GOD SENT HELP TO HUMANS “RASy”

gopinathr@go-past.com
A few years ago, I was travelling by an express train to Chennai
from Ahmadabad. Even though it was a reserved compartment,
people who are shuttling in between major stations for their work
also boarded the compartment and it became crowded. Some of
them talking aloud, some listening to music, in short the decibel
level in that compartment was very high. So high that I could not
even read the fiction book I was having in my hand. In the same
bay a lady was sleeping with her small child by her side. The child
could be 6 months old, I think. I could not understand how she
could sleep in this noisy surroundings. May be she must have been
very tired.

Suddenly a quarrel erupted in the next bay and people where
shouting at each other at the top of their voices. I was worried that
the sleeping child should not be frightened by the noise, so I was
trying to pacify the groups that were quarrelling, telling them to
mind that children are sleeping nearby, the quarrel got reduced and
slowly people dispersed. In the meanwhile some vendors selling
tea, candies, peanuts came into the compartment selling their
products loudly. All the while my attention was on that small child
that these people are unmindfully disturbing the innocent sleep.
But both the mother and the child were sleeping blissfully amidst
this din.

At one point the child moaned slightly, the mother woke up,
consoled the child and both went back to sleep. The child’s
moaning was hardly audible, it was very slight and was very brief.

How is it that the mother who could sleep with all the noise around
her, as if she was deaf, could wake up at the slight moan of her
child? It was as if she had fitted a filter in her ears, that all other
noises did not enter the ear, and only the child’s voice entered in. Is
such a filter possible? If so should it be given to us by mother
nature, like in this specific case the mother’s love for the small one.
or can we set this filter.
One of the components of our brain is the “Reticular Activating
System”. I would hereafter in this article refer it as RASy. This acts
as that filter.

You would have seen this type of filter in your houses in kitchens, that is
used to filter pounded or grounded flour this RASy functions like this. Let us
say, that 4 types of cereals or pulses got mixed, to separate one from the
other the mix is poured into the filtering tray and shook. The filter is set to
allow only one particular type of cereal, so only that gets through the net in
the filter and the balance remain on in the tray itself.

Lets get back to the train journey mentioned above. The noise from the
surroundings fell on the ears of that lady, but the RASy filtered it, but allowed
only child’s moan to be registered in her brain. (Consciousness), the balance
remains outside.

This picture shows the location of RASy. All
the impulses, signals received by the eyes,
ears and the other senses come to the
RASy and then passed on to the other parts
of the brain for interpretation and
implementation. The blue lines in the picture
indicate the impulses received through the
senses.
Now let us examine the features, functions and the uses of this
RASy:

When a person is holding a very important position in an
organisation or in politics, he will be getting too many visitors. Too
many people would want his attention. So he appoints a personal
secretary who can manage his appointments, so that he does not
miss out on the important visitors and also not so important visitors
are blocked.

RASy does this to the brain. Researchers say that the quantum of
the information that we see and hear every day ranges from 30GB
to 50GB. My mobile phone has 64GB space, imagine how soon it
would get filled at this rate; RASy ensures that the brain is not
overloaded. That way it optimises the energy consumption also.
Even though in size, our brain is just 2% of the whole body, it
consumes 20% of the energy that the whole body takes in. It is a
major consumer of energy.

RASy controls your conscious awareness. One person with his
family and a friend visited a multi brand car showroom. After
looking at various options he and his family selected a blue colour
STOPS BRAIN OVERLOADING
CONTROLS CONSCIOUS AWARENESS
Swift 1200CC auto transmission. His friend was however feeling a
Maroon colour Honda City could be a better choice. The family
decided that once the loan is sanctioned from his office, that is in
another fortnight they will pay and take delivery of the car.

From the showroom to their house the family, along with his friend
traveled by a cab. It took about 40 minutes to reach home. In this
40 minutes, he and his family spotted 15 blue swift 1200CC cars.
They were discussing that most of the people are buying that car.
His friend could spot almost as many Maroon Honda city car on
the roads. Both are travelling in the same cab on the same route. It
is not that on that given day, those many blue cars were placed on
the road, or the owners of those cars decided that this day is the
right day to take a ride in their cars. It could be their daily routine.
All this while they would have been riding on the same roads,
probably this family would have crossed them often, but now they
are aware about their presence.

This is the effect of RASy.

But let us say, having appointed a secretary you have not guided
as who is to be allowed to meet you, what calls to be transferred to
you, and what needs to be filtered away, he will function as per his
understanding. In both the examples I quoted above the RASy was
set by itself. Can we set it the way we want it to function, so that
we can take abundant advantage of this Wonder tool that the
Almighty has gifted us?

Yes, we can set it the way we want it to function. One of the
important findings of the researchers on RASy is that it spotlights
the “Important” and blind-spots the “Junk”. What does it consider
as important to us? Anything that is either “Beneficial” or anything
SPOTLIGHT ON IMPORTANT
the appears as “Threat” is taken as “IMPORTANT”. Once it is
recognised as “IMPORTANT” RASy is set to help that, spotlight all
that is related to it and blindspot other things. Let us revisit the
example of the train travel and the lady sleeping amidst that noise
and waking up to the feeble moan of the child. We now understand
how RASy filtered the noise around.

Most of the times the past experience and the emotional states
undergone during those situations, have taught the brain what is
“IMPORTANT”. Other than that, there are basic human instincts
which have intuitively informed the brain “IMPORTANT”. That is
why RASy filters in or filters out the impulses received through our
senses differently for different people.

A person is annoyed at the neighbour’s dog barking at night, he
feels that his sleep is often disturbed. To the extent even while
going to bed he says, now the dog will start barking for no reason,
and my sleep will be off. But surprisingly the neighbour whose dog
is barking at night are not disturbed. It is not that they got used to
it. Because here RASy is not alerting them. But even a slightly
different way of barking makes them wake up and ask the dog,
what happened? Does it mean that the neighbour who is feeling
disturbed now will get used to the dog barking in some time. No,
he will never get to reach that state. Because he has informed his
mind that this noise is a Threat (to his peace), meaning it is
“IMPORTANT”, So every time the dog barks the noise passes
through the RASy and reaches the conscious awareness state
moving from the sleep state. For the owners of the dog it worked
the other way. Their dog barking is not a threat, but barking
differently is a threat. So it is “IMPORTANT” RASy filter in operation
now.

A boy in the class is able to absorb all that the teacher is teaching
well. All the words uttered by the teacher, all the writings on the
board reaches his brain and his conscious mind receives the inputs
well. For him this subject is “IMPORTANT”: for his future.
RASy not only spots things close by, it scans the environment and
quickly spots help for us. So much so that, many times such help
will appear as if “God sent”. A salesman suddenly gets a strong
referral from his client which resulted into a very big order. A boy
preparing for his exam finds a new guide book that makes the
subject easy to understand. A girl preparing for a singing
competition stumbles upon a very old song that gives her the tune
for the lyrics she had written a while ago, so on and so on. (To
substantiate on how this happens please read articles and books
of Dr V Ramachandran on Phantom limbs, and Gandhi Neurons
where a societal connection happens between a society of neurons
not just of an individual but a group of individuals)

A few years ago, I got an offer to talk to the parents of children of a
school. The principal told me specifically on how the parents
should communicate with their children should form the core of my
talk to them. He said that they needed training in counselling the
children. My presentation will be for about 3 hours. The parents,
teachers and the children also will be present in the audience. The
children whose parents I am supposed to talk to are less than 10
years of age. Some of the parents are doctors, some of them are
qualified psychologists, and most of them are highly educated. I
had about 2 months time to prepare for this session.

