 Sodium bicarbonate is white solid compound . It is
found crystalline & powder form.
 It is commercially known as “BAKING SODA”.
 Because it as main component of baking soda.
 It decomposes on heating.
IN TR OD UC TI ON
ON COMMERICAL SCALE,
IT IS PREPARED BY PASSING CARBON DI OXIDE
GAS ( 𝐶𝑂2) THROUGH THE SATURATED
SOLUTION OF SODA ASH ( 𝑁𝑎2 𝐶𝑂3 )
 SODIUM CARBONATE ( 𝑁𝑎2 𝐶𝑂3 )
 CARBON DI OXIDE ( 𝐶𝑂2 )
 WATER 𝐻2 𝑂
 THIS IS CHEMICAL COMPOUND.
 ITS COMMERICAL NAME IS WASHING SODA.
 MELTING POINT : 850℃
 ITS DOES NOT DECOMPOSE DUE TO
TEMPERATURE .
 THIS IS AVAILABLE IN MARKET AS LIGHT
SODA & DENSE SODA ASH ( 𝑁𝑎2 𝐶𝑂3. 10𝐻2 𝑂 )
 (CO2) is a chemical compound . It is a gas at room
temperature. It is made of one carbon and two oxygen
atoms.
 . People and animals release carbon dioxide when
they breath out.
 Also, every time something organic is burnt (or a fire
is made), it makes carbon dioxide.
 Plants use carbon dioxide to make food.
 is the solid state of CO2 gas below (-78.5 °C)
 Water is a simple Triatomic molecule.
 The consist of 2 item hydrogen & 1 item is oxygen.
 The amount of water on the earth 1.35 million 𝑘𝑚3
 97% of water consist of sea water.
 Sources of water is
• Surface water
• Underground water

In this section 𝑁𝑎2 𝐶𝑂3 is mixed with water to prepare
the saturation soda ash solution .
This saturated solution of soda ash is now transferred to
the next section of carbonation section
 In this section, there is long tower similarly to the
carbonating tower in soda ash perpartion.in this section
the saturated soda ash treated with the compressed
𝐶𝑂2 gas.
 Soda ash introduced from the top of carbonating tower
and 𝑐𝑜2 𝑔𝑎𝑠 from the bottom.
 Reaction takes place forming 𝑁𝑎𝐻𝐶𝑂3
 Temperature is controlled at 40℃.
 Here, Reaction is
𝑁𝑎2 𝐶𝑂3 + 2𝐻2 𝑂 + 𝐶𝑂2  2𝑁𝑎𝐻𝐶𝑂3 + 𝐻2 𝑂
 In This section 𝑁𝑎𝐻𝐶𝑂3 is separated from the 𝐻2 𝑂
With the help oh Rotary Drum Filter .
 The wet 𝑁𝑎𝐻𝐶𝑂3is now transferred the drying section
 In this section wet 𝑁𝑎𝐻𝐶𝑂3 is first passed through the
centrifuge to remove the lot of water and then dried in
dryer at 70℃ 𝑤𝑖𝑡ℎ ℎ𝑜𝑡 𝑎𝑖𝑟 to get dry 𝑁𝑎𝐻𝐶𝑂3
 It is 99.9% for drying continuous belt conveyor “OR”
tube dryer is used.
 Sodium bi carbonate is mainly used in the following
industries.
 Drugs & Medical
 Leather
 Food product
 Baking powder
 Etc.
