ABSTRACT
The internship enables the student to harmonize what they learnt in class with reality in
professional ground. As a partial fulfillment for the award of a bachelor’s degree in the
University of Rwanda -College of Business and Economics (CBE), it is very fundamental for
any student in his/her learning period to undertake practical training. It is for this reason; I
conducted internship in DUTERIMBERE IMF-Nyabugogo s/branch, DUTERIMBERE –IMF, is
financial institution with principle objective of promoting women’s entrepreneur by offering
them with financial services. My internship started on 25th
January 2016 and ended on 04th
March, 2016, I had eager to know how this financial institution fulfills its obligation and how it
operates, and I took advantage to perform different tasks. There are the main tasks described in
this report as my performance in a whole internship period I was performed as loan officer
assistant, a cashier under supervision of staffs. They enabled me to acquire skills and knowledge
additional to what I have learnt at CBE. This internship describes how the theories learnt at the
school were put it into practice at the field; this report focuses primarily on activities carried out
during the period of internship such as: opening accounts of new customers, performing different
banking transactions mostly deposit and withdrawing, and how the applicants are given the loan.
I was responsible to record cash deposits in the book of inflows and record cash withdraw in the
book of outflows before being recorded in the system means that I recorded banking transaction
on daily basis, I was responsible for checking loan applications under supervision of loan officer.
This report made up by 7 main parts: (1) Profile of DUTERIMBERE IMF, (2) Job Description,
(3) Learning outcomes, (4) Self Evaluation of internship, (5) Self development plans, (6)
Conclusion, and (7) Recommendations. It also talks about two most tasks I performed during
internship period namely; payment validation and audit of financial reports. The internship
creates foundation of well being to undergraduates because they strengthen their professionalism
throughout transformation of theories from CBE into practical skills as well.

1. PROFILE OF DUTERIMBERE IMF
1.1. Background
Duterimbere IMF is a non-profit organization created in 1987 by 29 women in Rwanda led by
the spirit of promoting equitable socio-economic development. According to them,
The lack of access to financial services for low-income women was an exclusion inhibitor
development for both women and men, Supported by the Women’s World Banking (WWB), a
network of microfinance practitioners worldwide, the founding members have completed the
initial feasibility study of Duterimbere. This activity earned him membership in the WWB from
its inception. Its expertise in microfinance and entrepreneurship has much profited.
It was approved by the Ministerial Decree n ° 1219/05 of 3 November 1987. His texts have been
updated again approved by Ministerial Order n ° 91/11 of 13/09/2005.
- Contribute to the improvement of policies that negatively affect women in the economic, social
and cultural awareness among stakeholders.
In its beginnings, Duterimbere focused on advocacy for women with various partners. Women
have been trained and knowledgeable in various socio-economic fields. They were aware of the
savings, credit and entrepreneurship.
She could not grant itself credit to women. She first placed a guarantee fund in the Union des
Banques Populaires in Rwanda. Women without collateral could access credit with the approval
of the fund. The first direct loans were granted in 1991. Education savings has been a great
success: women have saved a lot of money.
She continued to support women micro entrepreneurs to set up a company specialized in
microfinance. She holds enough shares in the company that give the power to continue to be the
spokesman for low-income women. This branch financial Duterimbere is autonomous and has its
own management bodies. Duterimbere also transferred to the Society his entire savings and
credit program at any Country.
For now, Duterimbere focuses on non-financial activities promotional women’s
entrepreneurship. The organization of women into solidarity groups’ oriented entrepreneurship
particularly caught his attention.
But she also conducts awareness campaigns on entrepreneurship. It organizes training sessions
and information campaigns for women and youth entrepreneurship, behavior pre and post credit,

savings and credit. It organizes senior exchange experiences with local and international study
tours and conferences debates are organized through regional meetings held every six months.
It provides support to women entrepreneurs for the proper management of their activities such as
public utilities, books received, cash books and other management tools according to their needs.
It conducts socio-economic studies related to the promotion of micro-enterprises especially in
rural areas and the economic empowerment of women.
The official launching of DUTERIMBERE - IMF, Ltd was held on March 6, 2004 with the
registered capital of 100 million Rwf of which 95% of the shares are owned by
DUTERIMBERE. The other shareholders, also members of DUTERIMBERE, own 5% of the
shares. DUTERIMBERE-IMF, Ltd was given the final approval from the National Bank of
Rwanda on September 15, 2005.
1.2. Types of credits, DUTERIMBERE-IMF, Ltd offers:
• Solidarity credits: This type of credit is intended for customers without material guarantee. It
finances small businesses as well as agriculture and animal husbandry.
DUTERIMBERE-IMF, LTD favors this type of credit because it allows customers who are
morally credible but without real guarantee access to financial services.
• woman entrepreneur credits: These are loans given mainly to individual women
entrepreneurs whose needs for working capital exceeded the amounts granted to solidarity
groups.
• Advance on salary and unsecured (credit): These are credits given to employees, customers
of DUTERIMBERE-MFI, LTD, whose monthly salaries pass through the counters of the
Company each month for a period of at least three months.
• Warehouse receipt: It is a product of credit estimated to agricultural cooperatives for storable
food crops.
Micro Leasing (Vehicle, Moto cycle and wood machine)
This is a kind of loan whereby DUTERIMBERE-IMF, Ltd buys on behalf of client one of
materials as mentioned above in kind of leasing after showing the prior saving of 20% according
to the desired material. This kind of loan is reimbursed on monthly basis until the last payment
and the lessee is given the full right of owning the material.

