Advanced Portfolio Music Video 
Preproduction Checklist 
Task 
The following of these tasks need to be completed and uploaded to your blog 
by the end of October.

A list of conventions for music videos, and a list of the generic conventions for the genre you are 
working in 
Categories of music videos (three categories) with examples of each of these, 
and what genre they tend to fall into 
Analysis of similar media products- at least three music videos analysed in detail, with links to the 
YouTube video embedded in your blog 
Goodwin’s analysis of music videos and Laura Mulvey’s analysis of Music Videos - how this is going 
to apply to your work 
Intertextuality in Music videos – what this is, examples, and what YOUR influences are and how 
you might use these influences in YOUR video. 
Research into the music industry- how are videos made? Who are the main companies which show 
videos? Where can you find music videos? What are the purpose of music videos (think about the 
business side of music videos)? 
· Detailed description of target audience- this includes age, gender, occupation (social grouping) 
and interests in other media- what films, TV shows, other music do they like (media grouping), 
you also need to include audience theory- Uses and Gratifications, Dyer’s Utopian Solutions, 
Maslow’s hierarchy of needs etc… 
Questionnaire for audience finding out what videos they like, why they watch watch music videos 
and why they like the ones which they have identified. You can Also tell them about your ideas 
and get some feedback on these. Comment on what you found out from your questionnaires and 
how you will use this information.
Filmed focus group of this discussion – comment on what you found from this and how you will 
use this info

ONGOING 
PRODUCTION BLOG ENTRIES –detailing the creative decisions you make on a day to day 
basis about filming, editing, photoshop etc... Explain how production and editing is going 
etc.. 
Note – from the example blogs we have seen we agreed it would be good practice to blog 
whenever you have had a breakthrough idea or encountered and overcome an issue or 
when you have achieved something you are proud of. 
Remember, don’t just blog something for the sake of it. Images, videos and ideas 
boards/collages are all acceptable as long as they come with some justification. Images 
without any explanation are not going to add to your grade and therefore are a waste of 
your time. Also inspiration can come from anywhere – you may have seen a 
filming/editing technique in a film but want to use it in your video. Even if it’s not in the 
same medium you can still blog it. Remember many music videos use intertextuality to 
great effect.
