboard creates
synergy between these 2 media texts. I also included the name of the magazine on every piece in the same font as the
masthead of the magazine. This shows very obviously that both the ancillary texts are for the Dales Monthly magazine.
Another way I think the combination of my main
product and ancillary works effectively is that all
the media texts have the same content or outline
of content. The website has the same information
that is in the magazine and the billboard outlines
this information. This cohesion of topics between
all the media texts helps the audience know that
the media texts are all related to each other. I
think this is effective because the audience will
know that the website is for the magazine and
they’ll know that the billboard is for the magazine.
In my audience research my results said that my
audience wants the same information that is in the
magazine on the website as well. This shows that
my audience likes links between the texts and
likes having different ways of accessing the
information.
One thing I did in my magazine and on my billboard is to include the website address so there is a
link between these media texts and my website. This helps the audience to understand that there
is a website for the magazine and what the address for that website is. This means the audience
has more ways to access the magazine and therefore more ways to interact with the magazine.
Another aspect of my media texts is that
the front cover of the magazine is on both
the website and billboard. The inclusion
of the front cover shows very obviously to
the audience that the website and
billboard are for the magazine.
I used the same image on the website and magazine contents page.
This creates a visual link between the website and contents page
showing the audience the 2 media texts are linked. This makes the
combination of the magazine and ancillary text (website) effective
because it is easy for the audience to know the 2 media texts are
related to each other.
Do these factors increase or decrease the likelihood of the
audience buying the magazine?
• I believe the aspects of my media texts that link my magazine, billboard and website together will
increase the audience’s interest in the magazine and therefore making them more likely to buy the
magazine.
• I think this because the audiences interest will be increased because of the different ways they can
discover and access the magazine. This increases their interest because they are more likely to find out
what is in the magazine and therefore find out if the magazine is something they would buy and read.
• The links also help the likelihood of people buying the magazine because the audience can easily link
the media texts together and will therefore recognise the magazine and it’s conventions (colour scheme,
images, contents) when they see it in a shop.
• My magazine, billboard, and website fit with what my target audience wanted from my media texts. They
follow what my target audience wanted and therefore make them a very effective combination. When
creating my media texts I followed very closely what my audience asked for therefore I’m confident my
media texts are appealing to my target audience and work effectively together.
Similar products
• When creating my media texts I analysed and used
similar products to help me create my magazine,
billboard and website.
• These products all had links to each other that were
very obvious and helpful; I used these as guidance to
know how to create good links between my media
texts.
• I noticed that these products include the same
information on the website and in the magazine so I
decided to do the same.
• Unfortunately I could not find any billboard
advertisements for Yorkshire Dales adverts so I had to
analyze billboards for fashion magazines meaning I
could not see the links other magazines make
between their billboard and magazine that is
specifically relevant. However, I did manage to find
some general links between the media texts and
these helped me create my media texts.