Education Credit: This is a credit product reserved for customers for DUTERIMBERE-IMF, Ltd
to resolve problems rather Credits.
1.3. Types of Account you can open in DUTERIMBERE IMF
 Current account
Account opening necessities:
• Client has to be 18 years and above or bring a guardian
• Documentation required:
• 2 passport size photos
• Identification: I.D Card/Passport
1.4. Benefits for opening account in DURERIMBERE IMF
• Apply for loan
• Receive or make transfers: Account to account and interbank
• Get a monthly free account balance statement at any branch of DUTERIMBERE
 Term deposit
Account opening necessities:
• To open this account, you have to first have current account with DUTERIMBERE IMF
• You can open the term deposit at any DUTERIMBERE IMF Branch for that period of
time
• The minimum opening balance is 10,000
 CURUZA account, It is an account any customer are accepted to open because they
have to finance their activities the maximum amount is 20 000 000 rwandan franc the
minimum balance is 300 000 Rwandan franc, condition of that account:
T0 have good reputation within your society (neighbor)
Never have other credit in other financial institution
Must be customer of DUTERIMBERE IMF from two month at least
Customer must have 21 year old and above
Customer must have the material grant which value is great than the credit he/she want

The credit which the customer demand must be equal or great at 75% of the value of material
grant at 15% at year and commission is at 1% of demand credit loan is paid according to the
agreement done between client and DUTERIMBERE but must not be less than 48 month and
above and late penalty is 5% of demand credit
 Advance on salary and unsecured (credit) account
Account opened to resolve the personnel basic need on their salaries which have some term and
condition:
Have good reputation with your neighbor
Never have credit in the other financial institution and microfinancial institution
Customer must present his/her contract of work with repayment period
For credit of 30,000,000 Rwandan franc and above client must present his material grant with the
interest of 15% and commission of 1%, loan must be paid within 3months
 Nyunganira Account
This is the account which is opened for the purpose of reinforce financial capacity of the client
Client must never have other credit in the other micro financial institution and other financial
institution. Be regularly in his/her transaction of his/her account Customer must have his/her
contract of work and his/her remuneration (salaries) must pass in DUTERIMBERE IMF
regularly, interest is 5% monthly commission is1% of credit which must be paid in 3months at
late penalty of 5%.
 HUNIKA ACCOUNT (WARRANT)
This the account which is opened to facilitate the farmer in their activities in production process
60% of the value of stock
Client must present in detail and in financial value all his/her stock
Client must have a good reputation in the society in which he/she live
Grant is his/her stock (production), interest is calculated at 1.5% monthly with commission of
1%, repayable in 6 months at late of 5% of demand credit
 HUMURA MUHINZI account

This account which help the farmer in production process when they are harvesting their crops
the farmer need some facilities in order to gather well their crops from the field so that they need
that kind of credit so the farmer must present 40% of all of his/her harvests
Client must have good reputation among the neighbor (society)
Client must never have have credit in other financial institution.
1.5. Objectives of DUTERIMBERE IMF
• Grant the loans to customers in order to help them meet their financial , economic and
social needs ,those loans are refunded according to the terms of the loans contract that are
also defined by the policy and regulations of loans.
• Present the customers with possibilities of investing their funds according to the
condition determined by the policy and regulations of saving. Bring out all operations
allowed by the commercial bank of Rwanda include monetary utilization (money
transfer).
• Promotion of women’enterpreneur by offering them financial service
• Promote better integration of women in economic development through the creation of a
loan fund to support income-generating activities for women and provide technical
support in developing and managing projects
• Facilitate access to bank loans for women with low income and no bank guarantee; –
• Stimulate entrepreneurship awareness among women about their economic rights,
solidarity and mutual trust
• Improving policies affecting women in socio-economic awareness among stakeholder

Mission of Duterimbere IMF
The mission of DUTERIMBERE-IMF, Ltd is "to provide financial services tailored to low-
income entrepreneurs, primarily women, to help them improve their socio-economic conditions"
This mission is achieved through the following objectives:
• To mobilize and secure savings of the target group under the branches and secure
transport means.
• Facilitate access to credit by providing the target group with services tailored to their
needs.
• Ensure the sustainability of the institution by combining the diversification of financial
resources with the new technology and professionalism.
Vision of Duterimbere IMF
Vision is summarized in phrase “IGICUMBI CYITERAMBERE RYUMUGORE”means that
DUTERIMBERE occupied by collection of credit on their client mainly women for the purpose
of financing their project which generate revenue in return

Shareholders
80 shareholders attend Duterimbere General Assembly Posted on: 9/June/2015
About 80 shareholders of Duterimbere IMF LTD attended a general assembly that was held on
31 May 2015. The assembly assessed achievements and work plan for the year 2015.
The meeting was led by the President the Board of Directors of DUTERIMBERE,
MUKANDOLI Flora who elaborated action plan for 2015.

