- #6: This slide is a graphical representation of the second and third yellow blocks on slide 2 and depicts where data centers are today and where IT wants them migrate to. There are different types of applications, SANs, networking switches, hypervisors each with their own characteristics and management. Having multiple vendors in your data center translates into your staff spending more time maintaining infrastructure instead of spending time innovating. Significant amount of data center resources are spent to make sure these disparate pieces work smoothly. With flat or shrinking IT budgets it has become more and more difficult to “keep the lights on”. Costs for “keeping the lights on” include 70% lifecycle and or maintenance, 20% for software, including license and 10% for hardware. Not shown but also included are energy and people costs.
