JOHN 3: 1-16
POSITIONOF NICODEMUS: Verses 1
WHO IS THIS MAN?
WHAT IS His Background?
What is His Identity?
His Ancestral Background
His Social Background
His Educational Background
His Professional Background
His Religious Background
His Political Background
His Financial Background
HIS MENTION IN THE GOSPEL: Nicodemus is mentioned
by John al in three times in John’s Gospel;
- John 3: 1-15, 7:50-51, 10:38-39
HE WAS A RELIGIOUS MAN
1. He was a Hellenistic Jew (Jew born in
Non-Jewish Country) and a Pharisee.
2. Nicodemus Meaning: (Gk: Nikos +
Demos): Conqueror of or victor over
the people
HE WAS A RULER
1. He was a member of the Sanhedrin/Supreme Court Judge -
the highest legal, legislative, and judicial body of the Jews.
2. He was a highly respected & prominent teacher/professor
of the Old Testament Scriptures (John 3:10).
3. He was at the top of his field - He was the most renowned
Bible teacher of his day—the “Billy Graham” of first-
century Jerusalem.
HE WAS AN INQUIRER
1. He came to inquire of Christ personally.
HE WAS AN EARNEST MAN.
He had been occupied with his official duties
during the day, and now he treads the lone dark
streets uncertain whether Christ would receive
him.
HE WAS AN INTELLIGENT MAN
1. Education does not always enlarge the mind. Religious education sometimes
tends to be bigotry.
2. But this man was an independent thinker and claimed the right of private
judgment. His large mental capacity had been cultured to appreciate the
evidence and to weigh words.
3. Consequently, Christ reveals to him more advanced truths.
HE WAS A MAN OF RELIGION NOT
RELATIONAL
1. Yet, despite all his learning, achievements, and privileges, he did not
know God. He knew about God, but he did not know Him. (No
personal Relationship).
2. Religion failed to relate to and restore God.
3. Therefore no religion not enough to reach God, that’s why God
Himself came to reach, relate and restore the relationship with
mankind.
POOR UNDERSTANDING OF
NICODEMUS – Verses 9 - 12
He came with interest
He was the only one of his order who came
at all during our Lord's life, and said to him -
John 3:2
1) He recognized Jesus as “Rabbi”
2) He recognized Jesus as a teacher came
from above
3) He recognized Jesus alone can perform
signs, the ultimate ones
4) He recognized the presence & power of
God is with Jesus
CONSEQUENCES OF SIN
1. Separation from God (God-Man) — Spiritually- Gen 3:8
2. Separation from himself (Man himself) - Mentally- Gen 3:10
3. Separation of Man from Man (Man-Man) — Socially
4. Separation from Mature (Man-Nature) - Ecologically
DOUBTS OF NICODEMUS:
Verse 4 & 9
Doubt 1: How can a man be born again when he
is old?
Doubt 2: Can he enter a second time in to his
mother’s womb and be born?
Doubt 3: how can these things be?
Doubt 4 (Hidden) : What are the Requirements
to enter the Kingdom of God?
1. Nicodemus is thinking literally,
but Jesus is talking
metaphorically.
2. Nicodemus interprets Jesus’
words as having to do with
physical rather than spiritual
rebirth.
WHAT IS THE MEANING OF BORN AGAIN
The Greek word, anothen, carries a double meaning—”anew” and “from above: “born again”
“begotten again” “born from above” and “begotten from above.”