I have done sessions on counselling for managers, doctors,
businessmen and even police officials on counselling their staff,
clients, patients and so on. But this offer that I am having in my
hand is a different ball game altogether. In my training on
counselling we teach them the basics of communication,
classifying the individuals into 4 quadrants to decide the
counselling strategy. Inquiry, probing, advocating, anchoring and
such topics. But then in all these cases the Counselled person is
an adult, mostly capable of articulating their feelings and
understanding well. But with children and that too being counselled
by pampering parents, is different. I have to reorient my approach
LIKE A GOD SENT HELP (VISIBLE AND AUDIBLE)
to something which is less technical but more effective. My mind
was working on the options for such approach.

One day I was at Chennai airport ready to board a flight to Mumbai,
and an announcement came that the flight is delayed by an hour.
So I decided to visit the Higginbothams book store. I wanted to
buy an abridged version of the Wealth of Nations by Adam smith to
give it as a gift to the top three participants of the session in
Mumbai. (The training was on personal finance). As I was standing
before the economics shelf and my eyes quickly scanning for this
book, from the corner of my eye I saw the title of a book in another
shelf meant for children “Stories from the grandmother on good
habits”. That is it. I got my approach “Story telling”. I grabbed a
few books from that shelf and moved to board the flight. My topic
for the presentation was “Fairy tales create Angels” I dwelt upon
the stories of great leaders like Mahatma Gandhi, Maharaj Shivaji
and Swamy Vivekananda and the role of the stories their mothers
have been telling them in their childhood. I could easily fit all the
aspects of counselling and motivation which I have been training
the professionals into “Story telling”. I related the concepts of Right
brain functioning and even Maslow’s need hierarchy theorem into
story telling techniques.

The session was very successful. There was overwhelming
response from both the parents and the teachers One of the
psychologist (parent) told me in the end that at times he used to
feel talking to his little boy was very difficult for him. He use to
sense the lack of Trust, with the boy not confiding in him with
details and he also felt his approaches many times in terms of
“carrot and stick approach” was manipulative and he used to feel
guilty about it, but after attending this session he got a very good
idea what changes he (parent) has to make into himself to be a
better parent and also to effectively counsel his boy.

If I would have taken my usual class on counselling skills and
techniques, it would have been disastrous. The approach which I
took to explain some of the same techniques in form of story telling
by parents worked and it became effective. What will you call this,
Coincidence? Stroke of Luck? Presence of Mind? or God sent
help?
All these days it just passed off like a lucky breakthrough, But now
that we are aware of the functioning of RASy, we can make such
breakthroughs happen often in our life. We can use this to attract
resources from far far away, that makes our job easy. We can
invoke the blessings of great people on our ventures. We can spot
potential investors and attract funds into our ventures. Attract right
type of people on our projects. It is as if Destiny playing on our side
of the team.

Not just as God sent help; look at one more benefit of RASy
functioning our way. We can condition ourselves to reach a state of
a water droplet on a lotus leaf. It is there, but not in it. While we do
not have control on our surroundings, we do have control on
whether we allow it to bother us or not. To divert us from our
designed path or to stay fixed on the path designed for us. This is
what “Meditators” do to themselves.

No doubt you need lots of practice to achieve this state of
expertise. But now you know the basis of this technique, so you
can with repeated attempts perfect this technique. Remember the
word “IMPORTANT”. Left to himself the secretary will decide what
is important for you and keep sending visitors to you accordingly.
You need to instruct the secretary on what is “IMPORTANT” for
you.

The person who feels disturbed by the noise, has developed an
affiliation to it. Negative albeit. It is now “IMPORTANT” for him. It
threatens him. But suppose he focuses on something more
“IMPORTANT”, this disturbance recedes into a mere shadow.

My profession as a Trainer/Consultant makes it necessary for me
that most of these days I stay in hotels of various cities. I have
DROPLET ON LOTUS LEAF
often experienced (more often in 5 star hotels) that late nights the
corridors become noisy. Groups of people coming back to their
rooms, talking loudly, and then unlocking their rooms, followed by
Room service.

While in the bed preparing to sleep often I think about the prepared
material for the next day session. I slip into sleep. I have
experienced breakthrough ideas somewhere in deep slumber, that
while I wake up, makes me rush to my laptop to make such
alterations to my preparations. You must notice one thing now,
since RASy was working on it, the noises of the service personnel
and the guests in the corridor did not disturb my sleep. RASy puts
me into sleep state.

We set yearly goals for business performances. If it is
“IMPORTANT” then RASy, scans environment 24X7 with infinite
range and spotlights all that info required, help that will aid, ensure
that we achieve our goals. We defined in the previous pages that
whatever the brain considers as beneficial or that poses a threat is
taken as “IMPORTANT” by the brain. Let us say the goal set was
50% growth over the previous year. While somewhere at the
bottom of our mind we feel even 10% is a good one, that can
provide for good benefits, and still we agree to accept the
challenge of 50% growth. “IMPORTANT” for the brain is 10%. You
can now understand what role RASy will play.

On the other hand the brain also weighs the efforts taken to bring
in that 50% growth, it could be a huge price to pay. The brain
senses the threat, so it is now “IMPORTANT” to avoid that. All the
information of the huge price, consequent losses in other areas of
life because of this price, is brought into the conscious awareness
state. Even though we try to suppress this often, fighting it with the
GOAL SETTING AND RASy
motivational slogans and positive thinking, RASy persists and
selectively spot lights and selectively blind spots with the result
that our actions are conditioned to produce a near 10% growth.

So what is the solution? How to make it “IMPORTANT”?

1) Write down the goals. Bring your dreams and goals into a written
format. In the order of importance, The brain takes written down
statements more important than just intentions or even oral
pronouncements. Because what is written stays for long. In one
of the colonies in US, they had placed a board at the entrance to
the colony reading ‘Closed for two days, will open on Monday”
Visitors stopped at the board and many were prepared to return
on Monday and turn back. The survey team nearby enquired
them why they are returning back?, they answered this colony is
closed for two days. There were a few exceptions though. What
is written is considered more in value than what is being told.

2) Create a hype on the benefits by vividly visualising the end
result. Relate it to all the stakeholders and see how this will
benefit them. Images and pictures related to the end result serve
as props to ingrain in the brain “IMPORTANCE”.

3) Share your commitments with a set of people. Go public on your
intentions. This way, the brain registers this goal as an
“IMPORTANT” one and is also aware about the name and fame
that will follow, achieving that goal, particularly from those
people who knew our decision to pursue that goal/dreams.

