About the project
TEASPILS
The TEASPILS project focuses on creating environmental awareness towards plants and greenery,
educating young people and their teachers towards ecological learning spaces. Actions will promote
and foster awareness of environmental issues in an educational context, e.g. the sustainable
development goals (SDGs) of the UN Agenda 2030.

About the project
Approach
Technology-enhanced approach
based on a IoT system using
sensors and visualisations, to
promote learning about plants and
their effects in classrooms, plant care
and responsibility towards them
Goal
Stimulate knowledge and
appreciation of plants close to the
people concerned, i.e. in urban
indoor and outdoor environments;
especially, the effects of plants in
classrooms
Target
students from primary, secondary
and tertiary level
+
educators: primary and secondary
school teachers, educational leaders,
lecturers and support staff
About the project
Outcomes
● Community of collaborators, educators and students
involved in the project
● Learning activities, workshops and projects to
share with the community
● Fully-integrated IoT system based on a spike (sensors)
and a dashboard for data visualization
● Digital Green Competences framework for
theoretical contributions and practical applications

Why so much development?
IoT system: How does it work?
● Values displayed are represented in the
led bar.
● Refresh time is setted to 10 seconds as a
default value. The user is able to configure
this value using the Telegram Bot.
IoT system: Telegram Bot
● Simple commands.
● Change settings.
● Get single read of any
of the sensors.
IoT system: dashboard
Collecting and displaying meaningful
information is fundamental to create
useful learning activities. TEASPILS
Dashboard allows teachers to
● Get data from internet Endpoints
● Load customized datasets
● Visualize data in a timeline
● Details of specific measures
IoT system: dashboard
Timeline visualization:
● Load datasets from
internet or hard drive
● Visualization of temporal
progression of the data
● Adaptable graph (Selected
measure, scale,
navigation)
● Compare two specific
variables.
● Register general
observations
IoT system: dashboard
Single measure screen:
● Visualize conditions for
optimal plant growth
● Configure “acceptable”
values
● Register snapshot
observations
IoT system: dashboard
Built-in administration site:
● Create new Plants
● Review saved data
● Configure Plant data
● Look information about
measures
Learning activities: Primary school
What environmental
data can we collect?
What can we observe
from the plant?
Hypothesis
(combinations)
Exploration of the spike prototipes and dashboard
Learning goal: Performing a data analysis to understand the best conditions for the plant
Session 1: Formulating hypothesis and collecting data
Creating the questions and hypothesis
Learning activities: Primary school
Session 2: Understanding the data and getting statistical insight
Observing the plant
Analysing and understanding the data
(interpreting the plot, max/min, watering days…)
Learning activities: Primary school
Session 3: Drawing conclusions and making inferences
?
True or False game
Identifying plants from their datasets
Reflection on plants
