Originally founded in 1865 as a pulp and paper manufacturer in Finland, Nokia diversified in the 1960s and became a electronics and telecommunications company. It made many acquisitions in consumer electronics, networking, and mobile phone businesses throughout the 1980s and 1990s. Nokia came to dominate the mobile phone market in the late 1990s with the success of its 6100 series phones and grew to become the largest mobile phone manufacturer. However, its market share declined in the 2010s as smartphones rose to prominence.
