IPDC Personal Effectiveness Model
(A Basis for Discussion and Learning Points)
The Discussion Framework
Why improve personal effectiveness?
“No matter what role you have to do, how well you do
it depends on a combination of technical or
professional competence with personal skills and
effectiveness. Many organizations are willing to invest
in helping their people develop their technical and
professional skills which is great. However, they are
more reluctant to do the same in these “softer” skill
areas, because it is harder to measure the
improvements in any quantifiable way. This is
understandable, yet the way most people will do their
jobs differently or better is through better personal
effectiveness.”
Joseph L. Badaracco is the John Shad Professor of
Business Ethics at Harvard Business School.

Stage 2
Knowing what is right to do
Stage 1
The Ability to Minimize Noise
Knowing what is right to do is just half the equation. It is useless to
know what you are supposed to do if you don’t actually do them. To
actually do what is right, you need to overcome distractions to do
otherwise. All distractions can actually be summarized into one:
short-term pleasures. So, the action you need to take is ignoring
short-term pleasures. Since the things you are supposed to do are
often uncomfortable, only by being able to ignore short-term
pleasures can you actually do them.
How do you know what is right to do? This is where the
idea in The Single Most Important Ingredient of
Effectiveness comes into play: to know what is right to
do, you need clarity. It is clarity that allows you to figure
out what is truly important to you. The biggest enemy of
clarity is noise, so the action you need to take is
minimizing noise.

Program Overview & Agenda
Program Overview
What is personal effectiveness? It can't just be achieving our goals because
we could do so in a very wasteful, time consuming or sloppy way. How about
making best use of our time and all other personal resources at our
disposal? This means achieving our goals efficiently, like investment, getting
the best possible return. As both work activities and organizational
structures change rapidly, the need for each of us to work at the peak of our
effectiveness has increased.
This two-day Achieving Personal Effectiveness course will help you
understand your own personal working styles and how it impacts on others.
Look at ways to improve your professional and personal potential by making
positive changes and developing and managing yourself better.
This Personal Effectiveness training course is also designed for those who
seek to further develop the key skills and techniques needed to build
personal impact, influence and effectiveness in dealings with other.