Many times with good intentions our actions create problems for
us. For example, the more we think “This should not happen in my
life”. Or when we imagine “If that happens then i will be doomed”
These negative commands create a RASy which spots information
related to that and highlights such things that we should not be
seeing or hearing. Seeing and hearing such information is going to
make us weak. Seeing and hearing means not just that those
images fell on our retina or on our ear drums, it means that, that
information has reached our conscious mind. It can disturb us. Can
shake our self confidence. Instead let us think of what should be
happening to us. Instead let us focus on what we want to happen.
Let us also visualise the benefits of such happenings. Even Though
as ordinary human beings, we will still be dragged into the habit of
wishing the “Not to happen”. We must practice to come back to
wishing “Should happen”. By practice we can achieve this. Let us
not deny ourselves of our rightful joy of life.

I can assure you, that if you practice this consciously you will
master this paradigm (pattern of thinking).

To Summarise:

1) RASy (Reticular Activating System) acts as Filter/Secretary/
Watchman to the brain.

2) Our Conscious awareness is governed by RASy.

3) Spotlight on “IMPORTANT” and blindspot on “JUNK”

4) Benefits and threats are “IMPORTANT” anything which is not
important is “JUNK”

5) God sent help by stumbling upon the resources which the RASy
scanned the environment far far away and brought to our notice.
Those resources pre-existed, but now noticed.

6) Droplet of water on Lotus leaf, peace with yourself

7) RASy and Goal setting.

8) If you do not instruct your secretary on whom to be let in. She
will do it as per her opinion on what is important for you.

9) You can not escape RASy. It is there and it will work. You don’t
have to escape also, you need to learn to make it work in your
favour.

10)Practice Practice Practice and keep Practicing. It is possible.

The Law of attraction which is more talked about nowadays and
the Self fulfilling Prophecies talked about a few decades ago are all
in major portion manifestations of this RASy. So if you can master
LAW OF ATTRACTION; SELF FULFILLING
PROPHECIES ARE MANIFESTATIONS OF
THE FUNCTIONING OF RASy
the art of setting up this RASy, then you can benefit from the Law
of Attractions and then Self fulfilling prophecies.
CONSCIOUSLY PRACTICE AND SET THE FILTER.

gopinathr@go-past.com
Mr Investor, Mr Advisor and Mr Fund Manager the TRIO.
The role of a Fund manager and the role of an Advisor of an
investment are different. Advisors should therefore play their role
properly and not just copy paste the endorsements and the
recommendations of the fund manager.

The focus of the Fund manager is in maximising returns of the fund
so that he can attract more investors and also earn well for the
promoters of his company. There is nothing vice about it. It is a
genuine aspiration of any business entity.

Whereas the focus of an advisor is the dreams and goals of his
client. For him this fund is a vehicle and not the destination. How
this fund helps his client to fulfil his dreams is his prime criteria for
selecting and recommending this fund to the client.
Let us look at the way the fund manager selects his stocks. To
methods of analysis are very popular in the market. 1) Fundamental
Analysis and 2) Technical analysis.

The approach of Fundamental Analysis: See the order mentioned in
pic1 in the previous page.

He further analyses the company from two angles 1) Qualitative
and 2) Quantitative. See Pic 2

Whereas the advisors selection of a fund or a stock on behalf of his
client follows this order: See pic 3
Let me explain how these two people may end up producing
different results:

Let me assume here Sensex as a Fund. The Index will be the NAV
of the fund. On a quantitative analysis of the Sensex (BSE) the FM
sees that the Sensex returned 13% CAGR. in the last 30 years. It is
a good performance. Pic 4:
Now look at what the Mr. Investor (His investment) would have
undergone during these 30 years, follow the blue line graph: Pic: 5

How many investors can handle this volatility on their capital
amount? The standard deviation during this period is 32.84. If an
advisor has just copy paste in his mind the claims of the Fund
manager of a 13% CAGR and tells his clients even if the fund in
future looses 2% on this we should still be getting 11% which is
much more than any safe investment in this country would have
given, what would have happened to the client’s investments?
There is a popular adage in equity investment: Pic: 6

There is one more popular adage in equity investments specially
with Mutual Funds: Pic 7
Now let us test both the above adages from an investors position.
The investor name Mr Investor agrees to invest ₹2,00,000 every
year for 30 years, SIP also long term also. According to his
financial plan his Financial goals are as per his financial plan is as
under:

When he invests ₹2 lac, based on that day NAV of the fund the
number of units are allotted and when he wants to withdraw a
specific amount based on the NAV of the fund that day, the number
of units are debited and the balance retained in his account, which
will get added with the future units he will earn by investing in
future.

With this requirement it is enough if the overall plan yields 12.26%
which he is quite likely to achieve. Look at the following table:
Table:1

In this calculation we are expecting an IRR of 12.26%. IRR
calculation is post-facto and appears as a linear chart (see pic) but
in reality with the volatility in the market and the dates of goals pre-
fixed for Mr Investor can he achieve this?

YEAR AMOUNT REQUIRED ₹
2000 25,00,000
2008 30,00,000
2012 30,00,000
2016 40,00,000
2020 60,00,000
Let us see. He stood by his commitment and kept investing 2 lacs
even year unmindful of whether the market is up or down. And as
per the financial plan he cashed ₹25,00,000 from the fund. For this
withdrawal 629.39 units were debited.

But with the balance of ₹7,66,202 in his account to reach his future
goals from that point the fund should perform to give a yield of
17.02% and the time left is 20 years. (Table:2 Purple mark)
In 2008 he encashed 310.97 units to avail ₹30,00,000 from the
fund, after this withdrawal he had a balance of ₹12,86, 685.73 in
his account. With this balance and future investments of ₹2lac
every year the fund need to perform very well to give a yield o
28.24% in the next 12 years. (Table:2 Blue mark)

in 2012 he encashed 154.43 units to avail ₹30,00,000 according to
the plan. He is left with ₹4,54,319.59 in his account with this as
opening balance and future investment of ₹2lac every year to reach
his goal the fund should really really perform well to give a yield of
58.33% in the next 8 years. (Table: 2 Red mark)

In fact he may not have any units left in his account after some
time. (Table: 3)
You will find here 30 year is long term (Adage), SIP of ₹200000
(Adage), Did not time the market, kept investing on the due date.
The Fund has performed well. But it did not serve the purpose
of Mr Investor.
So how to advice Mr Investor on investments. (10 steps Process)

1 )
First draw a map of life. (Pic: 8). See that the need for Protection in
the form of Life Insurance, Critical Illness, Disability insurance and
need to protect the existing assets through other insurance plans
including health insurance.

2) Mark all Major junctions that is to say time when huge amount
of money required for certain needs like Children Higher education
Deposits/donations/capitation fees/ payment seat and so on.
Grand auspicious marriage of Daughter (for Son also), Purchase of
bigger residence, etc. (Pic:8)
3) Then classify the Junctions as Not negotiable junctions, Nice to
have junctions. Quantify the money required into 3 categories
Money required to fulfil the need at a “Minimum Level” at a
“Reasonable Level” and at “Aspirational Level”. (Pic:8)

4) Ascertain the amount that he can invest/save to reach those
goals considering cashflow available and required factoring
increments, business growths, inflation and replacement of
personal assets due to wear and tear.

5) First select financial products that carry the least risk on capital
to fund the Junctions at a minimum level separately for each
Junction and encourage Mr Investor to look for products that carry
risk, can be volatile for the Reasonable and Aspirational level.

