LAW AS A CAREER IN INDIA
Presentation

Director
• Legal education teaches and trains law students to become law
professionals .They need to explore and decide their career choice.
A QUESTION ABOUT THE
APPROACH TO CAREER
OPTIONS
1. WHEN TO DECIDE
2. HOW TO DECIDE
FIRST APPROACH
• How can I decide what I would like to do ?
• Don’t have an idea what all options are there ?
• I am the first generation law student !
• What are the applicable laws ?
• What are the earnings ?
• What will be the quality of life ?
• What would be nature of work ?
• Whether I will like it or not ?
•If you hold this view then no problem. Take
your time to ponder and decide.
SECOND APPROACH
• Decide your career choice by the end of first year
• In the next four years , plan your internships
• Increase your knowledge base
• Develop contacts
• Find out about super specializations and decide about LLM to do in what
subject ?
START EARLY
•While a theoretical base and fundamentals must
be strong, always strive to learn purpose of the
statute then being taught and its practical
application.
NEED FOR CAREER
COUNSELLING
Placements in most of the law colleges in India
are virtually non-existent. Reason is mainly lack
of skill knowledge on the part of students. Also
the absence of experts to guide them in this field.
•There is also an impression that it is not for
the law faculty to undertake this function. Let
the students themselves decide what they
want to do.
THE PROBLEM
•There are a large number of first generation law
students.
•They are not familiar with career options.
WHAT TO DO
AFTER LAW ?
Students are not aware about numerous
career options that are open to them after
law college.
