MultiplicationBy Katie McColly
Key TermsMultiplier: the number or numbers being multipliedProduct: the answerMultiplication Signs: x * ∙Example: 2 x 3 = 62 and 3 are bothmultipliers and 6 is the product
What is Multiplication?Multiplication is nothing but a shortcut for addition! An equation that tells us how many times to add a number with itself
Example #1What is 5 x 2 ?This equation is telling us to add 5with itselftwo times5 + 5 = 10So 5 x 2 = 10
5 x 2 is the same problem as 2 x 5We would now be adding 2 with itself 5 times!
2 + 2+ 2+ 2+ 2= 10
So 5 x 2 = 10
Multiplying by 1Any number multiplied by one is the same numberWhy???That number is only being added once so it stays the same
For Example3 x 1= ?We are adding 3 only 1 time
So.....
3+Nothing Else= 3
Meaning that 3 x 1 = 3This works with any number!LIKE…200 x 1 = 200Because 200 + nothing else = 200Or 1,000,000 x 1 = 1,000,000
This works in reverse too1 x 3 for example1+1+1=3So 1 x 3 = 3
The Zero RuleAny number multiplied by zero will equal zeroWHY???You aren’t multiplying the number by anything
Examples7 x 0 = 00 x 4 = 0 1 x 0 = 0255 x 0 = 0 Any number x 0 = 0
