•Match cuts
CONVENTIONS YOU
PLAN TO USE
The genre of this song is alternative/indie and the
conventions of this include lip syncing and multiple close
ups and medium close ups on the character
In my video I will aim to …
•Lip syncing
•Medium close ups
•Close ups
•Set on the streets – low budget ( convention of the genre)
MIND MAP OF IDEAS
[SUMMARY OF IDEAS]
SUMMARY
5 opportunities of your ideas
•Includes different angles and shots
•A lot of advanced editing techniques which will give me
the chance to practice them and perfect them
•My idea is flexible so if something doesn't work then I
will be able to adjust the idea so that it will work
•Gives me the practice of working with the camera and
trying out different shots and angles and find which ones
work best
•The particular song is a good choice for the use of
rhythmic editing, which will be a good learning
opportunity to edit to the music
SUMMARY
5 restrictions to your ideas
•Includes difficult camera angles and if they aren’t
executed right then it won’t look good
•Getting the right person for the role of the character – so
they’re easy to work with
•May find editing difficult as I am wanting to use more
advanced techniques for example, having certain things
in colour and other things in black and white
•Lip syncing – getting the character saying the words on
the right time and making it look as natural as possible
•Finding the right location to film
FINAL IDEA –
ARTIST/TITLE/INFO
Joy by Bastille
‘Joy’ by Bastille fits into the alternative/indie genre and was released in
2019. Bastille are an English band that originated in London however it
started out as a solo project for Dan Smith, before turning into a band
with Chris Wood, William Farquarson and Kyle Simmons. The name
comes from Bastille day which is celebrated on Smith’s birthday.
Artists similar to Bastille are Imagine Dragons, Two Door Cinema Club
and Walk the moon as they are all alternative/indie. This genre started
out as being quite low budget, and normally included a narrative that
the audience can relate to. The music videos from these genres tend to
include close up on the singers to help advertise them and introduce
them. The cuts are normally done faster or slower to fit with the beat of
the video, the videos also have an old/worn out filter over them so it
looks a little older however as the genre has progressed since the early
2000s the music videos tend to be moving further away from the
stereotypical view on them. However many videos still support this
outlook for example Bastille’s Pompeii video that was released in 2013,
supports this as it shows the singer lip syncing to the lyrics and
multiple medium close ups and close ups on the artist
FINAL IDEA – TRACK
SUMMARY
The band have commented on the meaning of the song stating “Joy is that
moment at the end, that moment of redemption, where you wake up on the
kitchen floor and all the anxieties come flooding in… and a phone call or a
message from somebody... That can just bring you back... The smallest little
things that can just pull you back when you feel like you’re on the brink” The
song is written frm the perspective of someone entering an emotional
darkness and a simple phone call from somebody who cares brings them out
of it.
The song resembles the state of mind the character is in for example ‘waking
up on the kitchen floor’ reflects a state of vulnerability, and the lyric ‘feel my
pulse quickening’ implies he is anxious. Another line is ‘take a walk through
the wreckage’ so here he is talking about his state of mind however there are
light hearted moments when he says he pictures the caller roll their eyes over
the phone. He refers to himself as a ‘walking disaster’ and the caller is
dragging him away from self pity.
The song length is 3:12 and the music video length is 3:21, the beginning of
the song starts of at a steady pace, then the pre-chorus and the chorus get
quicker which relate to the lyrics of ‘pulse quickening’. Then towards the end
the bridge is the slowest part of the song.
FINAL IDEA – YOUR IDEA
My idea is to have a character wake up on the floor and not
really know where they are, which results in them feeling
anxious and the camera zooms in to the character’s face/eye to
show we are going in their brain, where we see the character all
in black clothing to show his state of mind where they then see
the person call them which gives them the energy to get up and
leave, and we see them walking down the street where it is
dark and cloudy but very isolated to reflect their state of mind.
And as the song progresses we see the character’s state of
mind improve and this is shown by the world around him
getting lighter, busier etc. I can show this by using a fade
in/out in the background. Then at the bridge where it slows
down I would have it rewind back to the beginning where he is
lying on the floor again and zoom out from a black screen up
to a birds eye view with the character dressed in a red hoodie
and jeans which is what they were wearing at the beginning. By
doing this I would hope that the video looked like we were
inside the character’s head for the whole video where we see
how they really feel then by the end of it, where it ends how it
began with a birds eye view where we see the character get up
TASK 2 Pre-production
Assessment
TITLE OF
PRODUCTION/PRODUCTI
ON OUTLINE
My music video is to the song ‘Joy’ by Bastille, and the
idea for the video is inspired from many different music
videos that I have seen and I have taken ideas from all
the different videos and combined them into one,
however most of the ideas in my video I thought of and
just developed an idea from that.
