• #3 SUPERVISOR/MICHELLE sleeping in bed, her alarm rings, wearing a blindfold she sits up and yawns (Single click sound buttons for sound effects to play.) (Michelle keeps blindfold on the whole time and stands in place as the backgrounds change and the characters come to her) 1- turns off her alarm 2- bathroom water runs (then she pretends to shower, brushes teeth, brushes hair, clothes on) 3- car starts up- (She pretends to hold the wheel while moving upper body like driving but standing in place) EVERYONE- others in the group are pretending to drive, swerving around her, she gets angry then honks. 4- Hospital sounds- [Michelle pretends she arrives at the hospital, she is walking in place and begins to make rounds, she is checking on the floor managers, her expression is flat and she looks all about business) CHANGE SLIDE
• #4 SUPERVISOR: [drinking her coffee] Please tell me it ’ s Friday, Jess? JENNIFER: It ’ s just Monday Ms. Keister, and it ’ s Jennifer, not Jessica, she ’ s on 12 . .. Anyway, I really need your assistance. The ER is full but I can ’ t risk the safety of our patients by increasing our census, besides our specialty is pediatrics, not geriatrics and psyc.(she points to Caroline who is wearing a restraint) We are already short-staffed, please talk to administration. CAROLINE: Get me out of here! I demand to see my lawyer! SUPERVISOR: Jessie, I mean Jenny, [Jennifer], whatever, can ’ t you just make a decision? I am very busy you know. (Checking out cell phone) JENNIFER: Last week I told the ER that they may NOT add more patient ’ s to our census and you threatened to fire me for not being a team player. I ’ m just not sure what to do. So far, they have already added five patients to the floor and one is missing. SUPERVISOR: WHAT? A patient is missing?! Look, you better find him! You better hope the Board of Nursing doesn ’ t find out about this and you better hope he is safe. Your license is on the line. Where are your priorities? JENNIFER: [Frustrated, Jennifer walks away.] Supervisor walks in place like she is going to the next floor. Her expression is still flat and she is shaking her head pretends to take notes.] CHANGE SLIDE.
• #5 JESSICA: (baby noises in background) SUPERVISOR:[Still with blindfold on] Good morning Kimberly. Heard you have a full house, here? KIMBERLY: Yes, our census is … SUPERVISOR: [Interrupts] Is everyone insured? KIMBERLY: Everyone, but … SUPERVISOR: [Interrupts] Mmmhmm … .. anyone on Medicaid? KIMBERLY: Just that lady … SUPERVISOR: [Interrupts again] Look, you “ bleeding hearts ” gotta learn, no insurance means no extras. Let ’ s get them up and get them out! KIMBERLY: Just a few more hours, please Ms. Keister? The baby hasn ’ t latched on yet and mom has a 2, 3, and 5 year old at home. Did I mention she lives alone? She need a little longer, she ’ s exhausted. VALERIE: [in background holding baby (babies crying), she seems overwhelmed.] SUPERVISOR: What she needs is to call her ride, this pregnancy was her decision and she obviously knows the drill. Please tell me that Dr. Smith tide her tubes this time? KIMBERLY: [shakes head no ’ SUPERVISOR: Oh great! Hunny, pull up your big-girl-britches and if you want to feel sorry for someone, feel sorry for your staff. I need one of them to go to Peds and one to go to the ER. Send fertile Myrtle home and then you will only be one short. By the way, do us all a favor and give her a shot of Depo before she leaves, just tell her its B12 or something. That should hold her off for a few months. [She yawns as she walks in place and the background changes … she says I need more coffee] CHANGE SLIDE
• #6 SUPERVISOR: [Sits in her office with blindfold on. She feels around on her desk and finds a pair of sunglasses.] What are these? [She puts these on and takes off the blindfold.] SAYS: Where have you been all my life? [She questions the sunglasses] It ’ s just so bright! CAROLINE: [Hold up a sign telling audience to put on their sunglasses.] LAUREN: [gowned, appears in front of her] SUPERVISOR: Ahhh … . .you startled me. Excuse me ma ’ am, you must have taken a wrong turn, [shews her away] … ..well, go on, have a nice day now. PATIENT 1/LAUREN: I am not the one who has taken a wrong turn, Ms. Keister, I am the ghost of patients past. SUPERVISOR: OK, now, I ’ ll just be dialing security. [picks up phone, pretends to dial and puts down] Hmm, the lines seem to be down … . Nurse, nurse … .[ She yells to the crowd] PATIENT 1/LAUREN: They cant hear you. I ’ ve been sent to show you the error of your ways. (looking around) He ’ s not talking about me … I actually hate people who only talk about themselves … Are you suggesting that I am like that?. … No way … I ’ m not that self centered, am I? (she looks around but no one is in sight). SUPERVISOR: OK, I am paging security. If you think its funny to put hypnotics in my coffee, I ’ ll have you think again. I ’ ll have their job. (pick up phone) JESSICA: (presses the pager sound effect when Michelle picks up phone before the knock at the door sound effect) JESSICA: CHANGE SLIDE.
