Leadership Essential:
Coaching and Mentoring
through GROW Coaching
The GROW Coaching Model
You take on many roles as a leader. One of your most important roles is coaching your
people to be their best. By effectively coaching your people, you’ll help them perform
better, make better decisions, and progress further in their careers.
Some leaders find coaching others to be a natural skill. Others struggle to be an
effective coach and have to develop this skill themselves. The GROW Model is an
excellent tool you can use to structure a coaching session.

1. Establish the Goal

GOAL

REALITY

Establish the desired end
behavior with the individual.

2. Examine the Reality
Have the individual describe
the current reality.

3. Explore the Options

OPTIONS

Explore what options the
individual has for reachiing
the goal.

4. Establish the Will

WILL

Establish what will keep
the individual motivated to
reach the goal.

• How will you know when
you’ve reached the goal?
• Is this a SMART goal?

• What is the starting point?
• What are the issues that
you currently face?
• How far away from the goal
are you?
• What else could you do?
• What are the advantages
and disadvantages of each
option?
• How can you keep yourself
motivated?
• What could stop you from
achieving your goal and
how will you overcome this?
