Incidence of poultry
diseases in winter season
Winter Season
 Winter season has negative impact on poultry production by
lowering the temperature of surrounding.
 During winter when temperature goes down below 550 F
 Due to outbreak of diseases, various problem occurs like-
o increased FCR in broiler
o decreased weight gain
o reduction in egg production
o reduction in water intake
o reduction in fertility and hatchability
Common diseases during winter season
1. Newcastle disease,
2. Infectious bursal disease,
3. Inclusion body hepatitis,
4. Mycoplasmosis,
5. Brooder pneumonia,
6. Ascitis,
7. Visceral Gout,
8. Ammonia problem.
Disease Management
during Winter Season
Newcastle disease
Causal Agent: Avian Paramyxovirus (APMV-1)
Symptoms
# Depression, coughing, sneezing
# Watery greenish diarrhea
# Paralysis of wing, torticollis
# Drop in production
# Haemorrhage in trachea, proventriculus
and under eyelid.
Pevention: Volvac ND Conc. KV
Supportive treatment: Moxacil Vet, Ciprocin Vet, Immolyte Liquid,
Andopan Powder at recommended dose
Infectious Bursal Disease
Causal Agent: Avibirnavirus
Symptoms
# Depression, Inappetance
# Unsteady gait, Vent pecking
# Diarrhoea with urates in mucus
# Loss of appetite and elevated water consumption
# Haemorrhage in the junction between proventriculucs &
Gizard
Pevention: Volvac IBD MLV
Supportive treatment: Ciprocin Vet, Nephrocare, Immolyte
Liquid, Andopan Powder at recommended dose
Inclusion body hepatitis
Causal Agent : Avian Adenovirus
Symptoms
# Listless, ruffled feathers.
# Mortality up to 25 %
# Enlarged liver with pinpoint necrotic and
haemorrhagic spots
# Straw color fluid around the heart
# Kidneys are pale.
Pevention: Maintain biosecurity
Mycoplasmosis
Causal Agent : Mycoplasma galisepticum
Symptoms
# Sneezing and general
# respiratory distress.
# Drop in egg production 20-30 %
# Decrease hatchability
# Congested Lung with airsaculitis
Prevention:
Vaccine
Brooder Pneumonia
Causal Agent: Aspergillus fumigatus
Symptoms
# Birds are depressed and thirsty
# Gasping and rapid breathing
# Mortality 5 to 50 %.
# Yellow-white pin head sized lesions can be found in lung
# Sometimes all body cavities are filled with small yellow-
green granular fungus growth
Prevention & Treatment:
# Choice and quality of litter is important to prevent the fungal
spore bearing wood shavings or straw are used.
Ascitis
Causes: Associated with inadequate supplies of oxygen due to poor
ventilation
Symptoms
# Develop pulmonary hypertension syndrome
# Distended abdomen due to presence of fluid
# Liver swollen
# Presence of clear yellow fluid and clots of fibrin in the
hepatoperitoneal spaces
# The lungs are extremely congested and edematous
Prevention:
Provide major antioxidant compounds such as vitamin E & selenium (E-Sel
Soluton), vitamin A (Es ADE Liquid), vitamin C (Envit-C Liquid) with proper
ventilation.
Visceral Gout
Gout: Deposition of uric acid crystals in visceral organs like kidney, liver,
heart and gut
Causal Factor: nImproper energy-protein ratio, Excess Calcium
medication, Deficiency of Vitamin-A, Mycotoxin, Kidney damage
Symptoms
# Outbreaks is seen in young chicks (baby chick nephropathy)
# Depression, low feed intake and growth.
# Chalky white deposits on pericardium, liver, air sacs, peritoneum
# Similar deposits may be present in the kidney.
Prevention & treatment:
# Maintain Ca-P ratio & provide adequate water
# Avoid excess dietary protein for chicks, # Provide Vitamin A & Toxin
Binder
# Provide urine acidifiers, potassium chloride, ammonium chloride and
ammonium sulphate through water.
Ammonia problem
Causal Factor: High protein diet, Poor ventilation, Improper
digestion
Symptoms
#Eye irritation, conjunctivitis and damage the cornea
# Ammonia levels above 25 ppm in the poultry house can
damage the bird's respiratory system
# Increase susceptibility to infection and disease such as
colibasillosis, mycoplasmosis, hock burn etc.
Prevention and Treatment:
# Provide proper ventilation and good quality feed with good
quality additives.
