The fellowship also dictates that my research focus at UAB has to be translational in nature. Furthermore, I have a $1,000 stipend to use for traveling to a conference for the purpose of presenting my research. Graduate Research University of Alabama-Birmingham (UAB): Lab Rotations Investigator: Dr. Farah Lubin June-July 2012 Undertook a project involving the state of DNA methylation at various genes of interest relating to memory and learning (i.e. BDNF and Zif268). Specifically, took samples of isolated DNA from rat entorhinal cortex and hippocampus and subjected the samples to bisulfite sequence analysis. Investigator: Dr. Lynn Dobrunz August-October 2012 Looked at the effects of haloperidol on fEPSPs in acute slices of mouse hippocampus. Specifically, I compared the effect of haloperidol in WT control mice to the effect seen in mice that were deficient in PGC-1α, a model of schizophrenia. Investigator: Dr. Kevin Roth

  Levi Miller 2 November 2012-February2013 Examined the role of EGFR in the promotion of cell survival in cell cultures derived from human glioblastoma multiforme. Specifically, the effects of treatment with tamoxifen were examined in relation to how much cell death was induced in the cell cultures upon drug administration. *Note: At the end of each rotation, I had to present posters describing the research I had done during my time in the lab. Investigator: Dr. Michelle Gray March 2013-March 2014 Project focused on evaluating a possible role for the Rho-GEF Kalirin-7 (a master regulator of dendritic spine dynamics) in Huntington’s disease (HD) pathogenesis. The BACHD mouse model of HD was utilized to pursue this goal. My research made used of Golgi-staining of medium spiny neurons to examine linear spine densities as well as molecular techniques to show expression levels of the Kalirin-7 protein. Investigator: Dr. Yogesh Dwivedi May 2014-October 2014 Responsible for ordering lab supplies and setting up a mouse colony for a new lab at UAB. This included writing up a breeding scheme that had to be approved by an IRB at UAB in order to be added to an established Animal Protocol Number. Also, in charge of ordering mice and rats for the lab through use of the Bioware animal ordering system. Finally, was involved in testing and utilizing several machines for behavioral assessment of the mice including a Forced Swim Test, Elevated Plus Maze, and Tail Suspension Test.
