Music Video One
MKTO- God Only Knows
The official music video for this song was released along with the song itself on the
29th November 2013.
The narrative is basic and easy to understand, yet still humorous and relevant to the
song and the band themselves;
Malcolm Kelley and Tony Oller play a game called 'God Only Knows’, They get too carried
away and become obsessed with it. Malcolm hides the game in the fridge to hide it from
Tony. During the video, Tony is getting bored on his date and skips out to play the game
and Malcolm tricks his boss with a cardboard box replica of himself to play the game.
Later at the recording studio, Malcolm leaves early to run back to their apartment for the
game, but Tony takes a taxi back. As they wrestle for the game, it falls out of the flat
window to the car park and Tony and Malcolm race down to the car park, but before they
could pick it up, a car runs it over. Since the game was now ruined, they decide not to play
anymore games, but a mailman comes up to them with a package, presumably the sequel
or a replacement and struggle for it.
Music Video Overview
Style/ Genre
This bands style is definitely pop, through their clothing, age and attitude this is easy to
indicate.
The song also reflects this as the music is up-beat and catchy. Alongside these obvious
features the music video its self gives hints to the intentions and message that MKTO
want to portray to the audience.
Target Audience
Their biggest viewing audience are teenage girls, due to the ‘American Boy Band’
fascination in this generation this was easy to see.
I believe their target audience are teenagers between the ages of 14-18, they have a
range of songs but are all based on a similar story line or theme. Being youthful, rebelling
and being in love.
Meaning
The meaning to this video is based on friendship, gaming and being able to do what you
like. Gaming is a clear feature to relate back to a ‘teenage boy’ stereotype, as Malcolm has
a job but rebels against it and leaves, this shows a free lifestyle or fun and not being held
down which might be what they are trying to advertise, which relates back to their style
and genre of being youthful.
