Maud church of Christ
By Jim Bradshaw
Sunday Morning, Oct. 5,
Where would the World be
without Electricity?
Darkness is simply the
absence of Light
What the world needs
now is – Jesus the True
Light
I Am the Light of the World
Joh 8:12 ESV Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, "I am the light of the
world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the
light of life."
Joh 1:1-5 ESV In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with
God, and the Word was God. (2) He was in the beginning with God.
(3) All things were made through him, and without him was not any
thing made that was made. (4) In him was life, and the life was the
light of men. (5) The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has
not overcome it.
Joh 12:46-50 ESV I have come into the world as light, so that whoever
believes in me may not remain in darkness. (47) If anyone hears my
words and does not keep them, I do not judge him; for I did not come to
judge the world but to save the world. (48) The one who rejects me and
does not receive my words has a judge; the word that I have spoken will
judge him on the last day. (49) For I have not spoken on my own
authority, but the Father who sent me has himself given me a
commandment--what to say and what to speak. (50) And I know that his
commandment is eternal life. What I say, therefore, I say as the Father
has told me."
I Am the Light of the World
Joh 8:13-18 ESV So the Pharisees said to him, "You are bearing
witness about yourself; your testimony is not true." (14) Jesus
answered, "Even if I do bear witness about myself, my testimony is
true, for I know where I came from and where I am going, but you do
not know where I come from or where I am going. (15) You judge
according to the flesh; I judge no one. (16) Yet even if I do judge, my
judgment is true, for it is not I alone who judge, but I and the Father
who sent me. (17) In your Law it is written that the testimony of two
people is true. (18) I am the one who bears witness about myself, and
the Father who sent me bears witness about me."
I Am the Light of the World
Mat 16:15-17 ESV He said to them, "But who do you say that I am?"
(16) Simon Peter replied, "You are the Christ, the Son of the living
God." (17) And Jesus answered him, "Blessed are you, Simon Bar-
Jonah! For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father
who is in heaven.
Joh 1:32-34 ESV And John bore witness: "I saw the Spirit descend
from heaven like a dove, and it remained on him. (33) I myself did not
know him, but he who sent me to baptize with water said to me, 'He on
whom you see the Spirit descend and remain, this is he who baptizes
with the Holy Spirit.' (34) And I have seen and have borne witness
that this is the Son of God."
Mat 17:5 ESV He was still speaking when, behold, a bright cloud
overshadowed them, and a voice from the cloud said, "This is my
beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to him."
I Am the Light of the World
Joh 8:19 ESV They said to him therefore, "Where is your Father?"
Jesus answered, "You know neither me nor my Father. If you knew me,
you would know my Father also."
Act 4:11-12 ESV This Jesus is the stone that was rejected by you, the
builders, which has become the cornerstone. (12) And there is
salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given
among men by which we must be saved."
Joh 8:28-30 ESV So Jesus said to them, "When you have lifted up the
Son of Man, then you will know that I am he, and that I do nothing on
my own authority, but speak just as the Father taught me. (29) And he
who sent me is with me. He has not left me alone, for I always do the
things that are pleasing to him." (30) As he was saying these things,
many believed in him.
The Truth Can Set you Free!
Joh 8:31-32 ESV So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed in him,
"If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, (32) and you
will know the truth, and the truth will set you free."
1. Disciples abide in the word.
2. Disciples will know the TRUTH.
Joh 17:17-19 ESV Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth. (18)
As you sent me into the world, so I have sent them into the world. (19)
And for their sake I consecrate myself, that they also may be sanctified
in truth
The Truth Can Set you Free!
1. Disciples abide in the word.
2. Disciples will know the TRUTH.
3. Disciples enjoy Freedom from Sin; Rom. 3:23; Rom. 6:23
Joh 8:33-36 ESV They answered him, "We are offspring of Abraham
and have never been enslaved to anyone. How is it that you say, 'You
will become free'?" (34) Jesus answered them, "Truly, truly, I say to
you, everyone who commits sin is a slave to sin. (35) The slave does
not remain in the house forever; the son remains forever. (36) So if the
Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.
Rom 6:16 ESV Do you not know that if you present yourselves to
anyone as obedient slaves, you are slaves of the one whom you obey,
either of sin, which leads to death, or of obedience, which leads to
righteousness?
Joh 8:42-47 ESV Jesus said to them, "If God were your Father,
you would love me, for I came from God and I am here. I came
not of my own accord, but he sent me. (43) Why do you not
understand what I say? It is because you cannot bear to hear my
word. (44) You are of your father the devil, and your will is to do
your father's desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, and
has nothing to do with the truth, because there is no truth in him.
When he lies, he speaks out of his own character, for he is a liar
and the father of lies. (45) But because I tell the truth, you do not
believe me. (46) Which one of you convicts me of sin? If I tell
the truth, why do you not believe me?
Can You Hear Me?
Joh 8:47 ESV Whoever is of God hears
the words of God. The reason why you do
not hear them is that you are not of God."
Rom 10:14-17 ESV How then will they call on him in
whom they have not believed? And how are they to
believe in him of whom they have never heard? And
how are they to hear without someone preaching? (15)
And how are they to preach unless they are sent? As it is
written, "How beautiful are the feet of those who preach
the good news!" (16) But they have not all obeyed the
gospel. For Isaiah says, "Lord, who has believed what
he has heard from us?" (17) So faith comes from
hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.
1. All religions are equal.
2. Obedience not required to please God.
3. You do not have to follow the words of Christ to be a Disciple
Joh 8:48-52 ESV The Jews answered him, "Are we not right in
saying that you are a Samaritan and have a demon?" (49) Jesus
answered, "I do not have a demon, but I honor my Father, and
you dishonor me. (50) Yet I do not seek my own glory; there is
One who seeks it, and he is the judge. (51) Truly, truly, I say to
you, if anyone keeps my word, he will never see death." (52)
The Jews said to him, "Now we know that you have a demon!
Abraham died, as did the prophets, yet you say, 'If anyone keeps
my word, he will never taste death.'