Among the works expected in the year 2015 include staff capacity building, ensuring good
service delivery, well managing loan portfolio, managing human resources, use of ICT in
banking services especially by utilizing mobile banking, increasing financial capital, etc.
They also talked about the number of customers that has increased to 49 033 by the end of 2014
from 45 113 previous year.
Deposit money increased by 95.5% which allows the institution to lend more clients so as to be
able finance their projects.
The assembly also voted new board members where MUKARUGWIZA Judith elected the first
vice President while ABASA Gario Eric elected on the position of Legal Officer replacing
NGERAGEZE Bernard.
2.7. ORGANIZATIONAL STRUCTURE
• The association has four Duterimbere following organs:
- The General Assembly
- The Board of Directors
- Supervisory Board
- The Executive Secretariat
Decision-making bodies
• General Assembly: is the supreme body of the Company and is composed of all
shareholders.
• Board of Directors consists of seven directors appointed by the General Assembly. It is
the management body of the Company and reports to the General Assembly.
Controlling body
• Time-bargain free Savings (deposit account): The client indicates the amount of money to
be blocked for a specified period of time for the production of interests.
• Prior savings: it is an amount of savings required before any customer gets a loan.

2. JOB DESCRIPTION
2.1. Task 1: Assistant of Loan Officer
2.1.1 Objective of the task
The objective of this task is to provide loans to the applicants, after analyzing each and every
supporting document, prior to grant loan with assurance that the applicant will repay both
principal and interests on monthly basis. An application is assessed in accordance with National
Bank rules and regulations governing credit decision and law governing companies in Rwanda.
2.1.2 My responsibilities as an intern
My core responsibilities as an intern were 1) to assist loan officer to check completeness of
supporting documents, 2) to check whether information provided by applicant is reliable, 3) to
provide necessary information to the loan applicants.
2.1.3 Task description
 Technical details
To perform this requires maximum attention and well skilled in credit decision making, if you
don’t follow loan procedures there is possibility to increase non performing loans/ delay in
repayment. Loan officer be skilled enough in:
1) Active Listening: Giving full attention to what other people are saying, taking time to
understand the points being made, asking questions as appropriate, and not interrupting at
inappropriate times, 2) Time Management: Managing one's own time and the time of others.
3) Reading Comprehension: Understanding written sentences and paragraphs in work
related documents. 4) Persuasion: Persuading others to change their minds or behavior.
5) Speaking: Talking to others to convey information effectively. 6) Social Perceptiveness:
Being aware of others' reactions and understanding why they react as they do. 7)
Coordination: Adjusting actions in relation to others' actions. 8) Service Orientation:
Actively looking for ways to help people. 9) Complex Problem Solving: Identifying
complex problems and reviewing related information to develop and evaluate options and
implement solutions. 10) Active Learning: Understanding the implications of new
information for both current and future problem-solving and decision-making.

 Scientific/professional skills required
Offering of loans to the applicants is not a simple work; it requires awareness and sufficient
professionalism, requires ability to consider long term strategies of the company offering
financial services to the society, It required having sufficient knowledge and skills in related
field from background which will provide the ability to meet requirements or to handle complex
issues wherever they arise. The following are Scientific/professional skills required: integrity, be
honesty, work in ethical manner, having the knowledge of banking in the credit decision making
with grant of loan and terms of credit decision, making loan applicants satisfied while solving his
problem etc. information of loan applicants has to be maintained properly.
 Problems encountered
As an intern I faced problems regarding new area of responsibilities and lack of skills required to
handle complex tasks like evaluation and analysis of loan applications, there was some minor
problems such changing the scope of life style i.e changing from academic life to the work life is
challenged somehow and requires extra time to adapt in new situation.
 Solution/design implemented
Once I realized that I was one who is going to serve with loan officer; I acquired the written rules
and regulations regarding issue of credit/loan in DUTERIMBERE IMF, I acquired briefing and

explanations from my supervisor who was orienting me for all activities carried out by loan
officer.
 New skills/knowledge acquired
While performing this task I gained new skills required for a loan officer to grant the loan falling
under 23 bullets mentioned herewith:1) Approve loans within specified limits, and refer loan
applications outside those limits to management for approval, 2) Meet with applicants to obtain
information for loan applications and to answer questions about the process, 3) Analyze
applicants' financial status, credit, and property evaluations to determine feasibility of granting
loans, 4) Explain to customers the different types of loans and credit options that are available, as
well as the terms of those services, 5) Obtain and compile copies of loan applicants' credit
histories, corporate financial statements, and other financial information, 6) Review and update
credit and loan files. 7) Review loan agreements to ensure that they are complete and accurate
according to policy, 8) Compute payment schedules, 9) Stay abreast of new types of loans and
other financial services and products in order to better meet customers' needs, 10) Submit
applications to credit analysts for verification and recommendation, 11) Handle customer
complaints and take appropriate action to resolve them, 12) Work with clients to identify their
financial goals and to find ways of reaching those goals, 13) Confer with underwriters to aid in
resolving mortgage application problems, 14) Negotiate payment arrangements with customers
who have delinquent loans, 15) Market bank products to individuals and firms, promoting bank
servicesthatmaymeetcustomers'needs,16)Superviseloanpersonnel.
17) Set credit policies, credit lines, procedures and standards in conjunction with senior
managers, 18) Provide special services such as investment banking for clients with more
specialized needs, 19) Analyze potential loan markets and develop referral networks in order to
locate prospects for loans, 20) Prepare reports to send to customers whose accounts are
delinquent, and forward irreconcilable accounts for collector action, 21) Arrange for
maintenance and liquidation of delinquent properties, 22) Interview, hire, and train new
employees, 23) Petition courts to transfer titles and deeds of collateral to banks.

