1.WHAT IS IELTS?
The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is a
standardized English language test designed for foreign speakers
who wish to study, work and live in an English-speaking environment.
3
2.Introduction to IELTS Listening
• You have 30 seconds to look at the questions in each section
before the recording starts. (Make sure that you use the time to
read the questions, so that you know what type of information you
should be listening for.) The listening is played only once. If you miss
something the first time, you will not have another chance to hear
it. The voices which you hear may be English, Australian, American,
and England sounds very different from a south London accent.
• The recording will always start with an introduction telling you some
background information about what you are going to hear. This will
be followed by instructions about what you have to do with the
information.
4
3.IELTS LISTENING INSTRUCTION
• if you cannot hear the audio clearly, let a member of staff know
straightaway
• follow the instructions carefully; they may be different to practice or
previous tests
• listen for the specific information you want
• try and anticipate what the speaker will say; this will require concentration
• do not worry if there is a word you do not understand; you may not need
to use it
• if you do not know the answer to a question, attempt it but do not waste
time; move quickly onto the next one
• be careful with your spelling and grammar.
5
3.IELTS LISTENING INSTRUCTION
• do not panic if you think the topic is too difficult or the speaker is too fast;
relax and tune in
• read, write and listen at the same time
• focus precisely on what you are asked to do in completion type questions
• pay attention to the word limit; for example, if you are asked to complete
a sentence using no more than two words, if the correct answer is
‘leather coat’, the answer ‘coat made of leather’ would be incorrect
• if the question asks you to complete the note ‘in the…’ and the correct
answer is ‘morning’, note that ‘in the morning’ would be incorrect; the
correct answer is 'morning'
• attempt all questions; there are no penalties for incorrect answers
• check your answers
6
4.KNOW THE TEST FORMAT
If you are going to write any kind of test you
should know the test format before the
actual preparation starts because unless
and until know the test format you can't
finish it on time. So before going to take IELTS
test you have to be familiar with test format
to score high.
7
4.1.The IELTS Listening test consists of four section:
Section1: A conversation between two people set in an everyday
social context, e.g. a conversation in an accommodation agency.
Section2: A Monologue set in an everyday social context, e.g. a
speech about local facilities.
Section3: a conversation between up to four people set in an
educational or training context, e.g. a university tutor and a student
discussing an assignment.
Section4: a monologue on an academic subject, e.g. a university
lecture
8

7. HERE ARE SOME THINGS YOU CAN DO EVERY
DAY TO IMPROVE YOUR LISTENING SKILLS
15
1). Mutual Discussions in English
Language: Participation in discussions helps
in improving speaking as well as listening
skills. It provides an opportunity to speak
and listen to English language. You can
discuss with your class fellows on different
topics Try to engage in discussions in English
language as more as possible if you want
to groom your listening and speaking
skills.
7. HERE ARE SOME THINGS YOU CAN DO EVERY
DAY TO IMPROVE YOUR LISTENING SKILLS
2) Read the news in the morning,
then watch the news on TV or the
internet or listen to the radio/podcast on
the same news stories of the day. Having
read the stories first, you’re able to see
key words/new vocabulary that you can
look up and become familiar with the
key facts of the stories. With a
background understanding of the main
ideas and main details, you’ll be able to
understand the same news stories (which
may be presented in different ways) that
you listen to on the TV, radio or on a
podcast.
16
HERE ARE SOME THINGS YOU CAN DO EVERY
DAY TO IMPROVE YOUR LISTENING SKILLS
3) Watch movies and TV shows with English subtitles. Watch with a pencil and notebook!!
Take note of new words and expressions. Then watch the movie again without the
subtitles. This time you’ll have the familiarity of the story, dialogue and new expressions.
Listen to the intonation and how people’s words are connected when they’re in a
conversation.
17
HERE ARE SOME THINGS YOU CAN DO EVERY
DAY TO IMPROVE YOUR LISTENING SKILLS
4) Listen to English music.
There’ YouTube, Spotify (which
I’ve only recently discovered
and love), iTunes… find your
music. And do a search on the
lyrics as well. Make the
connections as you read the
lyrics and hear them being
sung. Then listen without the
lyrics.
