Ida M. Cannon
1877-1960
Early years.
• Ida was born in Milwaukee
• She was the third of four children of Colbert
Cannon and his wife Wilma.
• She attended St. Paul High School she then
attended University of Minnesota, where she
heard a lecture by Jane Addams on “living
conditions of the poor”.
• Attended the Boston School of Social Work.
Career
• Volunteered at the social services for
Massachusetts General Hospital.
• Became head of the department of the social
services for the hospital.
• Worked with Dr. Richard Clark Cabot on a
study that examined ways that they could
present industrial diseases in Massachusetts
General Hospital.
Career Continued.
• Determined to get a social worker
department to be in every hospital she
traveled around the whole country meeting
with the hospital's staff and directors.
• She developed a specialized training program
that mirrored the program in Boston School of
Social Work.
• She authored the first text of the medical
social worker field.
Social Work Contribution
• She help created the American Association of
Hospital Social Worker and served as the
president from 1920-1922.
• Cannon represented the social work profession a
delegate to the White House Conference on Child
Health and Protection in 1930 and in 1931.
• She also expanded her belief in social work and
took her plan international to the International
Conference on Social Work in Frankfurt,
Germany.
Social Work Contributions Continued..
• In 1938 her efforts led to Social Workers in the
medical field as profession.
Recognition
• Awarded an honorary Doctor of Science
Degree from Boston University.
• Awarded an honorary Doctor of Humanities
degree from the University of New Hampshire.
• Established what we come to know the term
“social worker” with regards to being in a
hospital.
Death
• Ida Cannon reluctantly retired in 1945, But still
remained a consultant to the hospital.
• Suffered a stroke in 1957, moved into a
nursing home.
• Died at the age of 83.