 Supervisor: Loan Officer
 Responsibilities of loan officer
The loan officer of DUTERIMBERE IMF-Nyabugogo branch is bachelor’s degree holder with
the following responsibilities:
1) Making Decisions and Solving Problems: Analyzing information and evaluating results to
choose the best solution and solve problems, 2) Processing Information: Compiling, coding,
categorizing, calculating, tabulating, auditing, or verifying information or data, 3) Analyzing
Data or Information: Identifying the underlying principles, reasons, or facts of information by
breaking down information or data into separate parts, 4) Performing for or Working Directly
with the Public: Performing for people or dealing directly with the public. This includes serving
customers in restaurants and stores, and receiving clients or guests, 5) Getting Information:
Observing, receiving, and otherwise obtaining information from all relevant sources, 6)
Establishing and Maintaining Interpersonal Relationships: Developing constructive and
cooperative working relationships with others, and maintaining them over time.
 Co-workers
My co-workers in the task were two cashiers who hold bachelor’s degree in business
administration. Together with loan officer and branch manager; all staffs of DUTERIMBERE
IMF helped me to adapt in the working environment. So by now I am able to make decision by
whether, any loan applicant fulfills all requirements to be based on while granting a loan.
 External inputs
First and foremost there were loan applicants who are at the time customers of DUTERIMBERE
IMF especially Nyabugogo s/branch, written recommendations and terms of granting loan to the
applicant, there was also numerous of central bank rules and regulations governing loans and
how interest is calculated with principal amount of loan.
2.2. Task 2: Cashier/Teller

Definition: A cashier (a bank teller) is any person, who deals with cash transactions in
different financial institutions.
2.2.1. Objective of the task
The main objectives are to provide with relevance a qualitative and quantitative service to
customers by: communicating to them, accepting and recording their deposits, to give client
their money (withdrawals), and handling all problems relating to cash on customers’

Refer to its meaning; a bank teller provides professional service to the clients, it is includes
but not limited to: Performing accurate transactions, greeting the client, smiling, using the
client's name during the transaction, and thanking each client for his or her business. Refer
clients to other branch personnel as needed. Look for opportunities to refer products and
services to clients in order to enhance relationships. To perform the basic transactions of
paying and receiving cash to and from customers.

2.2.3. Task description
This position of cashier is one whereby a cashier is closer to the clients and where they
interact face to face. When customers arrive at DUTERIMBERE IMF-Nyabugogo s/branch,
they first meet a cashier to whom they immediately expose their needs. Therefore, the job of
cashier includes many things and it is a job of accuracy, and honesty because it is only the
way customers react on level of service delivery in all businesses across the world.
 Technical details
A cashier should be a punctual person, smart, and brilliant. He/she should be a person who
carefully listen to customers and skillfully give satisfactory answers to their problems.
Cashiers deal with solving cash related problems. The daily transactions are assessed,
processed and recorded by employee known as cashier or teller, and then at the end of the
day, cashiers prepare a closing report showing all those transactions by filling the book of
journal entries. To be able to analyze the balance before processing an operation is important
to the cashier who is competent to his/her work.
 Scientific/Professional skills required
To be perfect in computer skills especially word, excel, and typing rapidly; this is core
competency that contribute to quick service delivery.
Communication skills: this permits a cashier to perform his/her task without language
barriers or lack of relationship with others.

Having Accounting Skills: this provides cashier with ability to close at the end of the day
and making sure that there have been right accounts to be credited and debited known as
journal entries.
To have rational behavior such as honesty, sincerity and etc… is of great importance
Mathematical and statistical skills: this helps a cashier not to make counting errors. Any
mistake can cause loss of two important things; (a) Loss of money when a client is given
much money than it should be, and (b) Loss of reputation when a client is given less money
than his/her expectations.
Problem resolution: here he/she deserves to know human behavior and how to manage
difficult persons. This will help a cashier to deal with customer’s problems without breaking
their heart or
Sociological skills: this helps a cashier to be with appositive team spirit and team work.
Customer service skills: these skills provide with employee ability to serve customers a
qualitative service.
 Problems encountered and approach taken to solve them
There were problems which should have: to hinder me perform my task accordingly, the
major problems are summarized as under:
To meet new people in the team: At the beginning of this internship the first challenge I
had, was to know the new team. To know team member’s behavior, their working
environment, working condition, and how to manage each team member’s behavior.
Therefore, it was not easy to know how to interact with some team members.
Speed in processing transactions: On this position, everything you do needs to be
performed with maximum speed in order to serve many customers in every possible shortest
time, this makes a cashier distinguished from others once he/she serves big number of
customers on daily basis, in other words the customers do not like delaying in being

