Introduction
 The Internet of Things (IoT) is a scenario in
which objects, animals or people are provided
with unique identifiers and the ability to
transfer data over a network without requiring
human-to-human or human-to-computer
interaction.
 The term ‘Internet of Things’ from its early
introduction in 1990s by Mark Weiser has
evolved enormously and now it has taken the
centre stage. It goes beyond Machine-to-
Machine Communication and covers many
protocols, domains and applications.
 “THINGS” in IoT can refer to anything and
everything that comes to your mind. Starting
from a heart monitoring implant to farm
animals having biochip transponders,
automobiles with built-in sensors to even a
simple chair having pressure sensors, goods,
objects, machines, appliances, buildings,
vehicles, animals, people, plants, soil and many
more can become the ‘things’ in IoT.
 The things we encounter in our daily lives, the
machines which we encounter at our
workplaces and at home, the buildings we live
in, the cars we travel in, even we will become a
part of IoT.
Introduction
 This is done by providing a unique identity to the things. The current technology of ipv6 is normally used
in doing the same.
 Then sensors are embedded on it to sense things happening around and on it. Technologies like RFID,
Zigbee, Z-wave, NFC, Wi-Fi and several other microelectronics circuits can be used which are getting
smaller and cheaper day by day.
Trends
 Reality search engines: IoT will transform the face of
search engines. There will be reality search engines,
for e.g. you can ask Google to search for your keys if
lost as your keys will be tagged and can be traced via
internet.
 The gaming industry will grow and will have better
opportunities. I see games and play having a huge
potential role in activating and connecting the
physical objects in the world around us, and paving
the way for broader application across the range of
human experiences.
 Agriculture: The field of precision agriculture, a
practice that uses analytics to optimize farming
decisions, is a gold mine of opportunities for IoT
innovation.
 Entertainment, Fitness, Smart watch, Location and
tracking, Light & temperature control, Energy
optimization, Predictive maintenance, Connected
appliances, E-meters, Smart street lights, Pipeline leak
detection, Traffic control, Surveillance cameras,
Centralized and integrated system control, Flow
optimization, Real time inventory, Asset tracking,
Employee safety, Firmware updates, Remote
monitoring, Ambulance telemetry, Drug tracking,
Hospital asset tracking are some of the fields where
IoT is already being used.
Next 5 years…Technocracy
 IoT’s applications and its uses are limited by our
imaginations. It will make social networking sites
look like a minor event. It will transform the face
of marketing and advertising industries.
 Media, Environmental monitoring, Infrastructure
management, Manufacturing, Energy
management, Medical and healthcare systems,
Building and home automation, Transportation,
Large scale deployments are some of the areas
which will grow in next five years.
 The digitization of business and life will revamp
the enterprise vendor pecking order — more like
destroy it — create $1.9 trillion in economic
value add via the Internet of things and lead to a
digital workforce and smart machines that will
replace 1 in 3 knowledge workers.
 The Internet of Things promises to change the
way companies interact with their customers.
New devices connected to the Internet will bring
greater interactivity and a wealth of new data
about customer activity.
 Privacy may become meaningless and it is one of
the biggest concerns on the IoT. 4,000 Exabytes
of information connected to one world wide
web is a concern for privacy. Seeing its positive
aspects, IoT will give many opportunities to the
security software industries.
Interest Areas
 Understanding of the Internet of Things is that it is the services built on top
of the object data that are the important elements: “The information and
services based on these objects need to be perceived and understood by
human users, which necessarily leads to various sort of interfaces...
and augmented reality is one of them.”
 With the wide spectrum of IoT scope, I would like to work on mobile
augmented reality, digitization, security, big data analysis, segmentation
and visualization.
