Mis-en-scene: Our Music Video
Mis-en-scene is extremely vital when it comes to our research and planning, as
it is possibly one of the main aspects of media techniques used when both
filming and watching a music video as it makes up the visuals on the screen. It
is important to plan out mis-en-scene well in order to attract an eclectic
audience.
When using mise-en-scene in our music video, we will take into consideration
the lighting, costumes, props, colour, location, make-up etc.
As a group, we gave each other our own feedback of what we had
accumulated through our individual research and discussed it together in order
to decide what we will include in our final product.
- The colours that will be present in our music video will be very natural
and bright with a motley sense to it in order to highlight the fact that it’s
an Indie Folk music video. In addition, we think that it’s a great
opportunity to be filming during autumn, as the warm colours that are
present during this season are present in many Indie Folk music videos
and typical of that genre. By doing so, this will enable my audience to
communicate the genre of the song we have chosen as well as create a
natural and verdant atmosphere to portray simplicity.
- We have decided to portray the protagonist in our music video as a
dancer and gymnast through her costumes. The main character, who is a
teenage girl, will be dressed in her dance outfits as she is dancing.
Conversely, when she is not dancing, we will film her in normal clothing
in order to show the audience the differentiation between her everyday
life and when she is dancing. We have done this in order to depict how
the girl really feels when she is alone. By doing so, the narrative of the
music video carries a message to the audience, highlighting the theme of
‘appearance vs. Reality’.
- As a group, we have tested out different make-up looks that we can use
on our actors in order to create a realistic and believable narrative in our
music video. For example, when the girl is dancing and around all her
friends, her makeup will be very bright and colourful in order to depict
her ‘happiness’. On the other hand, when the young girl is alone, her
makeup will be dark and smudgy in order to portray the fact that in
reality she is unhappy.
- The locations that we will film in are very important as they will each
have a significant impact on the music video as a whole. The main
location that we will film in will be the theatre in our college. This will be
in the scenes that the girl is dancing and we will have an audience
watching and supporting her. In addition, we will also film in a small flat
that will be viewed as her house in the music video. The flat and the long
road next to the flat will both portray her loneliness, and a time to show
her real feelings to the audience when she is alone. The fourth location
that we will film in will be Oxford Street, which is a very busy road in
London. The reason we have chosen this busy road is to emphasise the
fact that although she may be surrounded by hundreds of people, she
still feels isolated and secluded. All four locations, with the use of
editing skills will contribute to the portrayal of the girls feelings, and
therefore this makes the music video more interesting, leading to a
more captivated and eclectic audience.
