Leading
Remote Teams
A New Way to Lead
Leading remotely makes the complex role of leading
even more complex. It takes new skills to get better
results.
@Kevin Eikenberry
During this Pandemic,
Therefore, our objective of this session is to
• Aware, learn and improve our DMs about remotely working skill.
• Aware our DMs regarding the challenges and ways of working remotely in an
impactful manner.
• Know about the do`s & don`ts to establish a successful team.
Objective of the Course
We all have a chance to lead remotely We all are working from home
What is a Remotely
Working Team?
A team was working on a legal project in Madhya
Pradesh. There were 5 members in the team.
There were 3 field visitors, 1 project leader and 1
project manager. When this was done 50%, the
COVID-19 pandemic occurred suddenly. At that
time the necessary part of the project was started
and they had to complete it and go towards the
state leads.
Therefore, they continued it and were working
remotely. They used online platforms such as
Zoom & MS Teams App. Everyday they talked and
distributed tasks to each other, shown to project
leader and planned the next days.
In around 25 days, they completed all the
documents of research and solution for the same
and presented it to the heads of state.
In this way they completed the project,
experienced it and gave the example of a good
remote working team.
A remote team is a group of
professionals from various time
zones, diverse skills and different
culture working together on a unified
project. Each teammate working
from a separate location, living in
different cities, and working across
time and space.

What is a Team?
"Talent wins games, but teamwork and intelligence
win championships." – Michael Jordan
The main difference between leaders and
managers is that leaders have people follow
them while managers have people who work for
them.
Leadership is about getting people to understand
and believe in your vision and to work with you to
achieve your goals while managing is more
about administering and making sure the day-to-
day things are happening as they should.
Challenges for
Remotely Working
Great!! You completed 1st part
Maintain
discipline
Network
issue
Dealing
with
excuses
No face to
face
supervision
Social
isolation
Ways to overcome
those challenges
 Set ground rules- In the starting of each online meeting, we
can discuss and set some ground rules like if you have to share
something, please unmute, if you any problem please tell us, if
any network issue you have please turn off your camera and
use chat box, if you have any question/doubt/confusion please
let us know and clear etc.
 Set target for task- When we have a new discussion online, so
we can set our targets for that task, we may distribute those
sub-tasks with our all team-members as they can do well.
 Set timeline- In each meeting, we may decide a timeline to
meet next time and to complete our tasks/sub-tasks.
To maintain discipline-
 Avail good network operator/Wi-Fi- We all know well that the
network capacity differs from different areas, so please try to
avail the Wi-Fi/operator as per your area.
 Do one operation on the device at a time- When we are doing
more than one operation on the device, the bandwidth
distributes, so during online meeting please try to do only
operation.
To overcome network issues-
To feel face-to-face interaction-
 Try to turn on your Camera- If we have no network issue,
please try to turn on your Camera, if no the speaker feels that
he/she are talking to the Laptop.
 Pass smiley expression/acceptance to the speaker- Here is
two aspects if your Camera is turn on so please pass your
acceptance to the speaker and if turn off so meanwhile please
respond on the chat box or by unmute yourself.
 --
 -
Social isolation-
Dealing with excuses-
 Make sure the excuse is, in fact, phony- Many time the talk is
not an excuse, but we assume, so we need to understand
them.
 Understand where the excuse is coming from- When we have
an excuse or from anyone else, so we need to find the
root cause of that excuse to overcome.
Stages of Team
Formation
Great!! You completed 2nd part
Let`s Think
 According to you what can be the stages of team formation?
 At the time of team formation what are the things comes in
your mind?
Tuckman (1965) identified four
stages of team development
including Forming, Storming,
Norming, and Performing.
Eliminate confusion.
Communicate exactly what is needed.
Do not be a micro-manager.
Allow your team members to take risks.
Be protective and supportive of your team.
Appreciate your team.
Do`s
Recognize the value of each team member.
Learn how to maximize the skills of
your team members.
Don'ts
Recognize the value of each team member.
Eliminate confusion.
Communicate exactly what is needed.
Do not be a micro-manager.
Be protective and supportive of your team.
Learn how to maximize the skills of
your team members.
How
Leaders
can Team-
Players?
Let`s Catch Something
Let`s Think & Discuss
Mr. Verma is a DPC in Rajasthan. She is very concerned
about work online with the team in the COVID-19
pandemic. Identification and delivery of tasks, working
methods, technical guidance are major challenges for
them. The office workers are very supportive for him.
The support of staff members was very helpful to Mr.
Verma after the date.
 Did you think the team member`s support is helpful to do so?
 What are the key support the staff gave to Mr. Verma?
