GENRE - THRILLER

Thriller movies are still mostly blood and gore however, they have the power
to make you think about the movie and the mystery of who the killer is rather
than a typical horror film. A known man that is killing random people for the
                                    thrill of it.

A few things that point out a thriller movie are things such as:
                               • Eerie music
                              • A clever killer
                                  •Murder
                                 •Fast cuts
                          •Dark shadowy lighting
SCREAM 4

THE MAIN SHOTS IN THE OPENING
    SEQUENCE OF SCREAM 4
SHOT 1

The first shot that we see in the
opening sequence is a close up of the
phone ringing and a young innocent girl
picking it up. This is a typical iconic
item in the scream movies and it
automatically builds up tension as you
know that the person on the other line
is going to be ghostface. Even thought
you expect it, it still makes you jump as
the screechy music starts which we have
also learnt from thrillers that something
           bad is going to happen.
SHOT 2

     A common thing in thriller/horror
movies are the innocent victims that
are often pretty teenage, or young
adult girls that are always conveniently
home alone. In screams case they are
all about to or have just watched a
scary movie which makes them more
vulnerable as they would be more
paranoid as they think it is just there
mind playing tricks on them because
of the film they have just seen. This
mid shot shows the girls talking
normally showing they have no idea
            what is going to happen.
SHOT 3

Once the tension of the movie has
started to build up and the victims
stupidly look around to check that
everything is ok. Eerie music begins
to play which automatically tells the
audience that something bad is going
to happen. A over the shoulder shot
       showing a scared facial expression
          whilst having a conversation.

A example of the eerie music is…

SHOT 4-5

Once the tension has built and the
music has made the usual screechy
sound it ends up that there was
nothing to be scared of until the music
happens again and again until finally
          something bad happens to the
                  innocent girls.
A mid shot of the girls jumping, this
happens very quickly as a doorbell
rings and the music drops. This all
               adds to the tension.
A long shot shows one of the girls
looking outside to see who was at the
door, as expected nobody is there
which adds to the tension again.
SHOT 6-7

The murders are a classic scream
style with ghostface doing the killing.
        The audience are expecting this
however they still jump which shows
the successes of the effects of the
      camera angles, sound, lighting, mise
en scene and editing. By doing all of
these things well it makes this
      opening sequence very successful at
making the audience jump and get
             drawn into the movie.
Mid shots of the the girls being
stabbed, this is also the first sign of
                   ghostface.
SHOT 8

What is clever about this opening
sequence is that it grabs the audience’s
attention within the first minute and we
already get attached to the victims and
we don’t want to see them get
murdered. However we then see that it
was a movie itself we become more
A movie inside a movie relaxed until the next killing which we
are not expecting at all. This then also
turns out to be a movie which another
two girls are watching and we become
hooked to find out who will be in the
                                        main story line.
SHOT 9

Then we start again with the movie
being inside a movie. However this
time the storyline has changed. The
two innocent young girls are still
home alone, however this time it is
the girl with her hair curly that kills
               rather than ghostface.
A mid shot of the girls sat on the
sofa, both of them looking relaxed
and calm. The close up of the second
blond girl stabbing her friend. This
is more effective than the last killing
as it is completely out of the blue
                 and not expected.
HOW WE CAN USES THESE
                            TECHNIQUES

In our thriller opening sequence we can use the ideas from scream such as the
build up of tension and the successful use of camera
angles, sound, lighting, mise en scene and editing to make our piece scary.
Also the idea of not knowing who the killer is, is very interesting as it makes
us on the side of the victim.
