This document discusses using supply chain transparency to tackle sustainability challenges. It notes rising global consumption is driving widespread environmental impacts. However, there is also cause for hope with unprecedented commitments to more sustainable supply chains from many countries, companies, and organizations. Current capabilities may still be insufficient to provide the transparency needed. The Trase platform aims to map forest-risk commodity supply chains, link actors to sustainability issues in production landscapes, and monitor progress through open-access online information. The goal is for Trase to become the leading supply chain information system for traders, governments, and investors seeking more sustainable production and consumption of tropical commodities by 2020.