delivered by services they have acquired. So after realizing that this is a case I used to
identify the likely solutions to the problems which should hinder me to accomplish my task
in efficient manner.
Speed in counting money: When you are supplying or receiving money, you count the
number of papers. For example you don’t say 5,000 thousand Rwandan francs, but you say
one paper of five thousand, then, you multiply the number of papers with one paper’s value.
Consequently, sometimes you get confused, and any mistake can cause a loss if you don’t
take care of transactions you are processing.
 Solution/design to deal with the problem
I realized these problems stated above prior to start an internship because I provided with
training before performing any task; my supervisor was there to give me guidelines that
helped me to overcome these challenges; all solved friendly by my supervisor and co-
workers, I read the manuals which contained procedure to be followed while processing any
transactions throughout client’s account.
 New skills acquired
Processing transactions: Those transactions include savings, withdrawals, authorizing
current accounts, and to process transactions using finger print system throughout customers
accounts.
I took advantage of mixing both theories from CBE with practices from DUTERIMBERE
IMF Nyabugogo s/branch, therefore I learnt how I can create popularity among other people,
discovered that theories I learnt contribute to the field of work.
In detail I gained the following as results of serving as cashier: 1) Establishing and Maintaining

assigned to train new workers and those who are in internship like I was.

The external inputs to the task were first of all customers who were coming to request
financial services, there were also rules and regulations set by central bank (BNR) to govern
all financial institutions dealing with business of money.

3. LEARNING OUTCOMES
3.1. My first day on internship
o context
The first day on my internship was the day that I will never forget in my life. And this is because
of the experience I acquired which enables me to learn more about the working environment
instructed us how we should behave during of our internship period. My first day was strange but
full of fun because I was so serious to know everything that was taking place and how it was
being done. The task, place, colleagues and customers were all new to me. My supervisor told
me how to behave and to be confidential. I was oriented very well because I had to start working
the next day.
o My role
Undergraduate admitted by certain organization, has to follow rules and regulations regarding
such organization and recognizing that; every staff at the first days will evaluate his/her ability to
perform certain task. Myself I was considered as a new comer in the organization, I had to first
introduce myself to fellow workmates which I did without any problem. I performed my
responsibilities as my first time and as I was trained by my internal supervisor and any other staff
depending on task to be performed.
o Actions taken
On my first day of internship; I had to use my knowledge and skills to show that I am able to do
everything lying under my specialization (accounting), every staff was asking me courses I
covered in CBE, I preferred to acquire explanation from every staff regardless his/her position
held as possibilities to convince them that I was able to do everything well and often. I also tried
to read supporting documents such as user guide manuals etc.
o Performance
My colleagues helped me to cope well with all challenges at work and they were always there for
me whenever I was in need of any form of assistance. The working environment was so
conducive and exciting; I completely conformed to the requirements and standard of dressing
code.

o Guidance
To adapt in new area of knowledge and skills is not an easy game, It took me to the seeking of
assistance and guidance from fellow workmates but most especially my supervisor on how
certain tasks could be done for example when it came to formulation of payments and
transactional records. Therefore it was a blessing having people with warm hearts around me. I
read different books and journals talking on how financial institutions operate.
o Improvement
I started to apply theoretical knowledge gained at University and socializing with the employees
of the outlet and to learn how I can manage work process in order to enhance improve my level
of understanding and cooperation with other employees of DUTERIMBERE IMF especially
Nyabugogo s/branch. For this fist day; I improved my level of communication skills simply by
expressing myself to the branch manager and so other staffs, and receiving instructions from my
supervisors.
o Gain/Learn
I learn the true meaning and importance of the orientation exercise because it simplifies a work
whenever I was expecting to be bothered with new environment. Socializing and making friends
made me feel appreciated and created so much confidence in me because I felt needed. I got new
skills but what are so paramount to me are new friends I got from the field of work. I revealed
how junior and senior employees exchanging information regarding their work. Moreover; I
Enhanced the understanding of both individual and group behavior in the organization,
Appreciate the changing perspectives of leadership and organization behavior to make a
difference in organization, Connect effective leadership and organizational behavior to
effectively influence performance in organizations
3.3. Having to deal with a difficult person or situation
 Context
Difficult situation draw closer to some customers who came to make withdrawals and deposits in
DUTERIMBERE IMF Nyabugogo s/branch, they didn’t comply with the IMF rules and
regulation regarding steps to serve customers, such kind of customers appears in all institutions

being public or private like DUTERIMBERE IMF. These clients tended to be served before
other came first and policy says that whenever you come first you have to be served first and
vice versa.
 Role
My role as an intern was only to respect rules and regulation as provided by DUTERIMBERE
IMF written policies and law regarding companies in Rwanda, at the same time to make such
kind of client patient. I was required to report an extraordinary issue to my supervisor as much as
possible for resolving it.
 Actions taken
I decided to be careful, before attempting to convince clients that they are going to be served at
shortest possible time, I acquired explanations and guidance from my supervisor so that I could
be able to comply with standards set by DUTERIMBERE IMF-Nyabugogo s/branch. I
introduced strategies to have so much contact with all staffs to avoid mistakes and protect image
of the organization and its reputation as well.
 Performance
The performance was not critical because the supervisor didn’t warn me for reversing the ethical
behavior or performance required per the standards set by DUTERIMBERE IMF, the intern is
neither an employee nor customer of certain organization so, the performance can be measured
to the high level because my objective was to improve my professionalism. Surely; I achieved
my objectives because I adapted in such situation.
 Guidance
The guidelines that helped me to perform this task were supervisor who gave me training before
performing any task, discipline of respecting everybody and commitment to work with others.
Reading banking user guidelines, different documentations relating to the financial service
matters. There were also co-workers who supported me to capture new things from
DUTERIMBERE IMF-Nyabugogo s/branch.

