Ida M. Cannon was a pioneering social worker in the medical field. She was born in 1877 in Milwaukee and attended the University of Minnesota and Boston School of Social Work. Cannon volunteered at Massachusetts General Hospital and went on to head their social services department. She traveled the country promoting the inclusion of social workers in hospitals and helped establish the American Association of Hospital Social Workers. Cannon received honorary doctorate degrees from Boston University and University of New Hampshire. She played a pivotal role in establishing social workers as an integral part of the medical profession before her death in 1960 at age 83.
