MOTIONS OF THE EARTH
10.
Earth’s Movement
The Earthrotates on its axis as it revolves around the sun. These
movements affect our daily lives.
1. Rotation is the spinning motion of Earth on its axis in a west to
east direction or counterclockwise. The Earth makes one rotation
every 24 hours. This complete rotation is called a day. Earth’s
rotation is tilted 23.5 degrees relative to its revolution around the
sun.
11.
2. Revolution isthe movement of the Earth around the sun. The Earth’s
orbit is not a perfect circle, instead it is a flattened circle called an
ellipse. The Earth completes the journey around the sun once every
365 ¼ days. This is called a year. As the Earth revolves around the sun,
only one-half of it receives sunlight. Its axis is tilted away from the sun
for part of the year and toward the sun for another part of the year.
As the Earth revolves around the sun, the length and temperature of
the days change. This movement of the Earth causes changes in
seasons.
12.