 Improvement
As an undergraduate specializing in accounting at College of Business and Economics; I learnt
many things in class this led the CBE to send us in outside organizations to conduct an
internship, I improved my knowledge and skills from theoretical and practical studies, perhaps I
can solve problems of financial institution’s clients who may seek my help either loan or and any
other service provided by DUTERIMBERE IMF or another financial institution operating in
Rwanda.
 Gain/Learn
I gained how every employee consider his/her role in DUTERIMBERE IMF Nyabugogo
s/branch because they thing that customers are to be treated with maximum care, which means
customer royalty, I gained sufficient explanations to what they do to satisfy customer needs and
wants, by either way it is not contrasted from what we saw in class but was only theory that
considered as driving force to DUTERIMBERE IMF’s success to every individual. To be
productive and responsible are words that discussed in consulting meetings.
4.3. My best day on internship
o Context
Once I was informed that I am one who is going to join loan officer I get surprised and staring to
think on next step. In DUTERIMBERE IMF Nyabugogo s/branche; all days were very
interesting to me because as long as I continue to work within entity, but especially to work as an
assistant loan officer was very interested where when I was dealing with loan applicants
documents to assess whether they were fulfilled all requirement, I was supported by written
policies by checking list of required supporting documents to grant loan.
o The role
My role as an intern was to assist loan officer to fulfill obligations throughout checking on check
list every and each document required, I advised to check document per document ticking
available document, in case there was unfulfilled loan application; I placed it onside to inform
the applicant requesting him/her to bring missing documents, and reporting to the loan officer for
crating essence on issuing of loan to the applicants.
o Action taken:

After receiving instructions saying that I am going to join loan officer; I immediately acquired
relating information from cashier who told me that to issue credit is like to make withdraw and
deposit transactions throughout customers’ accounts. Whereas; I asked my supervisor on task to
explain again on what to do because I was on preliminary stage to collect all applications with
sufficient supporting documents.
o Performance
My performance was sincerely not critical as I improved my skills and knowledge in credit
decision, only I succeeded to match theories from CBE with practices on field while checking
the completeness of loan applications. I assisted my supervisor to practice the following:
1) Approve loans within specified limits, and refer loan applications outside those limits to
management for approval. 2) Meet with applicants to obtain information for loan applications
and to answer questions about the process. 3) Analyze applicants' financial status, credit, and
property evaluations to determine feasibility of granting loans. 4) Explain to customers the
different types of loans and credit options that are available, as well as the terms of those
services. 5) Obtain and compile copies of loan applicants' credit histories, corporate financial
statements, and other financial information. 6) Review and update credit and loan files.
7) Review loan agreements to ensure that they are complete and accurate according to policy. 8)
Compute payment schedules. 9) Stay abreast of new types of loans and other financial services
and products in order to better meet customers' needs. 10) Submit applications to credit analysts
for verification and recommendation. 11) Handle customer complaints and take appropriate
action to resolve them. 12) Work with clients to identify their financial goals and to find ways of
reaching those goals. 13) Confer with underwriters to aid in resolving mortgage application
problems. 14) Negotiate payment arrangements with customers who have delinquent loans.

I gained much knowledge in working as teller and Assistant of loan officer, where I knew to use
software and how can we found network, and I learned how the currencies are exchanged.
I acquired professional skills which made me confident to accomplish any bank-related tasks
efficiently and effectively at any working environment. What I have learnt from
DUTERIMBERE IMF is crucial important and will impact my future performance because I
served as a banker who offers financial services to the community. I am able to create bank
account, to offer credit by assessing if the following 5 C’s are fulfilled:
(i) Capacity to repay: is the most critical of the five factors, it is the primary source of repayment
cash. The prospective lender wants to know exactly how applicant will intend to repay the loan.
The lender considers the cash flow from the business, the timing of the repayment, and the
probability of successful repayment of the loan. Payment history on existing credit relationships
personal or commercial is considered an indicator of future payment performance. Potential
lenders also want to know about other possible sources of repayment.
(ii) Capital: is the money loan applicant personally has invested in the business and is an
indication of how much he/she has at risk should the business fail. Interested lenders and
investors may expect applicant to have contributed from his/her own assets and to have
undertaken personal financial risk to establish the business before asking them to commit any
funding.
(iii) Collateral, or guarantees, are additional forms of security a loan applicant can provide the
lender. Giving a lender collateral means that he/she pledges an asset he/she owns, such as his/her
home, to the lender with the agreement that it will be the repayment source in case he/she can't
repay the loan. A guarantee, on the other hand, is just that someone else signs a guarantee

document promising to repay the loan if he/she can't. Some lenders may require such a guarantee
in addition to collateral as security for a loan.
(iv) Conditions: describe the intended purpose of the loan. Will the money be used for working
capital, additional equipment or inventory? The lender may also consider local economic
conditions and the overall climate, both within his/her industry and in other industries that could
affect your business.
(v) Character: is the general impression the applicant makes on the prospective lender or investor. The
lender will form a subjective opinion as to whether or not he/she is sufficiently trustworthy to repay the
loan or generate a return on funds invested in his/her company. His/her educational background and
experience in business and in his/her industry is to be considered. The quality of his/her references and
the background and experience levels of his/her employees are also to be reviewed (MBDA).

