Term 1: Tuesday and Wednesday. •Plain black indoor shoes with your child’s name What does your child need?

  How you canhelp • Please ensure your child is organised for their day at school. Full school uniform should be worn at all times. • In order to maintain a positive partnership between parents and school, we would ask that you give your child the support that they need to complete school tasks in the allocated time and to the best of their ability. • When you are completely satisfied with the content and standard of your child’s work, please sign their homework • Please remind your children to share letters and correspondence from school regularly

  How you canhelp- supporting at home Reading • Ask questions to check understanding • Ask the child to summarise what they have just read in their own words • Make flash cards of any words the child is struggling to read and practise those daily • Use of reading videos

  Maths • Regular practiseof number bonds and looking for maths in real life contexts. Encourage use of Sumdog and Purple Mash- logins are in homework jotters.

  SpellingSpelling • Practise theirspelling words daily • Test them on the words • Make sure the child understands the meaning • Encourage the use of a dictionary and thesaurus • Make flash cards • Looking for the spelling pattern in other texts, out and about etc.

  Free time Friday •30 minutes of free time at the end of each week which links to our School Behaviour policy. • Warning given, 5 minutes loss of Free Time Friday, time out in class, time out in another class, senior management. • Record kept and children reflect on what they can do to improve their behaviour. Record sheet sent home for parents to sign.

  Homework Spelling – Spellinghomework is set on a Monday and should be handed in by Friday each week. Your child should copy out their spelling words 3 times in their homework jotter then pick a spelling task to complete from the spelling menu. Children are tested on spelling words on Friday.

  Homework Reading –– Readinghomework will be given on a Monday and Wednesday and should be completed by the Friday of that week. The children will have opportunities to read in class and explore their book through discussion and reading activities. Maths – Maths homework will be given on a Monday and should be handed in by the Friday each week. Other homework relating to IDL and other curricular areas may be given throughout the year where appropriate. If you have any questions or comments about your child’s homework please do not hesitate to write a note in their homework jotter or contact me directly to discuss.

  A Curriculum forExcellence At Mid Calder, we fully embrace Curriculum for Excellence. The purpose of Curriculum for Excellence is to enable each young person to become Successful Learners, Confident Individuals, Responsible Citizens and Effective Contributors. The experiences and outcomes of Curriculum for Excellence are achievable at five level. Primary 3 will be usually be working at first level- levels are in the pupil’s jotters.

  MATHEMATICS AND NUMERACY Term 1focus •Numeracy: a range of strategies to explore number including SEAL number strategies. •Mathematics: Data handling through our IDL context of Dinosaurs.

  LITERACY AND LANGUAGES Term1 focus •Writing: Letters, advertisement posters, fact files, imaginative story and character descriptions. •Grammar- adjectives and punctuation. •Reading- Skimming and scanning a text.

  Interdisciplinary learning Term 1focus: Dinosaurs •Science: Classification, habitats and food chains. •Maths- Data handling. •Drama- Taking on the role of an explorer, reseapalaeontologist and museum curator.