• #7 JESSICA: [Make knocking sound] SUPERVISOR: That was fast. [Pretends to open the door that leads to the audience] SAYS: Oh, thank GOD, its you. [Looks out the door, looking at audience] Is everything OK? You don ’ t look so good. I ’ ll get a nurse for you, there were some mix ups and I am sorry you were put on the pediatric floor but really, you need to go lay down, they have been looking for you. [Pretends to listen] JESSICA: Play Whispers SUPERVISOR: What do you mean you passed away? Sir, you are fine, you are right here, besides you only have an abscessed tooth, the antibiotics will help and you will be on your way. [pretend to listen] JESSICA: (play whispers) SUPERVISOR: Your death was caused from the antibiotic? JESSICA: (play whispers) SUPERVISOR: Your daughter ’ s a lawyer? SIR, slow down. I am very confused. I am sure you will be just fine, we couldn ’ t have missed that. I know the floor is short, but we certainly would NOT miss an allergy. JENNIFER: (click once to play thunder, lightening) JESSICA: walk into background close to Michelle SUPERVISOR: (listen to sound, look up) [Looks around, doesn ’ t see anyone] SUPERVISOR: Says: Sir, hello, sir … .What is going on? … [closes the door and backs up into Jessica]. JENNIFER: Change slides.
• #8 MICHELLE: (backs up into Jessica) PATIENT 3/JESSICA: I am the ghost of patient ’ s future. Today is your chance to review your past, take a hard look at the present, and to change your patients ’ future. You have been in the dark a long time, but today you will decide if you should INSPIRE A SHARED VISION or if you will continue RIDING THE LAZY RIVER OF LIFE, waiting for problems to bubble up, putting out one fire after the other, … . Blindfold or glasses Ms. Keister, it ’ s your call? You have the answers. (Jessica off stage) SUPERVISOR: But that responsibility is HUGE, what if I make a mistake or do something wrong? I cant live with myself if I ’ m the one who makes a bad decision. [She begins to take her glasses off and the lights go out- wait a few seconds] JENNIFER: [turns the lights out when she takes glasses off and turn back on when she puts back on] SUPERVISOR: [She puts glasses back on and the lights come on, she looks around the room, she realizes she is sitting alone.] Say: Come back, I don ’ t know what to do. JESSICA: Change slide
• #9 SUPERVISOR: [stands up, talks to self], OK Michelle, pull yourself together, how do I do this? She said the answers are all around me. [Looks at posters of famous people on her wall] SUPERVISOR [Say to posters]: How did you all do it? I don ’ t have super powers or endless money or unbelievable gifts. Its just easier to point the blame, fix things and go. Oh, I don ’ t know what to do … . MICHELLE: Talks to audience about pictures: So, NO ONE has all of the answers? It takes hard work, taking time to build trusting relationships with myself and others, and input from EVERYONE? I never thought it was possible but if the STAFF come to work, then the PATIENTS will get better, the DEPARTMENTS will work together better, the MANAGEMENT will see our efforts, and the COMMUNITY will thrive. It is all so CLEAR. I ’ ve got to tell somebody! SUPERVISOR: Everyone, everyone, come here (she announces down the hall). EVERYONE: (The group members gather around quickly) SUPERVISOR: Today we are going to start doing things different. I am going to change. For now on we communicate, I ’ ll help you problem solve, the patient is our first priority, not the insurance, not the funding source. From rejection to a multi-billion dollar business, this man never gave up, never gave in and never took “you can’t” for an answer. He dropped out of school at age sixteen only to be rejected from joining the Army.
