Tackling sustainability challenges through
supply chain transparency
Javier Godar, SEI
(1) Cause for concern: the Anthropocene,
a rapidly changing planet
That is ever more connected by global trade ...
With rising global consumption of internationally traded
commodities driving widespread impacts
Gaveau et al 2014
PLOS One
.... The case of tropical forests illustrates both the
extent of change:
and the pace of change:
Gaveau et al 2014
PLOS One
(2) Cause for hope: Unprecedented
commitments to more sustainable
supply chains
 37 countries
 53 multinational
companies
 20 provincial
governments
 16 Indigenous
peoples
 63 NGOs
.... driven by a boom in cross-sector
partnerships
.... exposing bottlenecks in decision making and real
opportunities for leveraging change at scale ....
WWF (2012) Better production for a living planet
www.supply-change.org
Coupled with increasing accountability
More than a third of the
world’s invested capital,
request corporate
accountability through
CDP
(3) Cause for change:
Are current capabilities sufficient to
deliver the supply chain transparency
that is needed?
The knowledge gap: Connecting actors
to places to impacts
Assessing
territorial
performance
Assessing
actor
performance
But still very limited overlap

systems
Balancing detail and scale to assess the
sustainability of commodity supply chains
(Godar et al. 2016)
 TRASE is a free-access online information and decision
support transparency platform.
 Trase enables governments, companies, investors and
others to better understand and address the environmental
and social impacts of their supply chains.
1. Mapping forest-risk commodity supply chains: blanket
transparency for all exports from a country of interest.
2. Linking downstream actors to sustainability challenges and
opportunities in production landscapes
3. Monitoring progress and strengthening accountability of
actors and places
Trase
By 2020 Trase is the go-to supply chain information
system for traders, governments and investors
seeking to transition towards more sustainable
production, trade and consumption for the world´s
major tropical forest-risk agricultural commodities
Vision
 SEI-PCS approach, which uses:
 Per shipment customs data, bills of lading and/or shipping
manisfests
 Tax ID records and when available contracts
 Domestic logistics data
 High resolution production data
 Self-declarations
 Data from inspections and sanitary registries
 Etc… (opportunistic approach)
 PostgreSQL database (open source, data integrity, postGIS)

Trase quick demo
Relevant learnings
 Large/big data for sustainability is in its infancy. If something
has not been done yet it is (likely) because no one tried before.
 There is data, it is often publicly accessible, but you need to
think out of the box when looking for it.
 Think ahead: prepare the data to be linkable with data you
imagine will be available soon….it will soon be available.
 Do the same with your database and your back-end. Think
ahead.
 The more data you have the more new data becomes relevant,
and the more data you find. But data formats and unique
identifiers become increasingly more important, essential.
Ongoing developments
1. Understanding investments and financial networks
2. Complex indicators alongside the supply chains
3. New large and big data sources to improve supply chain
mapping
Investments and financial
networks
 Graph database (neo4j), semantics, AI & Linked Data to acquire,
visualize, and analyze the role of investments in driving
sustainability outcomes. Neural Alpha.
 Focus on equity, sovereign and other fund holdings, lending,
legal structure, corporate news and event data (mergers,
acquisitions, joint ventures)
 Support to/from geojournalism networks. Close engagement
with the financial sector, dashboards on the making.

supply chain

Editor's Notes

  • #4: ADD NOTES: Magnitude: human-altered processes are of comparable magnitude to natural processes in many aspects of the global biosphere; Multi-faceted: human influence has multiple dimensions and this influence is occurring at scales ranging from local to global; Pervasive: the degree of human influence is such that shifts in ecosystem function and the emergence of increasingly altered ecosystems are likely to be occurring in even the most remote and protected regions. The transformative present: there has been a pronounced surge in human influence and the pace of change since the mid 20th century, which is continuing and expanding in the 21st century; Regional and planetary boundaries: the magnitude and spatial scale of change may reach tipping points, regional or planetary boundaries, which will result in major shifts in Earth system functioning when passed;
  • #5: Many ways we can show extent of impact .... But this is quite striking ... And leads into the next Few, if any, areas of the tropics that have not been touched by human influence, a theme I shall refer back to repeatedly in my talk
  • #6: Many ways we can show extent of impact .... But this is quite striking ... And leads into the next Few, if any, areas of the tropics that have not been touched by human influence, a theme I shall refer back to repeatedly in my talk
  • #14: Limited overlap making it hard to systematically assess perfromance towards zero deforestation commitments Mill positions, Concessions mapping, or bespoke company data offers some overlap between actors and places But missing out not only reliable data for many of the actors at the top end of the supply chain, but huge gap further down the supply chain. Makes it hard to systematically assess risk for e.g. finance sector looking at a broad portfolio
  • #15: BALANCE - not a replacemement Footprint indices: at a nation to nation scale, not granular enough Bespoke traceability systems, or supply chain audits – very detailed but not scalable