6) Ascertain the Capability to undertake such risk and also the
financial capacity to handle that risk.

7) Based on this data select suitable investment options for Mr
Investor. At this point use your knowledge on analysis of
investments, like the ratios, trends, IRR, etc.

8) Be guided by Financial Pyramid structure and submit your
recommendations. And execute the purchases (the whole mix)
agreed upon.

9) Periodic review of the map/junctions/Performances of the
assets.

10) Emotionally support Mr Investor during tough times, to keep
the plan in tact. So as to enjoy the fulfilment of his needs.

Please remember Mr Advisor, “GOOD ADVISORS DON’T SELL
INVESTMENTS. THEY ONLY HELP Mr. INVESTOR TO FUFIL HIS
GOALS BY INVESTING.”

Mr Aniket Patel
Need an Expert for a Financial Planning
In the era of technology, there is so much information available in the market through the internet.
Some are very useful and the rest is misleading. So, we need the right guide who can show us the
right way to do whatever we want to do. There are so many medicines in the market & we know
how to consume it however we need the right doctor who can suggest it. Sometimes we stuck in the
situation where we need an expert to advise us. Still, most of the people take the risk and
unfortunately, they find themselves in a tinderbox.
Financial Planning is a very wide subject and we always need the right advisor to give us the right
advice on this subject. Most of the people nowadays are looking for return based investment
however they forget to take care of a very important factor and that is Risk For e ample e are
always taking our child for the vaccine for a specific period but why do we do that? We are aware of
the risk if we do not take care of the child vaccination then there are high chances of diseases in the
future. We can see the potential risk, but we ignore it most of the times.
In general, most of the people take advice from relatives, friends and inner circle but there is one
question that arise Are the qualified for the same If es there is no problem but if no then it s a
big matter of worry. Why? Because they see your situation from their point of view & an expert will
see the situation the way it is.
Many a times, people are afraid of the term 'insurance' but they are not consciously aware, they are
dealing with risk management system through a different medium. Yes, there are endless examples
which can prove it. For example, fire safety, watchman, bank lockers, etc are such risk management
systems only. We never. know when can an unfortunate event take place but precaution is very
important.
Financial planning is a ver ide subject and to understand it and it s application e need an e pert
Risk management is the base of financial planning. We need to start with financial goals where we
need to plan our financial expenses for various purposes. Now, the question is whether our need
requires a secured amount or an unsecured amount. If that amount is secured and a necessity, then
one would risk It must be protected because the future events will occur when the right time comes
and it will be associated with the cost. It does not relate to our presence whether we will be alive or
not. It will take place and it is sure.
Now, most of the people are making the right investment planning with the wrong investment
instrument at the wrong time and as a result, they fail miserably. So, what should they do? They
have to listen to a Financial Advisor who is guiding them by his knowledge & information, with
scientific calculation which surely give the desired result. When the right work is done by an expert,
it will lead to the right destination.
Many people asked me, why should I include insurance in financial planning? My answer is always
the same there is onl one certaint in life and that is death, till we alive, we can generate capital
and create wealth through it for future consumption, but the question arises, what if we are not
alive What about our basic e penses Ho ill our famil survive Don t see life insurance as hen
a person dies then the nominee only will get the money. Life insurance is a risk management tool
which can protect you as well as your family with their future financial goals. I conclude with the fact
that right investment is always in mixed. It must be in combination of the need but with the
protection. People are afraid of seeing the real picture and it is the duty to guide them throughout
time.
There are two advisors in Mahabharata, one is lord Krishna and another is mama Shakuni. Rest of
the story you kno ver ell That s h the right e pert advisor is crucial to guide ou for financial
planning.
Are we taking legal advice from relatives who are not lawyer? Are we allowing a doctor who is not
surgeon but a friend to conduct surgery? The answer is simply no because they are not qualified for
such a job Obviousl e prefer the best paediatrician for the child s health best heart surgeon for a

Our Birth can be an Event, but our Death has to be a History
Between Birth and Death is the Life which we live, which I consider the
greatest gift of God. And we have to make this life meaningful and one
which others can look up to as being a role model. Life and Death are
not in our control but the entire life from the stage of being a high
school student till the end it is we who are fully responsible for how we
shape it to be.
If we hit a nail in the wall, and then remove the nail it leaves a
permanent mark on the wall. It is up to us to decide what mark do we
want to leave in this world when we leave it with dignity. The way we
lead our life should be a motivation and inspiration to our family
members, our staff and fellow professionals.
As a Financial Advisor I feel we can never compromise on the following
3 qualities or traits
1) HONESTY
2) TRUST and
3) Our BRAND
I would like to express my views on the 4 tiers of our life which we
need to focus on, so that our life attains great speed. Just like when
we drive our car on a highway, to attain good speed and a good fuel
mileage, it is important that all the tyres have the correct pressure of
air. In the same manner in our life we need to focus on the 4
following aspects.
1) Physical and Mental health
2) Wealth accumulation and Savings habit.
3) Cordial family relations
4) Self esteem
1) HEALTH: PHYSICAL AND MENTAL HEALTH
One question which I generally ask my clients in the first meeting
is how much time do you devote to your health well being in a
day. Generally more than 70% of them reply in a negative way
saying that they cannot devote any time towards their health
activities because of the hectic schedule. I tell them that at the
time of your retirement you will have lot of time at your
disposable and since I would be your financial advisor I am sure
you will also have a great cash flow arranged as per your
requirement. But if you do not have a good health then you would
not be in a position to enjoy the free time and the money at your
disposable. Hence I request you to start appropriating a fixed time
for your health well being.
What you eat and what you eat should be given a deep thought.
For good health you need to get sound and proper sleep. One also
need to take out proper leisure time on a regular basis to do
things one enjoys from within.
Along with physical health, mental health is also very important
and the best way to attain it is early morning meditation. Having
good relations with family members including parents and your
staff members will also help in having good mental peace.
You need to show empathy towards the society watchman, the
postman who delivers letters, the staff at the petrol pump and
such other persons who you are in touch with.
2) WEALTH I am a firm believer that in life you cannot achieve right
results by using wrong methods. Earn wealth by using correct
methods. You and your family will definitely enjoy such money
earned by right means. Right from the time we start earning its
important to cultivate the habit of savings. I generally feel one
should enjoy the process of savings and it should not be a burden.
Generally it seems that happiness comes from money, or rather
one can buy happiness. But its not the case, I am a firm believer
that happiness comes from the art of building long term
relationships. Money is important for happiness but its not the
only thing.
3) FAMILY RELATIONS.What the family members expect from us is
love, time and respect. So if you observe minutely this does not
require money. I have found that families having dinner together
and where lot of the family members have cultivated reading
habit generally have great relationships. Parents and children can
recommend each other great books which can be read. Each
family member should feel free to share their mankibaat with
each other. In case of any difficulty answers should be first sought
from the family members. In building up good family relations we
have to work towards building our EQ, I mean our emotional
quotient. Its said if one gets angry quite often then his EQ is low.
We need to understand our feelings and the feelings of others
also. We need to correlate both the feelings in such a way that
there is a win win situation of all.
4) SELF ESTEEM. Here I need to know the purpose of my life. I need
to know if I as an individual I respect myself. If I do not respect
myself then the world is not going to respect me. I will narrate my
own experience where I found my self esteem to go up
tremendously. In this lock down period I decided, with the
support of the Almight, to pay full salary to my staff members
inspite of they having no proper work for 3 full months. It was not
their fault. This full salary payment helped to increase my self
esteem and the confidence level and the morale of the staff
members is also high in this difficult period.
If we have to attain good vehicle speed and mileage when we drive on
a highway what we do is check the air pressure in all the four tiers on a
regular basis at a petrol pump.
In the same way we have to devote time to check if we are below the
required levels in any of the above mentioned 4 aspects related to our
life. This has to be done on a regular basis so that any deficiency can be
worked upon at the earliest.

