Intertextuality refers to when a media text references another media text to add deeper meaning. In music videos, intertextuality is commonly used to add cinematic elements by including scenes from movies. For example, the "Love Me Like You Do" music video included scenes from Fifty Shades of Grey. The Red Hot Chili Peppers music video for "Californication" implemented a video game style that was popular among younger audiences at the time to promote the song, gaining over 200 million views on YouTube and increasing their popularity. Other bands later used similar intertextuality, such as Linkin Park referencing video games in their "Breaking the Habit" music video.
