The Use of Wikis for Book Reviews in the Middle School Erlyn Fukushima July 2010 Touro University California
Overview of Today’s Presentation Importance Purpose of Study Literature Review Key Themes Implications Gaps Importance and justification for your study
Importance With the popularity of technology in our society, teachers need to prepare their students with the necessary skills to be successful in the work place. Using web 2.0 sites, like Wikis, allows students to hone the skills they will need for their future careers and should be incorporated into elementary and middle school classes. By incorporating technology lessons into the classroom (in addition to the fundamental literacies taught in school) we are preparing them for today’s careers that require these digital literacy skills.
Purpose of Study To outline what skills are necessary for success in today’s work place and how by effectively using technology in the class room, these skills can be practiced. Define Digital Natives/Millenials - the new generation and how they differ from previous generations. To define Digital and Media Literacy, and how these skills should be incorporated into teachers’ curriculum. To show how technology is being taught in our classes, it’s effectiveness, as well as any downfalls it’s downfalls. Objectives or Outcomes
Literature Review Theme 1 SCANS report - What Skills Do Students Need to Succeed The New Generation: Digital Natives/Millenials (They want it NOW!)
Literacy + Digital Literacy + Media Literacy = Skills needed for Today’s Jobs Literature Review Theme 2
Literature Review Theme 3 Wiki use in the classroom - Pros and Cons
Implications for the Study So many studies on using Web 2.0 sites have been done at the college or graduate level, and not many are found being used in the middle or elementary levels. This study will inform others on the need to start using some of these Web 2.0 sites early in our schools. Our Digital Natives are getting younger and we need to address these skills early in their education.
Gaps in the Literature Not many studies found using Wikis at the elementary or middle school level. Length of time for projects? Issues with copyright? Ethics? Accessability of technology/programs?
