Synchronous vs. Asynchronous
Synchronous
Students learn at the
same time
Asynchronous
Each student learns on
their own schedule
What are your thoughts regarding
synchronous vs. asynchronous learning?
What do you think would be better for
your teachers and learners?
Encouraging engagement during a synchronous lesson
Run a Kahoot quiz to
check for
understanding
Ask students to use a
simple emoji in the
chat window to
demonstrate their
comfort
Direct students to a
quick Forms poll to
gauge their
understanding
Pause at designated
times to ask questions,
have students share
thoughts, or respond
to chat window
prompt
Student’s age =
minutes of
uninterrupted
instruction in
one sitting
Record the lessons in the four-
minute segments so students
can watch them separately and
take a break at the end of one
before watching the next one
Record one video, upload it to
Stream, and use Forms to insert
questions into the video that will
allow students to pause and reflect
on what they are learning before
they move on and watch more.
Use the Chat function to create
smaller discussion groups
Include pauses for student
reflection, questions, and insights
Plan on no longer than 15
minutes of focused attention
during direct instruction
Ask small groups of students to
work a problem, discuss learnings
and share out questions

Recording lessons
Two ways to record lessons:
Record pre-recorded lessons for
students to watch (asynchronous)
Record Teams calls as they
occur (synchronous)
Options for recording asynchronous lessons
1. Use a Teams Call
2. Use the Camera app on your
computer or your phone
3. Use PowerPoint Recorder
4. Use Screen Recorder in PowerPoint
5. Use Screen Recorder in Stream
6. Use Screen Recorder in Flipgrid

Connecting with your students
Throughout the day and week, students can chat with
their classmates and you in the Posts tab in Teams
Flipgrid allows you and your students to record and easily share
short videos, continuing the connection in asynchronously own.
A daily topic can help with tracking attendance
If you plan to record lessons for later student viewing, you can
schedule virtual office hours where students can join a call to
check in, ask questions, share insights/ideas
You and your students can meet synchronously to discuss
content, share experiences from the day, and discuss how
everyone is adapting to the transition to remote learning
Maintaining
your
connection
with students
is critical
Maintain Schoolwide Routines
