Today, I am delighted to stand before you on this auspicious occasion of Sangkran's Day at CamTech University. As we gather to celebrate this culturally significant event on the 5th of April 2024, I would like to share some insights into the rich history and evolution of this festive occasion. The Sangkran’s Day or Khmer New Year’s Day is an ancient tradition deeply entrenched in the heart of Cambodian culture, tracing its origins back to the illustrious Khmer Empire, an era of grandeur and territorial expansion that flourished from the 9th to the 15th centuries. During this empire's reign, encompassing a vast territory that stretched across Southeast Asia, the celebration of Sangkran's Day was embraced with great pomp
- 3. and grandeur. Itwas an era characterized by monumental achievements in architecture, arts, economics, and governance, with the empire's capital, Angkor, standing as a testament to its glory. The Khmer civilization period, epitomized by the construction of magnificent temples like Angkor Wat and Bayon, witnessed the genesis of Sangkran's Day as a joyous occasion heralding the end of the harvest season and the commencement of a new year according to the traditional Cambodian calendar. As inscribed on the walls of the Phimeanakas Temple dating back to the year 910, the festival symbolized not only the cyclical nature of life but also the empire's core values of prosperity, unity, and reverence for ancestral traditions. Previously, our ancient Khmer ancestors celebrated Sangkran's Day in the first month of the lunar calendar (Migasera - December), and later, during the reign of the Khmer Empire (Nokor Thom), it was moved to the fifth month of the lunar calendar (Chet - when the sun moves obliquely from above our head), aligning with the solar calendar (13/14 April - when the sun goes straight above our head). This strategic alignment highlighted the empire's mastery of astronomy and its profound connection to celestial phenomena. Now, let us delve into the deeper significance of the Khmer New Year. This festival transcends mere cultural observance; it embodies profound philosophical principles deeply rooted in the Khmer psyche. It signifies the cyclical rhythm of life, symbolizing the transition from the old to the new, and underscoring the eternal themes of renewal and rebirth. In essence, Sangkran's Day encapsulates the Khmer people's enduring reverence for tradition, resilience in the face of adversity, and unwavering optimism for the future. The three-day celebration of Sangkran's Day unfolds with a tapestry of rituals and festivities, each imbued with symbolic meaning and cultural significance. Moha Sangkran, the first day, is dedicated to cleansing and purifying homes, representing the shedding of negative energies and the welcoming of auspicious beginnings. Vora Vanbot, the second day, is a solemn occasion for honoring ancestors and venerating spiritual connections, underscoring the Khmer people's deep-rooted respect for familial bonds and spiritual heritage. Lastly, Vora Leung Sak, the third day, erupts into a jubilant extravaganza of traditional games, dances, Khmer Martial Art show, and communal feasting, fostering a sense of camaraderie and joyous celebration among the populace. In conclusion, as we gather today to celebrate Sangkran's Day, let us honor the noble legacy of our Khmer ancestors and the empire they built. Let us reaffirm our commitment to preserving and perpetuating our rich cultural heritage, for it is the cornerstone of our identity as a civilized empire.