GOD SENT HELPTO HUMANS “RASy” R.GOPINATH [email protected] A few years ago, I was travelling by an express train to Chennai from Ahmadabad. Even though it was a reserved compartment, people who are shuttling in between major stations for their work also boarded the compartment and it became crowded. Some of them talking aloud, some listening to music, in short the decibel level in that compartment was very high. So high that I could not even read the fiction book I was having in my hand. In the same bay a lady was sleeping with her small child by her side. The child could be 6 months old, I think. I could not understand how she could sleep in this noisy surroundings. May be she must have been very tired. Suddenly a quarrel erupted in the next bay and people where shouting at each other at the top of their voices. I was worried that the sleeping child should not be frightened by the noise, so I was trying to pacify the groups that were quarrelling, telling them to mind that children are sleeping nearby, the quarrel got reduced and slowly people dispersed. In the meanwhile some vendors selling tea, candies, peanuts came into the compartment selling their products loudly. All the while my attention was on that small child that these people are unmindfully disturbing the innocent sleep. But both the mother and the child were sleeping blissfully amidst this din. At one point the child moaned slightly, the mother woke up, consoled the child and both went back to sleep. The child’s moaning was hardly audible, it was very slight and was very brief. How is it that the mother who could sleep with all the noise around her, as if she was deaf, could wake up at the slight moan of her child? It was as if she had fitted a filter in her ears, that all other noises did not enter the ear, and only the child’s voice entered in. Is such a filter possible? If so should it be given to us by mother nature, like in this specific case the mother’s love for the small one. or can we set this filter.
  • 6.
One of thecomponents of our brain is the “Reticular Activating System”. I would hereafter in this article refer it as RASy. This acts as that filter. You would have seen this type of filter in your houses in kitchens, that is used to filter pounded or grounded flour this RASy functions like this. Let us say, that 4 types of cereals or pulses got mixed, to separate one from the other the mix is poured into the filtering tray and shook. The filter is set to allow only one particular type of cereal, so only that gets through the net in the filter and the balance remain on in the tray itself. Lets get back to the train journey mentioned above. The noise from the surroundings fell on the ears of that lady, but the RASy filtered it, but allowed only child’s moan to be registered in her brain. (Consciousness), the balance remains outside. This picture shows the location of RASy. All the impulses, signals received by the eyes, ears and the other senses come to the RASy and then passed on to the other parts of the brain for interpretation and implementation. The blue lines in the picture indicate the impulses received through the senses.
  • 7.
Now let usexamine the features, functions and the uses of this RASy: When a person is holding a very important position in an organisation or in politics, he will be getting too many visitors. Too many people would want his attention. So he appoints a personal secretary who can manage his appointments, so that he does not miss out on the important visitors and also not so important visitors are blocked. RASy does this to the brain. Researchers say that the quantum of the information that we see and hear every day ranges from 30GB to 50GB. My mobile phone has 64GB space, imagine how soon it would get filled at this rate; RASy ensures that the brain is not overloaded. That way it optimises the energy consumption also. Even though in size, our brain is just 2% of the whole body, it consumes 20% of the energy that the whole body takes in. It is a major consumer of energy. RASy controls your conscious awareness. One person with his family and a friend visited a multi brand car showroom. After looking at various options he and his family selected a blue colour STOPS BRAIN OVERLOADING CONTROLS CONSCIOUS AWARENESS
  • 8.
Swift 1200CC autotransmission. His friend was however feeling a Maroon colour Honda City could be a better choice. The family decided that once the loan is sanctioned from his office, that is in another fortnight they will pay and take delivery of the car. From the showroom to their house the family, along with his friend traveled by a cab. It took about 40 minutes to reach home. In this 40 minutes, he and his family spotted 15 blue swift 1200CC cars. They were discussing that most of the people are buying that car. His friend could spot almost as many Maroon Honda city car on the roads. Both are travelling in the same cab on the same route. It is not that on that given day, those many blue cars were placed on the road, or the owners of those cars decided that this day is the right day to take a ride in their cars. It could be their daily routine. All this while they would have been riding on the same roads, probably this family would have crossed them often, but now they are aware about their presence. This is the effect of RASy. But let us say, having appointed a secretary you have not guided as who is to be allowed to meet you, what calls to be transferred to you, and what needs to be filtered away, he will function as per his understanding. In both the examples I quoted above the RASy was set by itself. Can we set it the way we want it to function, so that we can take abundant advantage of this Wonder tool that the Almighty has gifted us? Yes, we can set it the way we want it to function. One of the important findings of the researchers on RASy is that it spotlights the “Important” and blind-spots the “Junk”. What does it consider as important to us? Anything that is either “Beneficial” or anything SPOTLIGHT ON IMPORTANT
  • 9.
the appears as“Threat” is taken as “IMPORTANT”. Once it is recognised as “IMPORTANT” RASy is set to help that, spotlight all that is related to it and blindspot other things. Let us revisit the example of the train travel and the lady sleeping amidst that noise and waking up to the feeble moan of the child. We now understand how RASy filtered the noise around. Most of the times the past experience and the emotional states undergone during those situations, have taught the brain what is “IMPORTANT”. Other than that, there are basic human instincts which have intuitively informed the brain “IMPORTANT”. That is why RASy filters in or filters out the impulses received through our senses differently for different people. A person is annoyed at the neighbour’s dog barking at night, he feels that his sleep is often disturbed. To the extent even while going to bed he says, now the dog will start barking for no reason, and my sleep will be off. But surprisingly the neighbour whose dog is barking at night are not disturbed. It is not that they got used to it. Because here RASy is not alerting them. But even a slightly different way of barking makes them wake up and ask the dog, what happened? Does it mean that the neighbour who is feeling disturbed now will get used to the dog barking in some time. No, he will never get to reach that state. Because he has informed his mind that this noise is a Threat (to his peace), meaning it is “IMPORTANT”, So every time the dog barks the noise passes through the RASy and reaches the conscious awareness state moving from the sleep state. For the owners of the dog it worked the other way. Their dog barking is not a threat, but barking differently is a threat. So it is “IMPORTANT” RASy filter in operation now. A boy in the class is able to absorb all that the teacher is teaching well. All the words uttered by the teacher, all the writings on the board reaches his brain and his conscious mind receives the inputs well. For him this subject is “IMPORTANT”: for his future.
  • 10.
RASy not onlyspots things close by, it scans the environment and quickly spots help for us. So much so that, many times such help will appear as if “God sent”. A salesman suddenly gets a strong referral from his client which resulted into a very big order. A boy preparing for his exam finds a new guide book that makes the subject easy to understand. A girl preparing for a singing competition stumbles upon a very old song that gives her the tune for the lyrics she had written a while ago, so on and so on. (To substantiate on how this happens please read articles and books of Dr V Ramachandran on Phantom limbs, and Gandhi Neurons where a societal connection happens between a society of neurons not just of an individual but a group of individuals) A few years ago, I got an offer to talk to the parents of children of a school. The principal told me specifically on how the parents should communicate with their children should form the core of my talk to them. He said that they needed training in counselling the children. My presentation will be for about 3 hours. The parents, teachers and the children also will be present in the audience. The children whose parents I am supposed to talk to are less than 10 years of age. Some of the parents are doctors, some of them are qualified psychologists, and most of them are highly educated. I had about 2 months time to prepare for this session. I have done sessions on counselling for managers, doctors, businessmen and even police officials on counselling their staff, clients, patients and so on. But this offer that I am having in my hand is a different ball game altogether. In my training on counselling we teach them the basics of communication, classifying the individuals into 4 quadrants to decide the counselling strategy. Inquiry, probing, advocating, anchoring and such topics. But then in all these cases the Counselled person is an adult, mostly capable of articulating their feelings and understanding well. But with children and that too being counselled by pampering parents, is different. I have to reorient my approach LIKE A GOD SENT HELP (VISIBLE AND AUDIBLE)
  • 11.
to something whichis less technical but more effective. My mind was working on the options for such approach. One day I was at Chennai airport ready to board a flight to Mumbai, and an announcement came that the flight is delayed by an hour. So I decided to visit the Higginbothams book store. I wanted to buy an abridged version of the Wealth of Nations by Adam smith to give it as a gift to the top three participants of the session in Mumbai. (The training was on personal finance). As I was standing before the economics shelf and my eyes quickly scanning for this book, from the corner of my eye I saw the title of a book in another shelf meant for children “Stories from the grandmother on good habits”. That is it. I got my approach “Story telling”. I grabbed a few books from that shelf and moved to board the flight. My topic for the presentation was “Fairy tales create Angels” I dwelt upon the stories of great leaders like Mahatma Gandhi, Maharaj Shivaji and Swamy Vivekananda and the role of the stories their mothers have been telling them in their childhood. I could easily fit all the aspects of counselling and motivation which I have been training the professionals into “Story telling”. I related the concepts of Right brain functioning and even Maslow’s need hierarchy theorem into story telling techniques. The session was very successful. There was overwhelming response from both the parents and the teachers One of the psychologist (parent) told me in the end that at times he used to feel talking to his little boy was very difficult for him. He use to sense the lack of Trust, with the boy not confiding in him with details and he also felt his approaches many times in terms of “carrot and stick approach” was manipulative and he used to feel guilty about it, but after attending this session he got a very good idea what changes he (parent) has to make into himself to be a better parent and also to effectively counsel his boy. If I would have taken my usual class on counselling skills and techniques, it would have been disastrous. The approach which I took to explain some of the same techniques in form of story telling by parents worked and it became effective. What will you call this, Coincidence? Stroke of Luck? Presence of Mind? or God sent help?