4. SELF EVALUATION OF THE INTERNSHIP
4.1 Expectation of Internship Position
Before applying for internship in DUTERIMBERE IMF Nyabugogo branch, I based on my
interest of specialization (accounting) and considered operations carried out by financial
institutions: Firstly, I expected both negative and positive things. I was scared that follow
workers would undermine me but they did not do that. Secondly, I expected to at least visit all
divisions in the period of six weeks but later realized that it was impossible. I expected to meet
some the software we had learnt from school but I did not.
The internship equipped me with new skills, knowledge and experience in a more practical
concept to complement the theoretical knowledge acquired from school.
Expectation of my internship
On my internship, Really, I had intended to perform my industrial training in Duterimbere IMF,
because I want to know how the theories learnt in class during are used in work place.
My expectations were to get more skills how to withdraw and deposit the client’s money on their
accounts, how to check historical transactions of an account. How to manage the conflict and
how to receive customers with care. Know how to use their electronic system, learn how to
verify documents of loan applicants, learn how to socialize with new people, Put in practice what
I studied in class.
Those are other expectations:
The internee expected the placement to enable him to test the life outside class, from being a
student to a person who is employed.
The internee went for internship expecting how things are done in the practical world compared
to the theory he learnt in class and also gain practical knowledge that will prepare for me future
jobs.
4.2 The ways the expectations have been met
Intern was integrated in working environment which the bank staffs as big different from other
working environment, the intern has ever experienced understood the duties performed by the
bank staffs.

My Expectations had been met with my effort offered in following different instructions by
supervisor and co-workers, I made research myself through reading various books and web sites
relevant to work performed and asking some questions in different divisions where I worked.
o My expectation was met when I got an opportunity to join DUTERIMBERE IMF as an
intern and work together in that way we use their software to record different transactions
in a system as the part of the theory learnt in class.
o The College of Business and Economics’ (CBE) c were courses completely relevant to
the task I performed in my internship like in recording the transaction and check loan
applicant documents where the internee with guidance of supervisor use the theory learnt
in financial management by seeing how those loans are amortized and which are part of
lesson offered in CBE program. Also, by recording the different transaction, the internee
has used the different theories learnt in class especially in principal of marketing and in
financial management.
o My expectations were met to the level for example as student specializing in accounting;
I expected to be well trained to fully exploit my skills and ability in this internship period.
I acquired new skills that will enable me to work in any company in the future if
wherever I given the job.
o I also gained experience on how to handle customers who have came for their complaints
and meeting their needs since I was checking the completeness of loan applicants and
making withdrawals and deposits through clients’ accounts.
4.3 The way in which the work undertaken was relevant to what was studying at CBE
Tasks and activities I performed during the internship period were directly related to what I
learnt at college of business and economics (CBE), for example loan amortization by calculating
the interests, principle amount to be paid in each instrument, how to withdraw and deposit on
clients’ accounts, Preparing and producing well organized monthly financial statements on time,
How to check the balance of any account; transferring money from one bank account to other
account. As an undergraduate specializing in accounting; I learnt how to make evaluation on the
projects of the clients who was requesting loans, how to record the transaction, how to write
daily receipts and deposits in accordance with payment slips. Some of the tasks undertaken in
DUTERIMBERE IMF-Nyabugogo s/branch are relevant to what is academically studied at CBE

for example loan evaluation that was specially taught in financial management, and most of
accounting courses such as Financial reporting, advanced financial reporting, Financial reporting
standards and, so many more.
4.4 New skills acquired during the internship period.
As an undergraduate specializing in accounting; I learnt how to make evaluation on the projects
of the clients who was requesting loans, how to record the transaction, how to write daily
receipts and deposits in accordance with payment slips. Some of the tasks undertaken in
DUTERIMBERE IMF are relevant to what is academically studied at CBE for example; loan
evaluation that is specially taught in financial management, and most of accounting courses such
as Financial reporting, advanced financial reporting, Financial reporting standards and, so many
more as I mentioned above. I also gained the following:
 Ethical behavior in the work area
 Know how to handle customers with different attitude and behaviors
 Working spirit
 Creating good relationship between customers and the company especially banking industry.
 Know how to maintain customers satisfaction and retention
 To know how to protect the company’s image and reputation among customers and
competitors
 Inter-corporation of banks locally and internationally.
4.5. Rating overall performance
I have tried to perform all duties efficiently and effectively; to avoid any bad repetition that could
occur and lead to wastage of time but I didn’t practice more about what I have learnt in theory
where I expected to practice it during internship. The attendance of all working days and time
requirement were fully met. My performance therefore is rated at 96%.
4.6The way in which internee has changed as a result of internship experience
Below are some of changes that a trainee met as a result of his internship practices:
Punctuality: in DUTERIMBERE IMF Nyabugogo s/branch this is the most important and
emphasized thing which help in fulfilling their goals and objectives.

