Jephthah was a mighty warrior from the tribe of Manasseh who was rejected by his family and cast out. When the Ammonites threatened Israel, the elders of Gilead asked Jephthah to lead their army. Jephthah negotiated with the Ammonites according to God's law but when they refused peace, Jephthah made a rash vow to God that he would sacrifice whatever came out of his house to greet him if God granted him victory.