All these daysit just passed off like a lucky breakthrough, But now that we are aware of the functioning of RASy, we can make such breakthroughs happen often in our life. We can use this to attract resources from far far away, that makes our job easy. We can invoke the blessings of great people on our ventures. We can spot potential investors and attract funds into our ventures. Attract right type of people on our projects. It is as if Destiny playing on our side of the team. Not just as God sent help; look at one more benefit of RASy functioning our way. We can condition ourselves to reach a state of a water droplet on a lotus leaf. It is there, but not in it. While we do not have control on our surroundings, we do have control on whether we allow it to bother us or not. To divert us from our designed path or to stay fixed on the path designed for us. This is what “Meditators” do to themselves. No doubt you need lots of practice to achieve this state of expertise. But now you know the basis of this technique, so you can with repeated attempts perfect this technique. Remember the word “IMPORTANT”. Left to himself the secretary will decide what is important for you and keep sending visitors to you accordingly. You need to instruct the secretary on what is “IMPORTANT” for you. The person who feels disturbed by the noise, has developed an affiliation to it. Negative albeit. It is now “IMPORTANT” for him. It threatens him. But suppose he focuses on something more “IMPORTANT”, this disturbance recedes into a mere shadow. My profession as a Trainer/Consultant makes it necessary for me that most of these days I stay in hotels of various cities. I have DROPLET ON LOTUS LEAF
  • 13.
often experienced (moreoften in 5 star hotels) that late nights the corridors become noisy. Groups of people coming back to their rooms, talking loudly, and then unlocking their rooms, followed by Room service. While in the bed preparing to sleep often I think about the prepared material for the next day session. I slip into sleep. I have experienced breakthrough ideas somewhere in deep slumber, that while I wake up, makes me rush to my laptop to make such alterations to my preparations. You must notice one thing now, since RASy was working on it, the noises of the service personnel and the guests in the corridor did not disturb my sleep. RASy puts me into sleep state. We set yearly goals for business performances. If it is “IMPORTANT” then RASy, scans environment 24X7 with infinite range and spotlights all that info required, help that will aid, ensure that we achieve our goals. We defined in the previous pages that whatever the brain considers as beneficial or that poses a threat is taken as “IMPORTANT” by the brain. Let us say the goal set was 50% growth over the previous year. While somewhere at the bottom of our mind we feel even 10% is a good one, that can provide for good benefits, and still we agree to accept the challenge of 50% growth. “IMPORTANT” for the brain is 10%. You can now understand what role RASy will play. On the other hand the brain also weighs the efforts taken to bring in that 50% growth, it could be a huge price to pay. The brain senses the threat, so it is now “IMPORTANT” to avoid that. All the information of the huge price, consequent losses in other areas of life because of this price, is brought into the conscious awareness state. Even though we try to suppress this often, fighting it with the GOAL SETTING AND RASy
  • 14.
motivational slogans andpositive thinking, RASy persists and selectively spot lights and selectively blind spots with the result that our actions are conditioned to produce a near 10% growth. So what is the solution? How to make it “IMPORTANT”? 1) Write down the goals. Bring your dreams and goals into a written format. In the order of importance, The brain takes written down statements more important than just intentions or even oral pronouncements. Because what is written stays for long. In one of the colonies in US, they had placed a board at the entrance to the colony reading ‘Closed for two days, will open on Monday” Visitors stopped at the board and many were prepared to return on Monday and turn back. The survey team nearby enquired them why they are returning back?, they answered this colony is closed for two days. There were a few exceptions though. What is written is considered more in value than what is being told. 2) Create a hype on the benefits by vividly visualising the end result. Relate it to all the stakeholders and see how this will benefit them. Images and pictures related to the end result serve as props to ingrain in the brain “IMPORTANCE”. 3) Share your commitments with a set of people. Go public on your intentions. This way, the brain registers this goal as an “IMPORTANT” one and is also aware about the name and fame that will follow, achieving that goal, particularly from those people who knew our decision to pursue that goal/dreams. Many times with good intentions our actions create problems for us. For example, the more we think “This should not happen in my life”. Or when we imagine “If that happens then i will be doomed” These negative commands create a RASy which spots information related to that and highlights such things that we should not be seeing or hearing. Seeing and hearing such information is going to make us weak. Seeing and hearing means not just that those images fell on our retina or on our ear drums, it means that, that information has reached our conscious mind. It can disturb us. Can shake our self confidence. Instead let us think of what should be happening to us. Instead let us focus on what we want to happen. Let us also visualise the benefits of such happenings. Even Though as ordinary human beings, we will still be dragged into the habit of
  • 15.
wishing the “Notto happen”. We must practice to come back to wishing “Should happen”. By practice we can achieve this. Let us not deny ourselves of our rightful joy of life. I can assure you, that if you practice this consciously you will master this paradigm (pattern of thinking). To Summarise: 1) RASy (Reticular Activating System) acts as Filter/Secretary/ Watchman to the brain. 2) Our Conscious awareness is governed by RASy. 3) Spotlight on “IMPORTANT” and blindspot on “JUNK” 4) Benefits and threats are “IMPORTANT” anything which is not important is “JUNK” 5) God sent help by stumbling upon the resources which the RASy scanned the environment far far away and brought to our notice. Those resources pre-existed, but now noticed. 6) Droplet of water on Lotus leaf, peace with yourself 7) RASy and Goal setting. 8) If you do not instruct your secretary on whom to be let in. She will do it as per her opinion on what is important for you. 9) You can not escape RASy. It is there and it will work. You don’t have to escape also, you need to learn to make it work in your favour. 10)Practice Practice Practice and keep Practicing. It is possible. The Law of attraction which is more talked about nowadays and the Self fulfilling Prophecies talked about a few decades ago are all in major portion manifestations of this RASy. So if you can master LAW OF ATTRACTION; SELF FULFILLING PROPHECIES ARE MANIFESTATIONS OF THE FUNCTIONING OF RASy
  • 16.
the art ofsetting up this RASy, then you can benefit from the Law of Attractions and then Self fulfilling prophecies. CONSCIOUSLY PRACTICE AND SET THE FILTER.

