Q: Who would be the audience for your media
product, how did you attract and address your
audience?
When starting the project of creating a film opening scene
we did a lot of primary research into the target audience
of our film. We did a mixture of primary and secondary
research, For our primary research we did a questionnaire
about horror movies as a general iin this we asked the
age of candidates and whether they enjoyed horror
movies or not there seemed to be a lot of interest for
horror from ages 14-30. Ages older and younger still had
some interest but not as much as the age bracket showed
above.
 Secondary research involved looking at other peoples
research again the ages were very similar to the ages
we had got from primary research, so this was our
target age range. Also when looking at target audience
we thought about the socio demographic table as our
piece is a intellectual piece we decided it would be
aimed at B-C1 as these more educated people in the
middle class would be more appreciative as they tend
to be more cultured.
When looking at target audience we also took into
account media theory's, for example; Dyers utopian
theory this theory states people consume media to
escape reality. He believes they try to escape 3 major
things; social tension, inadequacy or absence. Katz and
Blumlers uses and gratifications theory says audience
members watch specific media types to satisfy specific
needs. In our case we needed to make it scary so
audience members will get the thrill they seek from horror
films.
 In our production we looked at attracting and
addressing the audience to our piece we did this by
using the Abraham Manstow’s hierarchy of needs
theory. This says audiences watch movies to feel
something they don’t normally feel in real life. We
applied this to our horror story opening by making it
scary so people can feel an adrenaline rush and be
scared at home while in the safety of their own home
this means audiences will be attracted to our
production.
