African Americans in the USA The Struggle for Civil Rights
Slavery Africans were stolen from their countries in Africa and sold into Slavery mainly in the Southern States of America.
Freedom in chains Slaves were freed in 1865. In the Northern states they made some progress into society, however in the south they were kept in a state of poverty and did not have their civil rights
Jim Crow Q - summarise how African Americans were denied their civil rights. Parks, washrooms, buses and schools were segregated in the south. That means whites had much better facilities than the African Americans Although African Americans were allowed to vote, Southern States made up laws to try and stop them from voting, I.e. they needed to be able to read and write. The activities of the Ku Klux Klan went unpunished, and many police officers took part in lynching blacks. A white man was never convicted on killing a black man in a southern court.
Fight the racist Nazis? Q - What is ironic about African Americans fighting for America against the Nazis? ‘I can fight for my country, but I am not allowed to carry a weapon. I also face being lynched when I return home for demanding my right to vote.’
Education = Power Q - In 1958 a black teacher called Clemson king applied to the University of Mississippi, what do you thing happened next? He was allowed in, but had to attend classes on his own He was committed to a mental asylum He was politely turned away He was refused entry and went on to attend a university in the North
Yes, it’s true He was committed to a mental asylum