GOOD ADVISORS DON’TSELL INVESTMENTS. THEY ONLY HELP Mr. INVESTOR TO FUFIL HIS GOALS BY INVESTING. R.GOPINATH [email protected] Mr Investor, Mr Advisor and Mr Fund Manager the TRIO. The role of a Fund manager and the role of an Advisor of an investment are different. Advisors should therefore play their role properly and not just copy paste the endorsements and the recommendations of the fund manager. The focus of the Fund manager is in maximising returns of the fund so that he can attract more investors and also earn well for the promoters of his company. There is nothing vice about it. It is a genuine aspiration of any business entity. Whereas the focus of an advisor is the dreams and goals of his client. For him this fund is a vehicle and not the destination. How this fund helps his client to fulfil his dreams is his prime criteria for selecting and recommending this fund to the client.
  • 19.
Let us lookat the way the fund manager selects his stocks. To methods of analysis are very popular in the market. 1) Fundamental Analysis and 2) Technical analysis. The approach of Fundamental Analysis: See the order mentioned in pic1 in the previous page. He further analyses the company from two angles 1) Qualitative and 2) Quantitative. See Pic 2 Whereas the advisors selection of a fund or a stock on behalf of his client follows this order: See pic 3
  • 20.
Let me explainhow these two people may end up producing different results: Let me assume here Sensex as a Fund. The Index will be the NAV of the fund. On a quantitative analysis of the Sensex (BSE) the FM sees that the Sensex returned 13% CAGR. in the last 30 years. It is a good performance. Pic 4:
  • 21.
Now look atwhat the Mr. Investor (His investment) would have undergone during these 30 years, follow the blue line graph: Pic: 5 How many investors can handle this volatility on their capital amount? The standard deviation during this period is 32.84. If an advisor has just copy paste in his mind the claims of the Fund manager of a 13% CAGR and tells his clients even if the fund in future looses 2% on this we should still be getting 11% which is much more than any safe investment in this country would have given, what would have happened to the client’s investments?
  • 22.
There is apopular adage in equity investment: Pic: 6 There is one more popular adage in equity investments specially with Mutual Funds: Pic 7
  • 23.
Now let ustest both the above adages from an investors position. The investor name Mr Investor agrees to invest ₹2,00,000 every year for 30 years, SIP also long term also. According to his financial plan his Financial goals are as per his financial plan is as under: When he invests ₹2 lac, based on that day NAV of the fund the number of units are allotted and when he wants to withdraw a specific amount based on the NAV of the fund that day, the number of units are debited and the balance retained in his account, which will get added with the future units he will earn by investing in future. With this requirement it is enough if the overall plan yields 12.26% which he is quite likely to achieve. Look at the following table: Table:1 In this calculation we are expecting an IRR of 12.26%. IRR calculation is post-facto and appears as a linear chart (see pic) but in reality with the volatility in the market and the dates of goals pre- fixed for Mr Investor can he achieve this? YEAR AMOUNT REQUIRED ₹ 2000 25,00,000 2008 30,00,000 2012 30,00,000 2016 40,00,000 2020 60,00,000
  • 25.
Let us see.He stood by his commitment and kept investing 2 lacs even year unmindful of whether the market is up or down. And as per the financial plan he cashed ₹25,00,000 from the fund. For this withdrawal 629.39 units were debited. But with the balance of ₹7,66,202 in his account to reach his future goals from that point the fund should perform to give a yield of 17.02% and the time left is 20 years. (Table:2 Purple mark)
  • 26.
In 2008 heencashed 310.97 units to avail ₹30,00,000 from the fund, after this withdrawal he had a balance of ₹12,86, 685.73 in his account. With this balance and future investments of ₹2lac every year the fund need to perform very well to give a yield o 28.24% in the next 12 years. (Table:2 Blue mark) in 2012 he encashed 154.43 units to avail ₹30,00,000 according to the plan. He is left with ₹4,54,319.59 in his account with this as opening balance and future investment of ₹2lac every year to reach his goal the fund should really really perform well to give a yield of 58.33% in the next 8 years. (Table: 2 Red mark) In fact he may not have any units left in his account after some time. (Table: 3)
  • 27.
You will findhere 30 year is long term (Adage), SIP of ₹200000 (Adage), Did not time the market, kept investing on the due date. The Fund has performed well. But it did not serve the purpose of Mr Investor. So how to advice Mr Investor on investments. (10 steps Process) 1 ) First draw a map of life. (Pic: 8). See that the need for Protection in the form of Life Insurance, Critical Illness, Disability insurance and need to protect the existing assets through other insurance plans including health insurance. 2) Mark all Major junctions that is to say time when huge amount of money required for certain needs like Children Higher education Deposits/donations/capitation fees/ payment seat and so on. Grand auspicious marriage of Daughter (for Son also), Purchase of bigger residence, etc. (Pic:8)
  • 28.
    3) Then classifythe Junctions as Not negotiable junctions, Nice to have junctions. Quantify the money required into 3 categories Money required to fulfil the need at a “Minimum Level” at a “Reasonable Level” and at “Aspirational Level”. Need an Expertfor a Financial Planning In the era of technology, there is so much information available in the market through the internet. Some are very useful and the rest is misleading. So, we need the right guide who can show us the right way to do whatever we want to do. There are so many medicines in the market & we know how to consume it however we need the right doctor who can suggest it. Sometimes we stuck in the situation where we need an expert to advise us. Still, most of the people take the risk and unfortunately, they find themselves in a tinderbox. Financial Planning is a very wide subject and we always need the right advisor to give us the right advice on this subject. Most of the people nowadays are looking for return based investment however they forget to take care of a very important factor and that is Risk For e ample e are always taking our child for the vaccine for a specific period but why do we do that? We are aware of the risk if we do not take care of the child vaccination then there are high chances of diseases in the future. We can see the potential risk, but we ignore it most of the times. In general, most of the people take advice from relatives, friends and inner circle but there is one question that arise Are the qualified for the same If es there is no problem but if no then it s a big matter of worry. Why? Because they see your situation from their point of view & an expert will see the situation the way it is. Many a times, people are afraid of the term 'insurance' but they are not consciously aware, they are dealing with risk management system through a different medium. Yes, there are endless examples which can prove it. For example, fire safety, watchman, bank lockers, etc are such risk management systems only. We never. know when can an unfortunate event take place but precaution is very important. Financial planning is a ver ide subject and to understand it and it s application e need an e pert Risk management is the base of financial planning. We need to start with financial goals where we need to plan our financial expenses for various purposes. Now, the question is whether our need requires a secured amount or an unsecured amount. If that amount is secured and a necessity, then one would risk It must be protected because the future events will occur when the right time comes and it will be associated with the cost. It does not relate to our presence whether we will be alive or not. It will take place and it is sure. Now, most of the people are making the right investment planning with the wrong investment instrument at the wrong time and as a result, they fail miserably. So, what should they do? They have to listen to a Financial Advisor who is guiding them by his knowledge & information, with scientific calculation which surely give the desired result. When the right work is done by an expert, it will lead to the right destination. Many people asked me, why should I include insurance in financial planning? My answer is always the same there is onl one certaint in life and that is death, till we alive, we can generate capital and create wealth through it for future consumption, but the question arises, what if we are not alive What about our basic e penses Ho ill our famil survive Don t see life insurance as hen a person dies then the nominee only will get the money. Life insurance is a risk management tool which can protect you as well as your family with their future financial goals. I conclude with the fact that right investment is always in mixed. It must be in combination of the need but with the

