This year about 9.4 million students will
appear, the Xinhua state news agency said,
roughly the same number since 2014 and
down from a peak of 10.5 million in 2010.
The fiercely competitive test is seen as a key
to social mobility and the best chance for
school leavers to land a white-collar job.

China's education ministry has urged
exam venues to "create an optimal
environment for students", and guard
against "extreme weather conditions,
natural disasters and disease
outbreaks that could occur during the
exams," Xinhua added.
The parents of Maotanchang Middle
School were doing their part to help.
Students cramming on the weekend
received tins of steaming soup their
parents had queued patiently to
deliver.

But the exception is
Maotanchang Middle School,

Islamic State built prison cells inside
an ordinary villa in Mosul as part of
the group's tactic of boosting the
safety of its jails and security centers
by concealing them among regular
houses.
Despite their outward appearance,
the jails had the regular attributes of
state-run detention centers where
inmates have their documents and
belongings taken away when they
arrive, to be given back to them if
and when they are released.

A camera hanging in one cell
where men were kept was linked
to the guards' office. "This is to
keep the prisoners subdued," said
the Iraqi military intelligence
officer showing the villa to
journalists.

hours a day underwater, drifting
and waiting for the right moment
to press the shutter. He shoots
during the day and night using a
lighting system he developed to
highlight the vivid colors and
fantastic shapes of plankton as
small as 2 millimeters.
