What is Infertility?
 Infertility: is a condition of the reproductive system that prevents the
conception of children. It affects approximately 10-15% of couples
throughout the United States. The diagnosis of infertility is usually
given to couples who have been attempting to conceive for at least 1
year without success.
 This affects a large group of adults in the United States and has both
physical and emotional strain when trying to have a kid.
Infertility in Women
 Infertility for women can come in the form of
 Damaged eggs
 Blocked fallopian tubes
 Unable to fertilize egg
 Insufficient embryo quality
 Hormones and physical environment
There are many factors that can affect a women's fertility before and
after contraception.
The most common problem is ovulation disorders.
Infertility in Women
 Compared to popular belief that infertility is the woman's fault, only
one-third of pregnancy issues occur from the women alone.
 There are hormonal treatments and surgery that can help a women try
and fix these issues.
Some of these are very invasive and dangerous and have not yet been
perfected
Infertility in Men
 Most infertility in men is caused by
 Azoospermia (no sperm cells)
 Oligospermia (few sperm cells are produced)
 The sperm can die before they reach the egg
In rare cases it can be caused by a genetic factor such as cystic
fibrosis.
Or by a chromosomal abnormality.
For men with low sperm count there are hormonal supplements that
are available over the counter.
Should I get tested?
 The American Society of Reproductive Medicine recommends that
women under 35 begin testing after trying to conceive unsuccessfully
for 12 months.
 Over 35 should be tested after 6 months of trying to conceive
 Some couples test just to know that everything is normal, to lessen
the stress.
Treatments for infertility
 Approximately 85-90% of infertility cases are treated with
conventional therapies
 This includes surgical repair and hormonal treatment
 Couples also find it helpful to talk to other couples with similar issues
and talk about it.
Other routes
 You can try In Vitro Fertilization
 But its expensive and not guaranteed to work
 Adoptions and foster home can be just as rewarding
 Don’t let Infertility make you feel less of a man or women because
of this disability.
