Beyoncé – If I Were a Boy Music Video
This music video in particular deals with gender roles/stereotypes of men and women. In
the video, the woman is a cop which typically breaks gender roles since most men are cops, but it
isn’t till the end of the video when it is explained how this will show the reinforcement of
stereotypes. The video progresses and shows her arresting someone and her partner checking her
out as she bends over to search the suspect.
After the husband or boyfriend is sitting at home calling the girl who is out with all her
friends at bar. The friends being all men and are her co-workers as well. The woman sees her
phone ringing and pulls it out to see it be her significant other and hits the ignore button. The
couple is then invited to a party for her work and they both attend. During the party the man is
standing in the corner and has to watch the woman grind on her partner from the force. After the
song ends she walks over and tries to talk to him and he walks away.
Once the two are home they start having an argument over what had happened. The man
says, “I can’t believe you did that. Do you know how that makes me look?” Then the woman
replies, “What? Why are you jealous? It’s not like I’m sleeping with him or anything.” Then they
both at the same time ask “What?” This is where the roles flip back to the more normal
expectation of this situation. The man just says, “What? Why are you jealous? It’s not like I’m
sleeping with her or anything.”
That is how the whole video reinforces the stereotypical man and woman behaviors in a
relationship. It is typically men who ignore the women and flirt while the girls get mad while the
men just get defensive and play it off like its nothing. The lyrics follow the video pretty well and
also talk about how Beyoncé would act if she were a boy for a day.
The gender roles are presented further with the home and work life of the couple. As she
gets ready for work the morning he cooks breakfast and gets ready. After she leaves for work he
goes to his desk job as a secretary for some fashion company. So the roles are made very evident
even though the genders going through them are the opposite of what is expected.
