  Genre Let TheRight One In is a horror film that shares typical elements with that of the genre. It is however a little different to many horror films, there is a romance plot. The evil creature is not defeated and even helps the protagonist. It is atypical of the genre, but it is still a horror and has many more similarities.

  Editing The filmstarts with a completely blank screen except the opening credits. Then snow appears falling on the right side of the screen. This is a clear juxtaposition between the light and dark edited together for effect. Cuts are spaced further between at the start as the story has yet to begin. However, the camera toggles between the boy and the new arrivals showing their importance and their similarities/differences. This continuity editing means that the audience can develop an empathy for the character. When the director is trying to build tension faster cuts are used, then when the first murder takes place there are fewer cuts again to show the grotesque actions of the murderer.

  Target Audience Thetarget audience of a film is very important for a film so that the organization can better target it’s adverts or tailor the film to it’s audience needs. The target audience for this film would be wider than an ordinary horror. It’s Swedish, so is appealing to a totally different segment than the traditional western audience. This film will appear less to those who wants to be revolted or surprised as the horror is more subtle. The romance in the story may also be an attmpt to braoden the appeal.

  Sound The Soundplays a large part in the atmosphere of a horror movie, creating tension and suspense which build up the horror effect on thee viewer. The Clip starts and there is absolutely no sound, this creates a sense of unease with the viewer. The first sound is of the protagonist “Squeal like a pig.” This is very unnerving, quiet voice/strong command. Music starts when man & child arrive showing it’s a significant event. High pitched note when boy reveals knife, showing it’s danger. After the man murders his victim there is a high pitched strings and a low pitched bass that accompany his extraction of the blood. They help emphasize the unusual and horrible nature of his deed.

  Mis-en-Scene The Mis-en-Sceneis very important as it encompasses a wide variety of subjects. It helps to set the realism of the film The dark lighting in Horror films enhances the atmosphere of fear. The low-key lighting in this film denotes the uncertainty and evil. The white snow is a direct contrast to the dark. Reflection of the boy in the window, he appears pale, brings out a knife. The Blood on the side of the barrel looks thick and disgusting to revolt the viewer.

  Representation Often inHorror representation is very important to inform the viewer of the role each character will perform in the film. The Bullied Child is small and appears weak, he reads a lot of books. He doesn’t stand up for himself when he is abused. The young girl needs a man to look after her, showing the typical view that females are weak. The man appears to be the dominant lead in the relationship with the young female, she follows him and he is the one who does the work. This shows the typicality that older people will have more authority

  Camera The camerais one of the most important aspects in any film. This is no different in the horror genre. Low angle of the new resident’s window shows power. Long shot as the man kills his victim has many effects: shows us how remote they are, prevents us from seeing the exact details of the murder, prevents us from seeing the killers face. Camera crabs around the murder site. Composition of the Shot where he slices the victim’s neck is very important as we are not shown murder. Close up of the barrel to show the blood. Effect has more impact.

  Narrative The scriptis important in horror so that the viewer knows what is happening in the film at the moment, it’s also useful to let the viewer understand why the abnormal events are occurring. We can see evidence of Toderov’s narrative theory. The film starts at an Equilibrium. The scene is set and the characters personalities are built up, then there is a disruption of the murder in the forest. The Script in this film is more important than script is in other horror films. As the story is the main component as opposed to the creation of fear. One of the important issues in this film is the boy’s desire to hit back at his bullies. We see his anger at the bullies and his deire for dominance over them, ‘squeal’.
