Horror movies conventions
techniques used:
• Settings – The use of dark or isolated locations to emphasize the vulnerability of characters
• Iconography – Icons typically used in horror movies include: blood, grave yards
• Synchronous sound -This is used to exaggerate the sound and create an atmosphere
• Narrative – Classic narrative structure i.e. representation of teenagers in the film.
• Themes – Good vs Evil, supernatural, death/murder, violence
• Camera work – Used to intensify the scene i.e. close ups, low angle shot, high angle shot
• Editing – Creates unsettling tension and suspicion e.g. Cutting rhythmes, Jump cuts
• Characterisation – Protagonist, antagonist i.e. women are often presented as vulnerable in films
•
My group have chosen horror genre as part of our project. I chose 3 types of
horror movie opening scenes to analyse, all 3 of the movies I chose follow a
classical horror movie convention
These are some of the classical horror movie conventions they follow:
•
• The use of dark/isolated settings.
•
• The use of synchronous sound to build up tension.
•
• The use of jump cut editing is to create a dramatic scene.

•
The Ghost Ship- Opening sequence
• Camera work - Wide shot to show the setting
• Setting – Dark (night time)
• Iconography – Visual style, Props
• Sound – Diegetic and non-diegetic sound
In what way have we challenged the forms and convention of a real media product ?
Similar iconography to that of The Ghost Ship was incorporated, such as the use of visual
style to create a dark atmosphere. Additionally, low-key lighting was used, which helped
us create dark shadows and unfamiliar shapes in the dark. The use of camera work, such as
wide shots, help the audience establish the setting. Also, an extreme close up of the
antagonist hands was included, which creates a sense of mystery.
The Ring- Opening scene
• Settings – Dark isolated house
• Characterisation – The presentation and use of female characters
• Editing – Jump cut editing
• Sound – The use of asynchronous sound to build tension

In what way have we challenged the forms and convention of a real media product ?
My group used teenage females as vulnerable victims, which is comparable to The Ring.
Furthermore, jump cut editing was used to create dramaticism, which is also used in the ring.
Moreover, we used asynchronous sound to build tension and to add realism.
Does my media product this forms
and convention ?
The setting of our film was in the park, during the night, which is a location
often used in a horror sequence. A classic horror convention is selecting
female characters as the victims (protagonist) and the male characters as the
villains (antagonist), which is why this was included in our media product. A
wide range of sound was integrated such as, ambient sound and diegetic
sounds. This was done to create mystery and tension, as well as adding
realism.
Furthermore, the use of camera work can be appreciated in our film, as we
have used shots like, extreme close ups to highlight the characters facial
expressions, which transmit fear, in order to add a dramatic effect.
Additionally, the narrative of our film has a good against evil scenoario.
