TASK 1 Idea Generation and
Research

RESEARCH & IDEA
GENERATION
Select a song/track that you like [or don’t like!]
Generate three ideas for music videos employing styles,
techniques and conventions that we have looked at in
previous sessions. Explore how you could interpret the
song differently using different methods
You can add any extra info you think is relevant, images,
mind maps, etc
For quick mind maps you could use bubbl.us to generate
these

RESEARCH
Watch a selection of videos to get your ideas started,
make note of a minimum of 5 – add extra slides,
screenshot the video and in bullet point note down info
in terms of camera, editing, art design, performance, etc
and how this might link to your production

CLOSE UP SHOT
Starting the music video using a close up of rapper ‘lil
waynes’ face instantly grabs the attention of he target
audience as it displays his facial tattoos. This is instantly
appealing to his audience as it is not usual and reveals
his personality. Showing this close up of his face also
gives of an eerie atmosphere with the music which is
playing in the background. Having his eyes closed gives
conitations that the music video is going to be dark and
less vibrant.
Using shots like this in my production will allow me to
show my target audience up and close subjects of my
video, making them ask questions which will find them
engaged.

LOW ANGLE SHOT
Using a low angle shot like in the example above is
useful in making the performer seem a higher status to
the audience as it is taken from a lower height.
This can be effective in my video because it can engage
an audience by its amusing.

TEXT ON SCREEN
Putting large text as shown in the example is effective as it
makes the audience read what is displayed on screen. A key
part of making this engaging at the start or throughout the
video is that the bright colour of yellow will straight away
catch the audiences eyes, ina ddition the blue ‘who dat boy’
introduces the song name which will make the target
audience ask questions on what it means also making them
want to watch on more.
Using large text in my video would be useful for these
reasons and can mostly be really effective for emphasising
words

BIRDS EYE VIEW
Using a birds eye view in a music video is not only good
for showing the landscape of a place and how tall/large
it is but as shown in the example it creates an effect
where the people in the video have less dominace. IT
also will give my target audience the whole perspective
and view over place filmed
This could be useful in my video to show areas which are
large however the restriction is getting to the correct
height to make it work

EXTREMELY LONG-SHOT
Using an extremely long shot in a music video is very
effective for showing the scale of how big something or
an area is. It can very much reflect the landscape of
somewhere as shown in the example

Through the music video I want to show the story
between a male and a female but most importantly the
effects it has on a male's emotions and how they react
mentally. Within the music video it will include various
scenes and images signifying different emotions the
characters are feeling.

production and apply these to your planned production
considering which equipment you would need and
resources, etc

The song 'B' by jaden smith is part of a series of songs 'l' 'u' 'e' in
jadens album 'syre'. Letters of the song spelling out 'blue' has
significant meaning as the word blue in his album connotates
to state of sadness, melancholy and loneliness which jaden
presents with a theme of heartache and despondancy in this track.
This is relevent because that is exactly what the meaning of the track
I am choosing is about. My interpretation of the track is as though
the narrator is describing a male and female in a relationship where
in the end the female is to leave the male and the pace and beat of
the song express the males emotions and feelings. At the beginning
of the song the pace is slow and has the sound of a music box which
has connotation of a child which makes you think of pureness and
innocence however, this contrasts from the middle of the song where
the pace is fast and the beat and rythum becomes more hectic giving
connotations of anger and chaos. In order to capture exactly what I
want I will need to use lighting to convey this ides e.g start of the
song in daylight and middle of the song at night. Filming at night
however may be difficult so I will need to hire good lights to use so
that my audience can see clearly. I will also need a tripod to hold my
phone or camera steady so that the image s clear enough for my
audience to see.

What are the limitations and risks, eg distance, access,
cost, weather? How will you manage this?

Editing my music video will take place I college using adobe premiere pro on a apple desktop. I
will also need to rent the studio in college for some medium shots

team members strengths/weaknesses? When are they
available?
CAST: Do you need any external performers? When are
they available? Cost implications? Will you have to feed
them? Transport them?
Other personnel? Is anyone else helping you?

My crew and cast will be available the week starting 5/10/20.
They live in york so there will be no issue for travel.

PRE-PRODUCTION:
VISUAL PLANNING
This section is concerned with the visual planning of your
music video
You should use this section to develop the sequencing or
your video, establish the relationship between the visuals
and the track itself and create a structure for you to
follow when filming
It is important that you ‘pre-visualise’ the video before
you make it; it will make filming and production a more
streamlined process

The first half of the video will include a light and daytime atmosphere.
This is to give happy conotations however the second half of the video
will include house colours of black (representing darkness) and dark blue
(representing) sadness. This will be shown through the use of filters,
dark visual effects and lighting.

RIP-O-MATIC
You should also construct a 15-20second Rip-o-matic
test reel using existing footage to convey the type of
video you want to make

STRUCTURAL
BREAKDOWN
Breakdown your track into it basic sections [e.g. intro,
verse, chorus, verse, etc] and apply broad visual ideas to
each section
You can use this as the master template for your
production, then add more shots to each section when
you develop your full visual plan
You should create a slide showing all the sections of the
song, then add a slide for each section with timings,
lyrics, what happens and details on specific shots
You could storyboard and shot list each section as you
go, to break up the process.

SHOT LIST
Your shot list should contain the sequential breakdown
of what you need to shoot for your video
It should work in partnership with your storyboard
It will be your working document when you film
It should contain the shot number, scene number, shot
description, framing and action you will see
It should also have information on performers in the
scene and other props, etc
Shot list template is on Blackboard in the pre-production
folder.