protection. People areafraid of seeing the real picture and it is the duty to guide them throughout time. There are two advisors in Mahabharata, one is lord Krishna and another is mama Shakuni. Rest of the story you kno ver ell That s h the right e pert advisor is crucial to guide ou for financial planning. Are we taking legal advice from relatives who are not lawyer? Are we allowing a doctor who is not surgeon but a friend to conduct surgery? The answer is simply no because they are not qualified for such a job Obviousl e prefer the best paediatrician for the child s health best heart surgeon for a heart-related issue, the best lawyer for legal issues, best Chartered Accountant for accounting management, best planner for wedding, best fashion designer for clothing, then why not a best financial planner for goal-based financial planning & risk management. So, always ask an expert for financial planning with risk management. Aniket Patel LIC Development Officer

[email protected] BHUSHAN LIMAYE www.bhushanlimaye.com OurBirth can be an Event, but our Death has to be a History Between Birth and Death is the Life which we live, which I consider the greatest gift of God. And we have to make this life meaningful and one which others can look up to as being a role model. Life and Death are not in our control but the entire life from the stage of being a high school student till the end it is we who are fully responsible for how we shape it to be. If we hit a nail in the wall, and then remove the nail it leaves a permanent mark on the wall. It is up to us to decide what mark do we want to leave in this world when we leave it with dignity. The way we lead our life should be a motivation and inspiration to our family members, our staff and fellow professionals. As a Financial Advisor I feel we can never compromise on the following 3 qualities or traits 1) HONESTY 2) TRUST and 3) Our BRAND I would like to express my views on the 4 tiers of our life which we need to focus on, so that our life attains great speed. Just like when we drive our car on a highway, to attain good speed and a good fuel mileage, it is important that all the tyres have the correct pressure of air. In the same manner in our life we need to focus on the 4 following aspects.

    1) Physical andMental health 2) Wealth accumulation and Savings habit. 3) Cordial family relations 4) Self esteem 1) HEALTH: PHYSICAL AND MENTAL HEALTH One question which I generally ask my clients in the first meeting is how much time do you devote to your health well being in a day. Generally more than 70% of them reply in a negative way saying that they cannot devote any time towards their health activities because of the hectic schedule. I tell them that at the time of your retirement you will have lot of time at your disposable and since I would be your financial advisor I am sure you will also have a great cash flow arranged as per your requirement. But if you do not have a good health then you would not be in a position to enjoy the free time and the money at your disposable. Hence I request you to start appropriating a fixed time for your health well being. What you eat and what you eat should be given a deep thought. For good health you need to get sound and proper sleep. One also need to take out proper leisure time on a regular basis to do things one enjoys from within. Along with physical health, mental health is also very important and the best way to attain it is early morning meditation. Having good relations with family members including parents and your staff members will also help in having good mental peace.

You need toshow empathy towards the society watchman, the postman who delivers letters, the staff at the petrol pump and such other persons who you are in touch with. 2) WEALTH I am a firm believer that in life you cannot achieve right results by using wrong methods. Earn wealth by using correct methods. You and your family will definitely enjoy such money earned by right means. Right from the time we start earning its important to cultivate the habit of savings. I generally feel one should enjoy the process of savings and it should not be a burden. Generally it seems that happiness comes from money, or rather one can buy happiness. But its not the case, I am a firm believer that happiness comes from the art of building long term relationships. Money is important for happiness but its not the only thing. 3) FAMILY RELATIONS.What the family members expect from us is love, time and respect. So if you observe minutely this does not require money. I have found that families having dinner together and where lot of the family members have cultivated reading habit generally have great relationships. Parents and children can recommend each other great books which can be read. Each family member should feel free to share their mankibaat with each other. In case of any difficulty answers should be first sought from the family members. In building up good family relations we have to work towards building our EQ, I mean our emotional quotient. Its said if one gets angry quite often then his EQ is low.

We need tounderstand our feelings and the feelings of others also. We need to correlate both the feelings in such a way that there is a win win situation of all. 4) SELF ESTEEM. Here I need to know the purpose of my life. I need to know if I as an individual I respect myself. If I do not respect myself then the world is not going to respect me. I will narrate my own experience where I found my self esteem to go up tremendously. In this lock down period I decided, with the support of the Almight, to pay full salary to my staff members inspite of they having no proper work for 3 full months. It was not their fault. This full salary payment helped to increase my self esteem and the confidence level and the morale of the staff members is also high in this difficult period. If we have to attain good vehicle speed and mileage when we drive on a highway what we do is check the air pressure in all the four tiers on a regular basis at a petrol pump. In the same way we have to devote time to check if we are below the required levels in any of the above mentioned 4 aspects related to our life. This has to be done on a regular basis so that any deficiency can be worked upon at the earliest.
