The International Social Survey Programme
(ISSP)
Since 1985. Today more than 9000
publications (excluding single country)
We use the items from the ISSP
questionnaires

4. The importance of the Greek
section of ISSP
The social data collected in this project is useful
for the academic community, policy makers and
the whole Greek society.
Study citizens' perceptions on very important
social issues covered by the ISSP surveys.
Participation in ISSP offers international
recognition and significant prestige to the School
and to the entire university.
Data are used at all levels (under/post graduate
studies and PhDs)

6. What we have accomplished
(methods)
New Data Collection Methods
Reactive (surveys with text messages)
Nonreactive (Social media and Web
Scrapping
Data cleaning methods for
pilot surveys (for detecting issues in
questionnaires) and
main survey data (for uncovering
inattentive respondents)
6
8. Is it possible to conduct a national
survey with SMS recruitment?
How can we recruit a representative sample with text
messages?
What about people without Internet access?
What are the best practices to conduct a general survey when
we use text messages for recruitment?
8
9. A method similar to RDD for mobile
phone numbers
As far as the recruitment approach is concerned, it is very
easy to generate probability-based samples of mobile phone
numbers through random-digit-dial (RDD) procedures.
All mobile phone numbers in Greece start with 69 followed
by one of [0,3:5,7:9] and seven other digits.
Most of the countries in the world follow a similar pattern,
but there are some exceptions: e.g. in USA, mobile phone
numbers are region-based (the first 3 digits correspond to
the area code)
After RDD the numbers are validated through HLR lookups

10. Pre-notification, Invitation and
Reminders
The pre-notification informs the randomly selected mobile
phone owners that they would soon receive an invitation to a
survey organized by Aristotle University ofThessaloniki
(AUTH) and a telephone number at AUTH they could call in
case they had questions (builds trust with sample members)
The invitation and reminders include a short text and a very
short personalized link (epolls.eu/XXXX) that the sample
members can directly tap on their device (if these are
smartphones) or easily type it into a browser of another
device to go to the mobile-friendly web survey

12. Methods for pilot surveys
Focusing on item non-response rates
A spike in non-responses for a particular
item is a flag for potential problems (e.g.
participants’ confusion, privacy concerns,
or technical glitches).
Combining item non-response rates with
participant feedback can provide insightful
information
12
13. For main surveys
The R package “Survey Data Quality” is being developed at:
https://github.com/andreadis-ioannis/SurveyDataQuality
In addition to the data quality functions, the R package
contains a data file with responses to the ISSP 2020
questionnaire which is used as an example in the help
files of the package
13
14. Description of the package
A series of R functions that can be used to assess the quality
of survey data
Why do we need them?
Even the most motivated respondents may get tired or lose
their interest and motivation and they may respond less
carefully to the questions of a self-administered survey (i.e.,
with minimal cognitive effort).
Other respondents may not be interested in providing their best
response. Instead, their motivation may be to complete the
survey as quickly as possible (e.g., when they are after rewards/
incentives)
14
15. Based on the survey methodology
literature
Survey methodology scholars have used many methods to
measure response quality.
Based on the theory of satisficing we use a series of indicators
of lower quality responses to estimate the level of
engagement of survey participants in answering the
questionnaires:
Item-nonresponse
Mid-point responses
Straight-lining
Speeding
15
16. What we have accomplished
(impact)
Participation in more than 10
international conferences and meetings
all over the world with more than 20
presentations
Greece is constantly running all pilot
studies for the new ISSP questionnaires
Recognizing the importance of the new
methods of data collection and data
cleaning, Greece was voted as a member
of the Methodology Committee of ISSP
16
17. Next steps
Presentations in this conference
Comparative analyses as data from other
countries become available from ISSP
Dissemination to the public and policy
makers (with the support of Greek
media)
Preparing the pilot study for ISSP 2026
(Role of Government)
Securing funds for the next Greek ISSP
studies
17
18. Obstacles for ISSP in Greece
In most other countries, ISSP data
collection is secured by national funds.
In Greece, there are many obstacles.
In most calls (e.g. Trust your Stars), social
science proposals must compete with all
other fields, and they get lower scores
on the criterion of “practical
implications”
HFRI has a peculiar rule that does not
allow Principal Investigators of
successful proposal to participate in the
next cycle
