HOW DOES YOUR MEDIA PRODUCT
REPRESENT PARTICULAR SOCIAL GROUPS?
    E.G. SEX, RACE AND RELIGION…
My magazine was made for a target audience
of teenage girls between the ages of 16-21. I
used an image of a female model for the front
cover as I wanted the female audience to be
able to relate to the girl. I didn’t make the
model pose seductively or pose in little I have used a girl the
clothes, she is laughing and carefree to entice same age and sex as the
a female audience to be interested and want to target audience for my
read. The feminine colours also make the model to connect with
magazine very gender oriented to women them. As she has a girly
which is what I wanted. This is not the look she seems like a
stereotypical way a women would be stereotypical pop star.
represented in a media product, they usually
look very made up, glamorous and enticing for
men, the way a women ‘should be’ I have also
represented. On the front cover there’s a list of advertised the
artists who’s albums we are promoting which fashion pages on the
shows the audience that the magazine is about front cover as I
pop/chart music. The artists are people such know this is
as Justin Bieber, Adele and Rihanna who are something my
all appealing to a female, teenage audience target audience
who I aimed the magazine at. I have changed would be interested
the fonts on the front pages to interest the in.
reader a bit more and make the magazine look
more exciting. I have used informal language
as teenagers are less likely to read and be
interested if the writing is formal.
I didn't make the magazine appropriate for a certain type of race, I made it for all teenage
girls to enjoy by putting artists they would like to hear about in the magazine and making
fashion pages. I made the magazine for an audience of 16-21 year olds, I used girly colours,
pretty fonts and music and artists that girls would find more interesting than males. The
magazine has a pop/chart music base. I didn't give it a very expensive price so that families
of every class could afford it, we priced it at £3.99 a month. The lighting in the picture I used
for my front cover is bright so that the audience will know that the story is happy and
uplifting. There is no background to the image so that the whole focus is on the model, who
looks relaxed but confident, enjoying herself, she looks casual like a middle class, teenage
girl in everyday life. The shot is full length as she is kneeling and I wanted her whole body in
the picture. The model is wearing casual, everyday clothes because the article is casual and
she fits in with the lay out of the magazine as it is all laid back.
The denotations of this contents page are
that it is a list of features the magazine has
with two relevant images. The
connotations of the page are that when the
reader sees it’s a contents page they will I used a high
expect to see a well set out page of stories angled shot for
                                                 the
the magazine covers. There are also two representation
images on this page, they are both female of a nervous
models but they not stereotypical female girl as she
                                                 looks like
representations, models usually pose everyone is
showing off their bodies and looks but I above her and
made these images about the girls and she’s under
                                                 the spotlight,
their music. The second image is a close she is also
up of the model laughing to symbolise a biting her lip
happy, upbeat article. In the first image in the image
                                                 which makes
the model is holding a guitar and looking her look
away from the camera so that the anxious.
complete focus of the image isn’t on her,
the music has a main part in the image as
well.
The colours and fonts I used on the contents
page were to appeal to a feminine audience as
that’s what my target was. The language on the
contents page is again informal as there has to be
a lot of writing on it, the only way to get teenage
audiences to be interested and keep reading is to
talk about what they like in a way they
understand.
In the first image on my contents page we used a
nature background so the image looked fresh
and natural, the model is again wearing casual
clothing because the focus of the image is her
and her guitar. In the second image, it is a close
up image and the background is plain so nothing
distracts the audience from the model. She is
wearing outdoor clothing . These images will
appeal to teenage girls, middle class, who enjoys
pop or chart music, gossip, in college or later
years of school as they can relate to these girls
who are represented as middle class, casual,
relaxed, confident girls.
My DPS has all the usual codes of a music
magazine DPS as it has an image, a house
colour, the lead and a drop capital. The
bright colours and the model smiling in the
picture symbolise a happy article. The colours
and model also represent the genre of
pop/chart music. I have used one imaged
that takes over half the page as teenagers are
more likely to be interested in images rather
than the text. I have also used pull quotes to
break up the text. I have changed the font for
individual texts to keep the page exciting. The
pink and red colours will also appeal to the
younger audience which is what was
intended. For my DPS I used the house
colour of red and baby pink, colours like this
are traditional for a pop/chart music
magazine. I have used a lot of quotes from
the model in my text such as ‘it would change
mine and my mothers life’ which would also
be emotive and understandable to an
audience of the same age, gender and class as
the girl.
The model in the image is wearing
casual clothing. She is holding her
guitar to focus the image on her
music. The model is smiling and
happy which will appeal more to a
female audience as she is not
posing or pouting to get the
attraction of men, she is also
wearing clothes that represent her
in a non sexual way which is not
stereotypical of women as that is a
way to get a male audience The
shot is a mid-shot and the
movement of her hands draw the
audiences attention to the guitar.
