This document summarizes past and current efforts to delineate and protect ecologically significant landscapes in the Portland metropolitan region. It describes early plans from 1903 and 1971 to establish interconnected systems of parks and natural areas. In the 1980s and 90s, grassroots organizations worked with Metro to map the region's natural areas and establish a Greenspaces Master Plan. Voters approved bonds in 1995 and 2006 to fund the acquisition and protection of thousands of additional acres. The region has also adopted regulations and programs to integrate habitat protection into growth management and planning efforts across multiple scales.
