What is this managed learning environment all about? Paul Seiler
Presentation objective To provide you an outline on what the schools, the Ministry and have started in the MLE domain so that You can join in and join up no matter where you are at (personally, school-wise) and Together really make this thing work better for learning
What is an MLE? “ Software tools and digital content that support learning” Comprised of many different modules, such as an SMS, LMS, eportfolio tool, blog, repositories for digital learning objects and many more Check out the MLE Reference Group to learn more Or view the component parts

Objective of the MLE activity To design and promote an educationally relevant open modular standards-based sustainable approach to the development and use of MLE for (NZ) schools
Key work strands – what do you want me to major on? Attendance management ENROL Integration Online systems / LMS / Parent Portals E-portfolios Reusable and portable content Identity and access management (or single sign-on) Assessment (including National Standards) * * Will not cover today 
Attendance management How many of you are using electronic attendance registers ? How many of you have signed up for the 12 months fee-free early notification ?
Integration and interoperability The challenge is getting all the parts joined up Does your schools use their SMS to: Do eReturns? Get/Check NSN? Update ENROL? What can we do to make this work better or for more of you?
Online systems / LMS / parent portals Uptake subsidies now available many schools Working with eTAP (eTAP), Edtech (Ultranet) and Dataview (KnowledgeNET and Moodle) Rapid over-subscription of primary quota but secondary okay Intention is to assist 200-300 schools per year Check out the SMS – LMS Group to learn more Advantages of using an LMS (esp. slides 31 & 32) But how do you choose?
Online systems / LMS / parent portals cont. Does your strategic direction include technology? Does your technology needs include a LMS? Document your needs and your wants Review options and what others around you are doing The value in sharing an LMS with another/other schools Remember the people aspect of change management, including leadership buy-in and shared ownership And yes, you can obtain many/all the benefits without an LMS (by using other tools) – the decision is your
E-portfolios And we have been busy and have much on the go Guidelines for and by schools (Ian has started) Case studies together with JISC (Startied) Mahara or MyPortfolio Investment in usability (Started) Scoping integration with LMS (Started) Taster sessions ( Taking requests now ) Finding other partners/backers within the Ministry (Ongoing) My conviction is that this is probably the most important part of our current work (therefore have started my own school and portfolio )
Reusable and portable content The LMS usually has some type of editor that enables the user to layout text without any knowledge of HTML, add graphics and make links But it is difficult to share content between school, take it with you or use it in an application other than in which it was created Our focus is to break the dependency between the content and the LMS
Reusable and portable content or Open education resources Example of: Content authored locally can be automatically converted to wiki format on upload in odt or (soon) from MS Word to a wiki-friendly format Content authored in WikiEducator is now available in different run-time environments , as a book and as an editable document And still working to improve the Describing content using education metadata and/or tagging Discovery of content by searching DigitalNZ from an LMS Location and performance of rich media for embedding
Identity and Access Management How many credential sets do you have for your professional/work activity? What value would you place on having fewer, that grant access to most key services/sites/applications, and worked from school and from home? Hope is on the way Can put you in touch with people using it List of SAML services And more good stuff is coming with the User Directory Interface and Identity Data Extract
Musings Pre-conditions for successful implementation of (e, b or d) -learning tools and benefits of school-wide use Importance of community E-portfolios: Contribute to what tools should be integrated and how we together build capacity LMS: Do you really need one? I am reading blogs and groups on learning analytics So what are you going to do next? And while I am here what questions (or messages) do you have for me?