My video will start off with a birds eye view on the
character lip syncing to the first verse, then zoom into
their face and have it cut to black then zoom out but
have it in black and white to represent their mind. Then
have it follow them out the door using a tracking shot,
and then cut to them walking forward down an isolated
street.
Most of the final video will start to look like my idea in
editing because most of my idea includes many editing
techniques for example having certain things turn to
color at certain points in the song
LOCATIONS
I only need 2/3 locations, the first bing a kitchen floor
which is easily accessible and then a street which is also
easily accessible and then a forest. These locations are
all available to me because where I live surrounded by
forests and easy to get to and it won’t cost me anything.
A risk is that if it turns out to be terrible weather the
walk to forest becomes dangerous. The weather doesn't
matter if its cloudy or sunny as it will be in black and
white
EQUIPMENT
I will need one of the cameras college provide and also a
tripod. I can get this by booking the kit through
blackboard. However my video is very minimal and
doesn’t include a lot of equipment, additionally I will also
need a video SD card to store all my footage on
FACILITIES
I will edit my video in premier pro on a PC as it is easily
accessible through college and I know how to use it to a
good standard.
PERSONNEL
CREW: I only need 2 to 3 people, one person to star in it
then me to do the camerawork and maybe a third person
to help out with the sound and also star in the video at
the very end if needed
CAST: The video only needs one person in it, and they
live near me so it is easy to transport them to where I live
PROPS/COSTUME/ETC
There is only one person in the video, who will be
wearing blue jeans and a jumper it is a very simple
costume to reflect the character who describes
themselves as a ‘walking wreckage’. Additionally the
color doesn’t matter too much due to the video being in
black and white apart from a few parts in the video.
I’m not needing any props in my video to emphasize the
minimalistic style of the video.
TASK 3.1 Visual Planning
STRUCTURAL
BREAKDOWN
Thought I'd never be waking on the kitchen floor
But here I lie, not the first time
Now my morning has broken, and it brings the fear
My mind's falling, falling
Then I feel my pulse quickening
But regrets can't change anything
Yeah, I feel my pulse quickening
When your name lights up the screen
Oh Joy, when you call me
I was giving up, oh, I was giving in
Joy, set my mind free
I was giving up, oh, I was giving in
How'd you always know when I'm down?
How'd you always know when I'm down?
Birds eye view with
the character lip
syncing along to the
song
Slowly zooming into the
characters eye – if possible
insert a clip of an eye
Now it starts to be in black and white
representing the character’s state of mind, have
the phone screen light up, then the character
getting up and going to the door
Take a walk through the wreckage, clearing out my head
I hear your eyes roll right down the phone
I'm your walking disaster, keep on dragging me
From self-pity, poor me
Tracking shot,
accompanied by a
medium close up of
the character, walking
down an isolated
street to show they
feel alone
Then I feel my pulse quickening
But I wouldn't change a thing
Oh Joy, when you call me
I was giving up, oh, I was giving in
Joy, set my mind free
I was giving up, oh, I was giving in
How'd you always know when I'm down?
How'd you always know when I'm down?
Have the character
almost get hit by a
car to show walking
disaster, but gets
dragged back by
something which we
don’t see
Have the place
become a little
busier – not so
alone, still a
tracking shot
of the
character
As the night dissolves into this final frame
You're a sweet relief, you saved me from my brain
From my brain, from my brain, from my brain
Oh, oh, oh, oh
The character
stops walking
and the place in
the background
becomes blurry
and busy
Have it cut to
black then zooms
out to slowly
reveal an eye,
which is now in
colour as were
coming out of the
characters mind
Oh Joy, when you called me
I was giving up, oh, I was giving in
Joy, set my mind free
I was giving up, oh, I was giving in
How'd you always know when I'm down?
How'd you always know when I'm down?
I feel joy when you call me
I feel joy when you call me (I-I-I feel joy)
I feel joy when you call me
I feel joy when you call me
How'd you always know when I'm down?
How'd you always know when I'm down?
Have the phone screen
light up, then the
character excitedly gets
up
Have the character
talking on the phone
and use a tracking shot
of them talking and the
streets are busy
STORYBOARDING
