Kia Ora, Talofa and Welcome to week five term 2.
Many thanks to the 95% of families who attended Student/Parent/Teacher conferences. These
“formal” conferences are so important in ensuring you are keeping in touch with what is happen-
ing at school for your child’s learning. Please remember, that these are not the only time that you
can make contact with your child’s teacher - they are only a phone call away for an appointment
or that quick two minutes catch up after school or a note in the communication book will get a
response. Sometimes, catching up on an ongoing basis is good for you and your child.
There were some questions in general:
Homework: why are there no worksheets. Research shows that homework in the form of
worksheets provides no added value to outcomes for student learning if they have no relevance
to what is happening in the classroom. Therefore, our emphasis has always been, and will con-
tinue to be, on reading, basic facts practice and spelling practice, with the occasional project set:
ie an oral language or specific related project where students will be asked to present their find-
ings.
Responsibility for belongings: As responsibility is part of the school’s values - all teach-
ers encourage students to take responsibility for their belongings - since we no longer have a lost
property box, it is amazing how little lost property we have - to date this term - None:):)
Nevertheless, as teachers we do pass on the responsibility of ensuring that students have their
own reader/reading book in their bag, their own communication book which has homework of
basic facts and spelling glued in - to the students. If you find your child is not bringing home any
reading or basic facts or spelling - then write a note to the classroom teacher or ask them after
school - there may be a simple explanation or it could be that your child is not taking responsibil-
ity and need that quiet reminder.
Attendance: during conferences, attendance reports were handed out to families whose at-
tendance or continued lateness is of a major concern. These will be monitored very closely over
the next few weeks for a change in habits with all students being on time. If the habits are not
viewed to be changed, then as a school we are legally obliged to pass this information onto the
Attendance Service for them to follow up and visit your home. The Ministry is getting quite strict
about lateness, especially in Primary Schools - they want bad habits addressed.
Choir: That time of year again, we have 24 students wanting to be part of “Sing Out” - this is
fantastic and they have agreed to attend practices in their lunch hour as well as school time. A
note has gone home today with all the practice dates. We can’t wait to start hearing the songs
being sung around the school.
Kapa Haka: Is up and running again this term and we are in preparation for our Polyfest per-
formance in Term 3. Practices will be every Thursday at lunchtime from 12.45pm to 1.15pm.
Any parent support would be much appreciated. Please come and see Joy Maheno in Room
Mataura if you are able to help. Thank you.
SCHOOL TALENT SHOW: This is going to be held next Thursday, 12 June at the Tisbury
Hall at 10:30am. Each class will be entering three items, with judges deciding who will go
through to the big talent night on the 27th of June. All parents are very welcome to attend the
school talent show. Please rug up warm as the hall has no heating.
SCHOOL UNIFORM: Thank you for your responses. The results are being collated by the
Board’s uniform sub committee who will advise the outcome in the next newsletter.
Please take care over the next few weeks of the term (can you believe it only four weeks left
until the holidays.)

Practicing basic facts - it does not only have to be
the practice sheet sent home. You can have flash
cards, sing along to a times table CD, play games
where you have to add or subtract or multiply.
Here are a couple of great sites for basic fact prac-
tice:
- slide maths app - for four players on the ipad.
- ictgames.com and click into the numeracy button.
Having fun with learning is so cool.