Time management: as a result of an internship a trainee learnt how to perform different
responsibilities in short time.
Confidence: a trainee got used with the external environment of school and a trainee has to be
confident especially on work field.
Socializing: The help and assistance rendered to intern by supervisors and other colleagues the
power of friendship.
Those are other ways that I benefit from the industrial training that I have come up different
skills in different ways:
 In class I have learnt different theories but in internship I used critical thinking from theory
learnt in class and doing practically this will be helpful in work environment. So it was
helpful and more benefited to combine together theories learnt and doing it practically which
are a result of industrial training.
 The internee also learnt that proper handling of the suppliers on what they are dealing with
the institute is also a key to success.
 Without doubt, this training will enrich my C.V and helped me a lot to interact with different
staff for that I have an insight on how outline my career towards any finance manager job,
and other related field in future.
 As a student, the internee was not sure if he is ready for employment in any organization or a
particular institution, but that has since changed after his placement in Duterimbere IMF he
believes that he is ready without any doubt employment material.
 I got a chance of interact with people of different countries which can’t occur without
industrial training. For this intern made a friendship and shape ideas.

5. SELF DEVELOPMENT PLAN
Self-development plan refers to a process whereby one takes a primary responsibility for his or
her learning and the means to achieve it. As an undergraduate specializing in accounting,
intending to strengthen my future career as a professional accountant, I plan to achieve this in the
ways as shown here below:
Through different trainings and office programs of the institution related to professional
development programs both inside and outside of a country.
Creating a strong relationship with other professionals, these professionals will help me by
providing professional advice.
I am in need of continuing studies after the completion of BBA program because companies
need highly skilled labor as the critical factor for competitiveness. I am planning to do CPA
courses. I am planning to continue studies in MBA together with ACCA programs in order to
acquire the more skills and meet the employer demand at the market.
My plans are summarized as follow:
o Professional lecturer in accounting studies.
o Professional auditor and consultant.
o Professional accountant and financial controller.
About; real life; I am planning to the owner of consulting firm which will be providing
accounting and non accounting services to the Rwandan society, after my graduation.

6. CONCLUSION
Internship provides a great deal, major advantages to the student or interns in general. It reveals
the student he/her real standard concerning his /her skills and competence on the intellectuals
‘scene. According to considerable tasks that I carried out DUTERIMBERE IMF-Nyabugogo
s/branch, the experience I got, has contributed a lot to the adjustment of theoretical knowledge
accumulated all along my academic studies. It is also important to remind that the internship
reveals to the students various challenges and realities of the professional work in which he/she
will enter in coming days. Therefore, as future managers, they know how to plan for future
functioning of the organizations.
Internship is one of more university courses scheduled in academic programs, to be undertaken
by final year undergraduate students, ending their academic studies. It is a practical course
intended to equip the students acquainted with practical knowledge and improving their skills in
their respective field of study. The training is set to prepare the final year students to have the
global picture of how practical work is done from the view point of the field. This training is a
vital importance in accordance with real and professional applications of the managerial
principles techniques. It addresses to the concerned student the way theories studied in
classrooms are feasibly applied on the field, and hence offering him a conclusive orientation on
how things are practicable on the field thus, preparing for future employment.
Internship leads to improvement of student qualifications such as communication skills, report
writing, organization at work, information required to do a work and ability to be independently.
Internship gives the opportunity to students to obtain a job referring to experience gained from
the company. This internship has more importance for all interns because They have learnt to
function in a different work culture, They have acquired new knowledge and skills which will
help them in the future plans, accounting students; became able to gain experience in accounting
field practices, They have learnt the manner to work with different team members in different
work places. Intern would like to encourage other fellow students to search internship
opportunities in sound organizations/institutions, where they can gain knowledge as they wish.
Personally; internship period left me with sufficient knowledge and skills required to be
competent future employee or employer.

7. RECOMMENDATIONS
7.1 Recommendations to the College of Business and Economics
The following recommendations addressed to the college of Business and Economics for
consideration:
o CBE should help students to find organizations able to help them during their internship
related to their specialization on time because it is very difficult to some students to find
themselves an internship and even if they find it on its behalf, some of them do not have
chance to do what they are specialized because of this reason.
o CBE should change internship period for example from two months to one year as in
developed countries it is, so that internees should have access to different activities in the
organization.
o CBE should also visit the internee where he or she is doing internship not only one time but
more times, so that it can be sure that their students are doing well what they supposed to do
and give them some advices on how to work and behave with their co-workers, this
motivate them and help them to feel confidence and consciously doing their work.
o CBE should give sufficient allowance to the student in order to motivate them to do the
internship effectively. Because the internship fees(allowances) are still insufficient as well
as the life become more expensive
o CBE should create strong academic supervisor so that a student becomes more serious when
he/she is at the place of work.
o CBE (career center office) should make sure it obtain full information about the
organization on the activities they perform before making recommendation for students
to go there for internship training.
o CBE should use more than one language (including French) in its teaching program so
that the internees are not challenged by the language constraints.
o CBE should try by all means in maintaining good relationship with companies so that
they can provide or offer more internship opportunities for the internees to be able to
carry their internships to improve their knowledge.
o CBE should frequently visit students while doing their internship to motivate and
evaluate their performance.

7.2 Recommendations to DUTERIMBERE IMF
To increase the quality of service, DUTERIMBERE IMF should;
o There should be publication of financial reports on its website for encouraging new
clients.
o There should be increase of staffs in Nyabugogo s/branch.
o There should be continuous campaign to attract new clients
o There should be tours in higher learning institutions tends to show image of
DUTERIMBERE IMF because there is a large number of people who do not have
enough information concerning DUTERIMBERE IMF.
